this issue annoys me too. We're in a mall setting so our manager has laxed the policy so that people can shop and then return to get a .52 refill. It gets annoying when you get to work at 6, serve someone their coffee on their way to work and then you see them at lunchtime getting a refill ... really?

We had this lady one time come in and give me this email from corporate she had printed stating that she is entitled to a .52 coffee refill no matter what her original drink was. I told her I was aware of the policy and didn't understand why she handed it to me. She then said that she had purchased a latte at a different sbux and wanted a refill. I carefully reviewed the policy with her "same store visit" and she said it didn't apply to her. After debating this issue with her for a few minutes I called over the SM who supported my position. She asked for our DM's number and proceeded to call him who then told my SM to just say yes as we didn't want to lose this customer.

I now just say yes to pretty much everything ... you want 5 shots of espresso in your tall latte but don't want to pay extra? Yes! ... you want to order a venti caramel frapp but split into two tall cups for your two brats cuz you're too cheap to order to talls and also want caramel walls, whip cream and extra caramel drizzle on both? Sure! You want steamed soy with 2 pumps classic and 5 scoops matcha but only want me to charge "add soy", "add matcha", "add classic" and then you pay with your registered sbux card so your handcrafted beverage only costs you .52? Absolutely!!!

All this with a smile on my face cuz they can't hear the screaming obscenities in my head... someone please come to Detroit and shoot me - oh wait, I can just go out to 8 Mile!

It bothers me because as a barista I'm supposed to follow the policy, and then my boss comes behind me and undermines the f**ck out of me in front of a customer. Sure, I'm getting paid the same no matter what, but d**amn if you'll make me look like an idiot.

The refill policy a) just makes sense because you can't leave any business and come back expecting a refill and b) it's the one little bit of power we have!

As for the other stuff, it's just us being frustrated with people. We are behind the counter all day so we know how things should run. The customers don't get it because they don't realize what needs to be done to get them what they want. So that's why they ask for extra caramel when you've already handed the drink off or order frappuccinos when they wanted something hot. The little annoying sh-t that just makes you mad because you knew that if the customers paid a little more attention, they'd get it right. Yeah, it's annoying as **** but I don't let that specific stuff bother me.

So MoPar, your argument is that if it's against the rules, it shouldn't matter because it doesn't affect you directly? Separate from the labor calculation issue Ibblet mentioned, would you ever go into another place of business and demand they gave you something at a 75%+ discount, and then cause a scene if they did not? I think some of the frustrations here are because we are forced to CHEERFULLY follow so many arcane rules (e.g., do we really have to say 'Frappuccino blended coffee beverage?' do we really have to put the venti no classic no water iced tea in the shaker? do we really have to smile and say 'no problem at all!' when some brat comes in, takes horizon milks from the RTDE case, and stomps on them to make them explode while his mom happily chats away on the cell phone?) and then these people get mad at us for not breaking the rules and risking a condescending conversation from the supervisor/manager about being a team player? I think people treat Starbucks baristas differently than they do bartenders, which I think is a similar sort of job. I think people assume that Starbucks is a giant corporation, and the whole tired meme of 'Starbucks and their funny drink names are so expensive hurrrrrr' ignores the fact that we're pretty competitively priced with other places you can get coffees/treats. And people somehow conflate Starbucks, the corporation (doing OK) with Starbucks baristas (barely scraping by) and act like we're some kind of robber barons or something, instead of merely the people who want to get their order, make it really well, and quickly move on to the next person so we can get to the damn dishes.

Was that too long? I dunno; if you don't get it from that rant I fear you might just not get it.

Well being at a store that is deathly low on labor with way to many partners, i for one try to get as much money out of people as i can. Because TBH i really need the hours. And i know that if my Sm see's me upselling then i get more hours. I also cant stand having to brew countless pitchers of IC and Iced tea because they **** want free **** all the time.
Basicly they are costing the store money and not giving us hardly any labor with their refill thus giving the store less and less and less hours. That means i have to pick between gas and food for yet another week.

The refill thing. People come to your store, asking for a refill, and its a clear violation of policy. The reason why so many people do it is because they can get away with it without anyone saying anything. Because people just don't care lol. I mean, you guys are there for 8 hours anyway, and you get paid by the hour, not sales, so why do you guys care so much if they want a refill (when they honestly think its okay to ask for one) or when they don't know what they're ordering and take forever or when they want extra caramel with more caramel on top?
