As a customer if I am asked my name during the course of small talk (not to write on my drink), and they (barista) tell me theirs unprompted then I feel comfortable calling them by name thereafter.

I don't feel that just because their name is displayed on the nametag that it's proper to just refer to them by name out of the blue.

Idk, maybe I'm just weird.

I work at a Starbucks inside of Target. We have Target name tags but ever since some guy looked at it creepily & said "thank you, then my name" I told them I lost that garbage. Haha.

My solutions:
1. Nickname (stated above)
2. Don't take off jacket (it's cold in my store anyway)
3. If nametag, draw barcode.
4. ...
5. Profit.

I like wearing my name tag but some customers just make it creepy. This guy comes in all the time and says my name in Spanish and he always asks when is my next shift, he is so creepy. Take your donut and your coffee and get outta here sir! I could just hide my name tag and give myself another name.

The chalk tags are SO tacky looking. I'd rather an actual name tag, although I understand that they would get forgotten in the laundry daily. I'm going to beg my DM to let me embroider my personal aprons (I used to work at a LC) tomorrow.

I don't mind the idea of name tags, but only because they are the lesser of two evils. My store currently has a laundry service. If we had embroidered aprons, my SM says we'd have to wash them ourselves. I am SUPER broke and use a laundromat to wash my clothes. I COULD NOT afford to be washing my apron all the time!

I can't even afford to wash my work clothes all the time. Which is why I have enough to last me a whole month so at the very least I can do a proper load with them.

I loled at the prison tag.

Yeah wearing a name tag definitely doesn't change much. In my experience the biggest difference is going to be in those customers who take time out of their day to realize you're a human being with a name and they use it when they thank you.

Embroidered aprons sounds stupid though. Mines going to be extremely filthy if that happens.

I've had to wear a name tag for the last 2 years. And an ID clipped to my shirt with my unpronounceable full first and last name. It sucks. But... it's not the end of the world.

Sometimes customers walk up to the counter and address me like we're best friends. And I've never seen them before. Maybe they're trying to be nice... but it's awkward. Especially when they don't see the shortened name tag and start trying to say my full name. "Ghjieiulouuuhhheiwlian...?" Uh.

Also, if there is in any way to make a joke about your name, you will probably hear it twice a day. "Oh. Yeah. Ah. Ha... ha. Haven't heard that one." And people like to tell me about how, "My cousin's ex-girlfriend's sister is named Unsweetened too!"

But for the most part, I don't think many people even notice. Once, just for fun I wore someone's old prison ID all day, with big bright red letters across it: "OFFENDER". Even my coworkers didn't notice, and none of the customers said anything. Or, maybe they were afraid to? :)

I don't really give a damn if we have our names displayed or not (as long as it is limited to the first name). And while it may be tackier if we have to use the mini chalkboard ones, I foresee it making life a little easier with new hires and also those occasions where you forget your apron at home and are forced to use a nasty mystery apron from the back (assuming that there are a few spare name tag things you could borrow).

i'd go on about the whole "third place" thing but we all know that starbucks is well trained in making a series of noises that get a positive reaction.
i don't have heaps of work experience, so i can't say much. my previous job was at a theatre, & i didnt have to wear a nametag there. so while i'm not dramatically opposed, i'm not enthusiastic.
& it's not as though asking for a name is a hard thing, yknow? a customer filled out a survey recognizing a barista by name, so "hey whats your name" is not a big deal of a question. but whatever everything is just incentive to find a better job because lol whatever nothin i can do about it

We're going to be getting ours embroidered, because the consensus at our store is that nametags look tacky. I'm supposed to scope out prices, figure out how many we're embroidering. I'm tempted to go with the best possible quality and F the price, but then we might get stuck with tacky **** nametags.
