OMG. I work in a licensed store and I know 100% what you mean, because stuff like this always happens. Maybe not with a venti cup of cold soy, but customers get sooooo angry for having to pay 45 cents. Like come on.
I had this old lady come in a few days ago and she ordered a tall soy latte and a bagel. I charged her including the soy since like I said, we're a licensed store. She got all pissy and said that if she would've known, she wouldn't have come and bought anything. She also said we should put signs up everywhere stating that. Practically everyone who has a registered card and had to pay for the extra whatever was fine with it.

Okay, so normally I just lurk around here and empathize with everyone's stories and sit and nod in agreement with how insane the Starbucks Consumers are becoming lately. I've worked at Starbucks for a year and a half now and have had my fair share of crazies come and go, but I always take it with a grain of salt. However, today made me re-evaluate my faith in the human race. I just had to let it out somewhere. The story goes:

It was quiet, I was working till while my co-worker was cleaning the espresso machine, etc. A woman walks in and orders a Venti Chai Tea, but she only wants it a quarter of a cup full and even ever so kindly shows me with her fingers how much a quarter of cup is. Red flag right there, I thought. That's not even up to the little icon on the cup. That's like a penny in the bucket in a Venti size. But whatever, I get it and hand it to her and she pays her $1.68. She walks away and suddenly I hear her voice at the bar talking to my co-worker,
"Could you steam some soy milk for me?"
I do not work corporate, it's licensed, customers must pay for Soy and Extra Syrup and Extra Shots. No one, and I mean NO ONE, before hand has ever complained about it.
"Sorry Ma'am, but if you want Soy you're going to have to pay for it." My co-worker replied.
"No I don't"
"Uh, yes ma'am you do, I believe it's 45 cents."
"So I can use ALL your creamers out here, for free and I can't get a drop of soy milk? I can use your Whole Milk, Nonfat, 1%, 2%"
Her cup was more then 3/4's empty. It wasn't a tea, but a Cup-o-Soy with a tea bag floating in it.
They bicker, and finally my co-worker hands her the soy (clearly we are not going to steam it for her, we don't steam everyone's milk for regular drip, she just thought she could make a ghetto tea misto using the policy against us). She said she would heat up her drink when she got home.
My co-worker hands her the Soy and we exchange awkward looks.
The woman was pouring the Soy in her drink when the carton ran out. I'm not even kidding when I say the following:
She had, if you look at your thumb right now, and look at the tip of your finger to where your thumb bends in the middle, there was that much room left in her cup.
"Uhm, can I get more Soy?"
The "Just Say Yes Policy" is just thrown out the window now.
"No ma'am"
She then goes on again about how she can use the free milk in creamers, and how Starbucks is discriminating against her and people who can't drink dairy. Then she finally asks to speak to a manager. I gladly picked up the phone and called the manager of the entire store (not just the Starbucks, like I said we're licensed) as the manager is making his way down the customer comes up to us and in a really, really condescending tone goes "So I bet you girls never bend the rules here huh? You can't just give me soy."
My co worker and I got really offended, don't accuse of us bending rules. Especially when we ALREADY HAVE FOR HER by giving her half a bloody carton of soy. Finally the manager gets there and the lady makes us seem like we're being mean little bullies, and we say it's policy that people pay for their soy. Again, according to her Starbucks is apparently racist to non-dairy drinkers.

I explain the policy, again, and again. The manager tells me just to give her the thumb nail of soy and he would call the district manager to check. The women was so persistent and kept taking and taking repeatedly. She even said we we're making her late for work! Even though she said she was going to heat it at home? Uh-huh, okay. The manager went outside to ask the Corporate Starbucks located just across the street (why didn't she go there for free Soy...?) and was told that licensed stores, DO charge for Soy.

Seriously though, it's not the fact that the woman wanted soy, or the fact she wanted so much. It's 45 cents! You can bring it a 4L ice cream bucket and order a short drip in it for all I care, pay the damn 45 cents and I'll give you the soy! Don't be that cheap! And rude!

I hope she comes back to the store can deny her yet again, and this time the manager will know the policy and adopt the Say No Policy for people who abuse and cheat the system. Seriously Howie, you treat your employees like **** and we're the only thing stopping you from bankruptcy and you stick this immobilizing "Say Yes even when the customers are running us completely into the ground Policy".

Don't even get me started on people who ask for cups.

UGH!
