I always have a running plan in place. Every time I have a day off coming up (I work 6-10 days in a row), I always talk about my plans for that day (real or fabricated). If someone still has the GALL to call me that day for coverage, I can politely remind them of my 'plans' that I had been talking about...that is IF they decide to call already knowing I am 'busy'.

Do what everyone else has said. Ignore them. Don't txt or call back. It is not your responsibility to cover for them.
Same thing goes for when they want you to come in early. Unless you need the hours go for it. They will ALWAYS try to guilt you into it but just stand firm. They can't write you up or fire you for not covering someone's shift or not coming in early.
They have already "guilted" the new partner at my store to come in early twice in a row. Obviously he wasn't going to say no. So I had to warn him on the perils of "just saying yes" to management.

You are not obligated to cover anyone's shift at any time. So just dont answer the phone. Say that you have plans or are busy, they don't need to know details. Just about everyone here has the same problems, would cover for others but know nobody would cover for them. We're all pretty much over it.

Soooo, I really hate covering for people because I know for a fact that none of them would cover for me with the exception of one, who is infatuated with me. I've gotten to the point where I don't answer the phone when somebody from the store calls, but I feel like that's probably a bad idea and will end up getting me in trouble for whatever reason (or maybe it won't and I'm just overthinking it).

Anyway, what excuses do you use? I have started using the same excuses every time and I feel like they're going to catch on and call me out on it. Not that it would really matter that much, I'd just rather not go down that road. :P

I think it's more about the verbal delivery than the drink's actual handoff.

Whenever a customer asks for whipped cream, I stare blankly at the cup, then up at their face, then back at the cup, and just go, "Oh... OKAY! :)" Then I proceed to scoop the foam off/dump some out into the espresso bar's tray, top it off with whipped cream, and hand it off with a "Sorry about that. Thank you! Have a good morning/afternoon/etc!"

Guy ordered a kids hot chocolate.

I asked if he wanted whip, and he said nonono, kid was allergic to dairy.

I thought 'why didn't you say so when you ordered the drink?' and asked if he wanted the KHC with soy.

He says nonono, kid's allergic to soy.

So I'm like, how do you expect me to make a hot chocolate? (phrased more nicely) and he gets very irritated.

(Here's where it gets weird(er).)

He is *positive* that at Starbucks, the regular HC is made with mocha syrup, but the KIDS HC has *always* been a powder mixed with water.

Part of his detailed reminiscence/argument involved the idea that the powdered mix was why the KHC was cheaper.

Does anyone out there remember anything like this? We served a powdered Godiva cocoa for a while, but its recipe definitely used steamed milk. Also, it was more expensive than regular HC.

(As an aside, every hot chocolate mix I looked up had powdered/dry milk or creamer listed as an ingredient.)

If it had foam, I scoop some off. If it was all liquid, I pour a little out. There is no way I'm remaking the entire drink just to put whipped cream on top.

On a related note, if they tell me it was supposed to be no whip, I scoop the whip off, maybe pour a little more milk into the cup. I'm not about to make a whole new drink for that either. (I always ask about whip on soy bevs. I don't believe anyone who tells me they're allergic to whipped cream but not milk.)

Happened to me too! This woman's thermos had some beige liquid in the bottom, I figured it was left over from her previous beverage. After I had already rinsed out the cup, she freaked out about how that was her special french vanilla creamer that she brought from home. I offered her some vanilla syrup and breve, but she kept moaning about how "special" her creamer was and how much she'd been looking forward to enjoying it in her coffee. WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME ALL THIS WHEN YOU HANDED ME YOUR THERMOS?!

So. It seems like managers like to preach about standards, but think that their way is better. Nice.

The only standard is to double cup short cups that are water based, and put a sleeve on water-based hot drinks. Everything else is supposed to be at the hand-off plane so you can spend more time making beverages...? Wait, isn't that in the Starbucks Portal? o_o;... I find it hard to believe that it was the company's intent to connect with customers over splash sticks and straws.

Document this process in writing. Just the no-show, the reasons, and how it was handled - all the process that led to you being fired. Name names, identify the store, etc. Make them include it in your employee file. DO NOT BE RUDE- just give the facts.

But #3 - ???? WHY would anyone want to go back into that situation??

Maybe SB's should have a quarterly "boxer day" not announced to the public, where all management levels work at a store for a full shift, but without any identification as to their actual job. Green aprons and all, and let them see what it is really like. I bet many of them haven't been on the line in a long time.

Now, if that happens, the fantasy would involve all the employees going to a store where they are not known and... well, you know the rest.
