Minimum wage in San Francisco is $10.55 an hour and San Jose is $10 an hour. San Fran is highly expensive to live in. I was considering moving there for a while, but I just don't think I could afford it just working at Starbucks. If you can find a way to afford it, more power to you. Would be sweet to live there! Good luck! =)

san francisco is an extremely expensive place to live if you're talking about living in the actual city. your best bet would be to live in like fremont/san jose as suggested. much cheaper and you're only about ~20 min from the city if that

I'm not from SF, but I'm from the area, and it's nice, but it gets very cold there. If you're coming from the South, then there might be an adjustment period. If you're planning on working downtown, have fun finding parking, it's very difficult and you might need a permit, but that's not in all cases. I think most stores in SF are Cafe only, but I could be wrong, so that's a plus. You should also try looking in cities around the Bay Area, Alameda, Oakland, San José, etc. Most of the South Bay is connected by BART so if you want to be near SF but not in it, that's a plus.

All in all SF is very nice, just uber busy streets and probably busier Starbucks.

I'm currently working in a mallbux in the south, we recently got a new manager who is stressing me out to no end. The main reason I haven't left yet is because my old manager (who got promoted) asked me to stay and suggested that I had a good chance of getting promoted. However, that doesn't seem like its happening, despite the fact that I bust my **** every day staying late if I'm asked coaching and training new partners (not a barista trainer), trying to do tips in under two hours (you try counting 250 dollars in change). Then my manager gets upset at me for not doing tips fast enough or for moving too fast on bar or on register. It just feels like I'm going nowhere. In the short term I'll be trying to transfer to a cafe store near me, but I'm getting tired of living in the South. I visited San Francisco a few months ago and I really liked the atmosphere there.

Any suggestions from partners who have lived/worked in that area?

I agree with Senor. I'm a SS at my store & always appreciate when someone forewarns me that a task might take them longer than usual for whatever reason. Notification of any kind is always better. It covers your @ss!

I completely know how you feel though. I feel like I am "that" girl a lot because I also have a really strong work ethic, which is surprisingly hard to come by. The team I work with has gotten a lot better with the work ethic, but there is still 1 partner in particular that I work with every day who does not give two f**ks about his work ethic or what anyone has to say about it. I've tried to coach him several times on the simplest things, like actually shaking our SHAKEN Tazo Iced Teas for instance when he makes them for customers. I always get my head bitten off so now I just leave the other SS or my ASM to deal with his bullsh1ttery. They have to deal with his frequent disappearances, 20 minute 10's, & 10-minute trash runs. The only reason he likes to be on bar when the morning rush is over is so that he doesn't have to do any real work, like cleaning or any duty roster tasks. And then he just **** up customer's orders, even after the customers themselves call him out on it. It is pretty ridiculous & thinking about how he makes the rest of our team look to even one customer makes my skin crawl.

Holy crap did I just say all of that! LOL /endrant

is this /everyone/ at your store?
because if you keep up your hard work, anyone who isn't a stupid **** notices.

this sounds really stupid but whenever i go above & beyond & someone says like, "ok we have to do the bathrooms" & i can say "i already did them" & then they say "oh wow great" it makes me happy. yeah ok i'm everybody's ****, etc etc.
but they remember you doing stuff like this, & it's not forgotten. maybe now it's a green apron card, but it could mean a better raise later. starbucks pay isn't the greatest pay, but you take what you can get.
so if you keep at it & go those extra miles, people notice. some of them might even appreciate it.

of course disregard all of this if you know 0% of the people at your store will notice/care.

I agree with the above, and also must emphasize - You are just a barista. You can stop caring. You do what you are told and customers are your first priority. If **** doesn't get done, it's not your **** on the line - it's your shift's/SM's, ultimately. Just be sure that you don't take too much time caring on any one task as Senor Cardgage said. Clearly articulate every step that you must take in order to perform that task if it requires multiple steps.

Also, here's no harm in asking, "Can you show me how you would like it done?" when someone is being unreasonable... ESPECIALLY when they do not realize how long that particular task takes to do the 'right way.'

On top of that, communication is key. Shift tells you to make whips but the sink is full and they're all filthy? It'll take a couple seconds, but before you begin tearing into that dishpile to pull out every canister and wash it, tell the shift who delegated the task to you 'I'll get the whips done but, to do that I gotta tear through this dishpile to clean them first.' Usually, that should diffuse any 'oh she's taking her time hiding in back hurhurhuhrur what a dong' nonsense. If it doesn't, that's when you begin to raise hell.

You shouldn't have to be doing double the work, as Sharpz said. Especially if your average coverage looks like four part. As rough as it is, I have to admit that permanent two-part coverage's saving grace is that 1) it's easy to see who's not pulling their weight and 2) both partners know they have to get their **** done or the whole day sinks, possibly even despite reinforcements eventually arriving.

I think you need to approach a barista or shift you are comfortable with and let them know of your frustration and ask what they would do. Cite the example with the full sink/neeeding WC. Those partners were probably frustrated that they ran out of WC and took it out on you. However, it sounds like there were at least 3 people on that shift, including yourself, so the shift or bar partner should have been constantly checking their supply of WC and should have had at least one more made before they ran out completely. If the sinks were completely full after being open 8 hours, that means the shift had not done (or had not delegated) any dish washing in order to prevent exactly that situation. To the shift who said you need to be a team player, I'd tell him that you were being a team player by clearing out the sink for the other partners on shift since no one else had done them and there was no way you could help the bar partner with WC until the sink was at least partially clear. Then I would decaf his drink in the future, what a stupid shift lead.

This job is definitely hard, and humbling. You also need a thick skin, or else this job will suck out your soul quickly. Hang in there, and if this keeps happening, escalate the conversation to your SM.

I have been an enthusiastic green apron girl for 6 months. I have spent hours studying recipes and procedures online with the hopes of promoting quickly. When I took this job, it was easily one of the most humbling things I have ever done. The job market tanking led to this single mom saying yes to a job that pays 1/5th of what I used to make. The SM who hired me obviously made some unrealistic promises and has since left the company. Despite every effort I have made, I am failing miserably. I have never seen a business reward half-assed work/workers like this. I was raised with a deep respect for work ethic. (As long as you gave your best, you were good) Taking pride in your work is a foreign concept to some at my store. For example, I was asked to make whipped creams before taking my 10. When I went to retreive the containers I found that none were clean. They were tossed (undischarged) into the sinks filled with mocha, grounds, and creamer. The store had been open for 8 hours and all 3 sinks were full. I organized it enough to use one sink and proceeded to follow proceedure to clean and then prepare the whipped cream. I handed them off to the barring barista and called out my "sliding to a 10". I was sarcastically chastised for taking a nap in the back. I was obviously unamused at the insinuation that I was lazy so my lead informed me that I threw the breaks off and I needed to be a "team player". Every task I do seems to take 3 steps because someone else didnt complete their job.. Those partners thrive at my store while I bust my **** to play catch-up and STILL receive snippy sarcastic comentary. Recently, an incident went undocumented and fearfully, I didn't press the issue. I don't want to be "that" girl. Can anyone offer some advice?

I did tell him to adjust my schedule and he said he would. The following week I find out he increased my days to open. I was really mad, so I got the label maker and put his name on the drains. Let him clean them.

Yeah, he is not too good for anything, this kid lives in an extremely ghetto apt complex in one of the worst areas of Houston. He is a former drug addict (and may still be I suspect) and is on probation for domestic violence. And when the DM comes around, he acts like he's been cleaning all week and totally kisses her ****. It's so annoying. Also I find out he used the same brush that he used to clean the drains to do dishes. I was so skeeved that I threw away the brush and acted like it just disappeared. The next week, I used a different brush to clean the drains and that very same day I see him doing it again when he was there to see me using it to clean the drains. So gross. He claims he has no time to clean. ****, there is time in the middle of day or at night. I do it all the time, i've managed to clean the ceiling during slow periods. It's not that hard. If everyone pitched in the place would a lot cleaner.

But yeah, about my coworkers, well they are just lazy and stupid at times. There is this one girl, when I am on the bar handling drinks for 10 customers while ringing up their orders, she just stands there looking at me like she's high or something. Like hello? Do something! Try washing me some pitchers!

Hmm..

About your schedules, try speaking with your manager about how it makes things difficult with school. Just tell tell him a few days here and there can be shifted around to help accommodate. You know, you'll have a more balanced schedule, so you'll be able to perform better in school and work.

Unless he's one of THOSE. You know, those people that don't care. They're very common. At which point you're only options are to leave or stay and deal with it.

It seems like you're adapting well to the stresses of the logistic aspects of the job, which is good. High five to that. If you're issue is with coworkers, elaborate more on what makes them "stupid", maybe we can help.

Your SM may actually be a clean freak, but he may also not want to do any cleaning because, ya know, he's too good for it. Its very rare for SMs to be really concerned with cleanliness. They sacrifice it often for "speed of service". It certainly sounds like the case with your low score lol. It may be he's just one of those self absorbed bosses who only really care about producing results to his boss and making things convenient for him.

Hey I'm new here. I got hired at a licensed Starbucks about a month ago. Already it's pretty frustrating. I'm still new and I'm already being left alone by myself because my manager is lazy. Our kiosk is pretty busy throughout the day, but thankfully i've been able to keep my cool under pressure. But back to my manager- he claims he's a clean freak but really he is not. I am left to do most of the cleaning by myself because by nature I am a clean freak. I guess I was only hired because I am clean and tidy. None of my coworkers care to keep the kiosk clean either. Our cleaniness rating is a 67 right now- which is horrible. Also my manager has me opening at least 4 days a week-mostly on the days when I have a full day of school, and on those days I don't get home until about 11pm and then I have to finish up homework and study, which is really messing up my sleep. Making drinks isn't really hard, it's just people I work with are kind of stupid.
Well there's my rant, any advice is appreciated.

Grandma, unfortunately, as a manager, you lacked one of the rights that hourly employees do have (in the US), which is the right to organize. The National Labor Relations Act protects many concerted (i.e. group) actions for "mutual aid and protection". That means that as long as we do it together, we cannot be fired for taking action against Starbucks. If someone is fired, and files a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, and they find merit with the case, it is then up to Starbucks to show that they had legitimate cause to fire you, and that they treated you like everyone else. Now, this is a slow process, so I'm not saying people should go nuts and rise up right away and let their identities be known. It's probably good to have a good support group among co-workers set up (a union perhaps) before doing that, so that you and your coworkers can start taking action immediately if the hammer comes down on you. At the same time though, our rights are established in the law, and I urge everyone to exercise those rights to their full advantage.

Also FYI when I spoke to attorneys re my term I was told that Cal. is an at will state which means that you can be fired for any reason. If they don't like you etc. You don't have to do anything wrong. It's up to you then to prove that you for fired for discrimination, etc which is hard to do and none of the 5 I talked to would take the case. Be careful with what you say.

A "wiki" is a collabrative tool for sharing and editing information. Password protected means you can't get in to see it if you don't know the magic word :)

Alright folks. Time to start turning some of these words into action. I think we should take up the admin's offer to set up a password protected wiki for anyone who wants in on this. Are others interested in discussing this further, in a less public venue? Does anyone have any alternative ideas to a password protected wiki on this site's server? I think we should go for it. I'm emailing the admin (available on the front page) to see about getting a wiki set up. It'd be good if at least a few of us could voice our support for this idea before admin puts too much work into it, to make sure it's worth the effort. Also, once the wiki is set up, it will be much easier for us to contact eachother any number of other ways. Farflung, you in? Keep in mind as well that my email is on the previous page of this post somewhere.

I have been out for the last month or so with a family emergency and just logged in to check the goings on for a minute and came across this... all I can is WOW!! Whatever I can do to support the cause. I think its an excellent idea of what needs to be done. Something anything to stop some of the **** that is put up with on a daily basis. I think my job is in ok standing where I am for the moment but who knows wth will happen in a year or so. I have been a barista for 5 years. If I didn't need this job I would have quit a long time ago. The economy sux and quite frankly doesn't look like it will get any better for a while. But there are days when working for the Bux is more than enough to make me want to sign up for basket weaving 101 and a nice steady thorazine drip. Much less turn in that two week. But I can't do it this job that doesn't pay squat is how I support my child.

Admin, that's a very generous offer. I think it would be greatly helpful. I think others will like the idea too. Let us know what you need from us to set up this board. Feel free to email me. If I recall, the site collects emails when signing up. You have my permission to use mine to contact me.

The revolution is on, my friends! And gaucho, you made many valid points in your previous post.
If the media is tipped off, our cause will be brought to the public eye. If anything, public opinion may prove to be sympathetic to our cause and give us the support we need. It is also paramount to talk with other baristas across the board-there's strength in numbers!
How much do you wanna bet that Sbux is reading this and preparing a memo?!
Farflung, you're making history! I agree, we should get the manifesto together, then figure out to get it into the open!
