I get the same thing and I've figured it out. As you fill a plastic cup it's like charging a capacitor (same thing as a battery only a faster charge and discharge). As you fill the cup your hand (and whole body essentially) becomes the negative on the outside of the plastic cup. The soda on the inside has a positive charge. The positive and negative electrons attract to each other until they are equal. If that means though your upper lip that they have to go, that's the path they will take.

oh I am glad it's not just me (well, it would be better if people weren't getting shocked, but still!). I'm a frequent customer, and I order a glass of water, no ice, with my baked goods all the time. EVERY single time I take a sip from the rim of the glass, it shocks me the second the water touches my lips! And there's kind of an audible pop sometimes too. Worse at some stores than others, but pretty consistent that it will happen. Even taking the cup home to a different environment doesn't help at all, neither does time. I thought maybe it was the water coming from that tap... it's pretty painful, I really hate knowing it's going to happen and almost dread taking that sip!

I get shocked all the time. It's those plastic cups... they've got a lot of static I guess. When I've got my arm next to a stack I can see my little arm hairs raising lol. Now I've got a phobia though... I'm scared to drink out of them! I never bother putting a lid on my own drinks, and when that drink hits my mouth I get an instant shock! I stick to paper cups now. But I'll still get a little jolt whenever a bit of frap or whatever spills out when I'm making drinks.

I don't get shocked making fraps at my store. BUT we have the old coffee grinder that doesn't have the little clicker thing that holds the coffee bag in place, and drops the grounds haha. So we have to hold the bag when we grind coffee for a customer, and if we touch anything metal we get shocked. And it really hurts. :[ I've been shocked through the apron from my button on my dickies before. I hate that grinder.

Well, all the spinning plastic and metal could accumulate a charge, and then the water-based beverage could carry it maybe? But that's why I asked about the steel counters, because that's the only time I've gotten shocked at work so far was the time I was borrowed at a place where all the electrical cords were lying in water on metal...

This sounds more like a potential grounding problem in your store's wiring, to be honest. I'm not sure frappuccino's contain anything that can really accumulate a charge. And if it's happening with other things on the metal counters, maybe it's time to call an electrician? Just saying. I know it's a stretch, but this could be hazardous.

Ah yes, the stacked cold cups are the absolute worst because sometimes even when you tap the stack to break the static, you go to grab it and it still shocks you. I am so glad it's not just me, because at my store it is just me.

So wait. I'm lucky enough never to have experienced this phenomenon so I'm very curious. Eye, are you saying that if some of the frap spills on you it shocks you? I worked at one store where all the counters were metal, and what with the pools of water everywhere (because god forbid you have a dry towel anywhere) the electrical cords and appliances were sitting in standing water on top of a fairly hefty sheet of stainless steel. I got a little zap while leaning over to get java chips or something, and after that I stood a couple inches away and kindof acted like the whole counter was hot lava, you know, in case it was.

Nope, I have worked at more stores than I can count with my fingers and it happens everywhere. This one time I was distracted and didn't do the tap thing before I reached for the door handle and it was so loud the people sitting in the lobby looked up. It was really embarrassing because with one of our partners was like, "Was that you?"

That happens to me all the time! But then again, I get static shock from everything. My partners make fun of me because without even realizing it, when I reach for the door (or my locker, or just about anything really), I do a quick little tap first before actually grabbing it. It breaks the static so it's not so bad.
