I raised my eyebrows and just stared at her, then I realized she was not getting the point and asked, "a regular soy what?" She meant a tall soy coffee with steamed soy. I'm sorry, how the fruck am I supposed to get that from regular soy?

@Karmachameleon, Yerba Mate is SOOO good! :)

And whenever people say regular I just stand there and stare at them for a few seconds until they realize they're stupid and say the actual size. If they don't get it I say in the most annoyed voice I can muster "TALL, GRANDE, or VENTI????" What gets me is when they still say "regular" after that! It don't even think it's that they're stupid, I think they just refuse to "conform" to the Starbucks lingo like they're too proud or something. But they're not too proud to pend over $4 for a Latte.

When they say regular I just ask Tall? To me, that is regular. But to some it means Grande. They should just say the size.

As for Chai lattes, I never put water. People will bring it back if I do. And teas, I ask. If black, I give Awake. If green, Zen

The "regular" thing has gotten under my skin too, and since I just quit and my last day is Friday I've been spending the past few weeks being a **** to annoying customers. I'm Argentinian, so the closest thing to regular tea would be green tea so I've been giving it as opposed to black "Awake tea" which everyone else assumes is regular, saying "well, regular is different for each person. I regularly drink yerba mate which is kinda like a green tea, so I gave you a tea, which by my standards, is regular. I can change for the hibiscus tea, which we call Passion, that's what my Mexican customers regularly get." :')

@coffeefairy, along the bagel vein, I've had two people in the past week order a chai with "just nonfat milk", which apparently means with no water and I was supposed to get that from the fact that they said "just". Is it really that hard to say "nonfat no-water chai"? No. No it's not.

I worked at DD for 16 months, and there are half a dozen in my city as opposed to one Starbucks, so I always just put cream and sugar in when someone orders a regular, because chances are, that's what they want.

I think the word regular should be stricken from the ordering vocabulary.

Regular coffee - Yes, I figured that you didn't want a latte because you said coffee, not latte, or cappuccino, or misto, or frappuccino . . .

Regular tea - doesn't exist. If you drink Lipton, you're not a tea drinker. If you don't like coffee, and can't tell me that you prefer English Breakfast to Earl Grey, then go next door to McDonald's and get a diet Coke.

Regular size - the size I think of when I think of "regular" is grande. If you don't specify, I'll just do a grande, which will probably **** you off, cause you were thinking tall. Actually, you were thinking small, and that you were upset because you've been coming into Starbucks for 10 years and still don't know the terminology, and will chew me out when I say tall, because you're too myopic to adapt.

This segues into people who order a plain bagel, thinking they're being clear on not wanting butter or cream cheese.

Why do people order a regular size? It means something different to every damn person. I would consider regular to be 16 oz. but some 12 oz. Use any terminology but regular. It's not that hard to read our menu and use our terms, damn neanderthals! Or at least a small or large--universal terms.
