As long as you aren't an imbecile that coughs all over the food I see no problem with working while sick. Just work register if you have a cold or something.

There's also the issue of people calling out "sick" or having a life threatening "catastrophe" all too regularly... I've seen virtually every excuse in the book in my store, and I as well as my other partners have to pay for someone elses irresponsibility.

Wow. I am under the distinct impression that working while sick is an EcoSure violation as well as a violation of Health Department guidelines.

Also, it's bad enough that I would be down one person while you're sick; you come in with a plague and now I get to play whack-a-mole with the schedule for two weeks while it makes its way through the rest of my staff and infects customers as well. No thank you. Stay home and rest up.

It's a shame that common sense is against company policy in so many ways. Any SM or ASM (or SS, for that matter) giving you a hard time for doing the responsible thing is just asking for a call to partner services.

It's crazy that getting written up is even an option. I mean why would you want someone to come in when they can barely stand due to a conflabbed kidney infection? I understand how **** it can be when you're down just one person and the shift isn't covered, (especially during rush or trying to close) but some managers are real ****.

1. It's out of your control.
2. What good would you be on the floor?
3. A doctor said it is not healthy for you to be there.

Jeapordize my health for $9/hr? Nah. Some people are indeed full of **** and always have to call out due to some "crisis". This definitely happens but your manager should be somewhat familiar with you and your habits so unless you're the partner who cried "kidney infection!" you should be good.

Also I never call out. Ever.

The same thing happened to me last year.

I got a kidney infection and my doctor said i couldnt go into work. Good thing too, I could barely even stand up. I went in on the way home from the doctors and gave them my note and the shift in charge got my shift covered for that day and my manager got my shifts covered for the remaining days I had to be out.

According to corporate its not your concern if youre sick, you call in and it magically gets covered. Unfortunately lower level management can suck and it becomes your responsibility to show up and show them youre dying and waiting til they get a replacement... or some variation of calling as soon as you know theres a problem and alerting tje masses if you want help... merky territory that only shows up if you scratch other people's backs.

so, i have a kidney infection and am getting all kinds of crap (via text) about missing yesterday and today, even though i voluntarily got a doctor's note and had my mom drop it off for me, since i was at home in agony. i also worked very hard to try to get both of the shifts covered, but the only people that cared enough to help couldn't because of school etc. and the ones that don't care don't respond.

i have a feeling a verbal might be coming up and had a couple of questions.

1) if i'm not feeling well, but i don't call in until i get the shift covered, should/does that count as an absence? basically, for my boss, it looks just like i switched shifts for one of a million reasons, and i got it covered, so why should it count as anything?

2) officially, can you get written up for absences that you had a doctor's note for? i'm guessing yes.

3) is there a place to access the employee manual online from home? or the other policy manuals?

thanks so much, partners.

A sore throat and raspy voice isn't enough reason to call off. I worked through WAY worse. If you were that bad then you should have called off. You should have said you had a fever. That would make you contagious.!Nothing your SM could do. As already stated, shift's responsibility to get you covered. If they can't, tough. If you can't work, you can't work. The only responsibility I believe you have when sick is if you miss three shifts in a row due to illness. In that case, you have to get a doctor's note.

Call PCC because your manager isn't allowed to force you to work when you are sick. You are not responsible for coverage and by law are not allowed to work because of cross contamination and contagion and stuff.

I got this really bad sore throat and it got to the point where it was extremely raspy and it put heavy strain on my voice when I spoke. I call my boss and say "I am sick and I have a really bad sore throat, I can hardly speak". She tells me that nobody else is gonna work my shift and she'll take it easy on me. I get there, she puts me on register, tells me I have to promote products to every customer, and eventually tells me that she does not sympathize me because I only had a part time shift that day and both my store manager, and shift supervisor laugh about it (when it really was not funny at all that I was suffering).
Customers showed concern every time I attempted to speak as it got worse and worse. By the time I got home, my throat was burning and I could not speak at all. Has any of your bosses screwed you over like this? And what would you do?

If you're puking and really sick, it's a QASA violation for you to even put on an apron.
You called in 12 hours in advance, the partner handbook says that's okay.
If you think you can tough it out for like the first 30 minutes until you get relief, then you can go if your shift really needs you and you feel benevolent. Otherwise, you notified or made an attempt more than 4 hours in advance, it's your store's responsibility to find the coverage or the SM is supposed to work the shift. That's why they get paid the big bucks.

You've done all you can do. At this point, I'd just suggest either calling in at open, or showing up. They may send you home once the next person come in, however if you're a cafe-only store, that means you most likely open with two people. If that is the case, then you should show up for the open, since it's against policy for one person to open a store.

Per the Handbook, if you are sick then you are supposed to call out and it is NOT your responsibility to find coverage. It specifically states in the Handbook that finding coverage for baristas who call out due to unexpected health issues is the on-duty Shift Supervisor's job. I mean it actually states "... finding coverage is not the responsibility of the partner..." if you had a fever then you were contagious and did the right thing calling out. If your SS or SM gives you any grief throw the handbook at them.

Also, they can't fire you for being sick.

Yaaaaay.... I think my manager wants me to go in with a fever :/

This is how you should prioritize your life:

1. your health/safety
2. your happiness
3. your family/friends/loved ones

This **** pisses me off. If you are sick, DO NOT GO IN. They cannot force you to work, or even switch with someone. Or even find someone to cover your shift. Next time, call off and hang up the phone. It sucks for them, but that's part of the shifts/ SM job.

So... this is the story... wtf do I do.

I left work the other night around 6 PM, after 8 hours of work I was okay for most of it, but in the last 30 minutes I really started feeling rough. Chills, sore throat suddenly got way worse because I was on bar and screaming drinks REALLY loudly at the handoff (it's REALLY loud, it wasn't my store, but they put the speaker right above the handoff point!), and I started shivering. This was good, SS came up and relieved me and told me to go home.

So, on my way out, I texted our senior SS (our SM was out of town) and said I'd probably be out tomorrow. This quickly turned into "definitely out" tomorrow. She told me to text the opening SS, who told me to switch with another person (Also an SS) so she could come in 2 hours earlier, thus giving me "more time to call around."

I threw my hands up after the switch was completed, went home, took a bunch of nyquil and tylenol and wrapped my head in pillows. I might have gotten two hours of sleep... it was that bad. I tried making a few calls to baristas in the area I know, and to a few stores, with no success. I woke up, and got a text from the SS I swapped with, asking me how I was feeling, but quickly turning towards "are you contagious." I told her that I had a temperature of 103, chills, aches, a sore throat, and could hardly talk or stand. She tells me "Well if you can't get anyone to cover my shift, technically, you still have a shift to work."

W... T... F...

I went to the doctor that night, got a prognosis and antibiotics. I feel a little better now (2 days later), but still have the fever and everything. Worked today, against my better judgment, and opened with the SS who told me that I had to come in. I told her my throat hurt, I wanted to be somewhere I didn't have to talk very much. She put me on R1. My throat hurts so much right now I want to cry (and I'm NOT very sensitive to pain). Deployment was a flaming mess, so even though I made my displeasure clear, she never moved me off R1, or anyone on to R1 during my breaks. I had to keep water next to the register, otherwise I wouldn't be able to talk (QASA nightmare). I asked to go home early because I felt awful, instead, the request wasn't even considered, and the SS spent the first hour and a half of the shift running around doing DCR stuff at a glacial pace while I opened the store (with the exception of the teas and iced coffee, to be fair) and dealt with a number of customers single-handedly while constantly running out of coffee until 7:30... I actually ran out of everything but decaf at one point because I couldn't even make it to the cubes without someone stopping me and barking an order at me. It. Sucked. And she wants to be a manager.

Unfortunately this SS is friends with the SM. I don't know what the hell to do. I feel like this is a violation of the regs, I called in 14 hours in advance of my shift, and even made it 16 hours, and they tried to put it on me, and then tried to get me to come in.

What should I do? I feel like I got punished for missing work today, it was so bad. The two SS's worked today and were pretty cold to me. I don't get it. What did I do wrong?
