As you fill a plastic cup it's like charging a capacitor (same thing as a battery only a faster charge and discharge). As you fill the cup your hand (and whole body essentially) becomes the negative on the outside of the plastic cup. The soda on the inside has a positive charge. The positive and negative electrons attract to each other until they are equal. I'm a frequent customer, and I order a glass of water, no ice, with my baked goods all the time. EVERY single time I take a sip from the rim of the glass, it shocks me the second the water touches my lips! And there's kind of an audible pop sometimes too. Worse at some stores than others, but pretty consistent that it will happen. Even taking the cup home to a different environment doesn't help at all, neither does time. I worked at one store where all the counters were metal, and what with the pools of water everywhere (because god forbid you have a dry towel anywhere) the electrical cords and appliances were sitting in standing water on top of a fairly hefty sheet of stainless steel.
