I am really sorry to hear that. Hope things get better for you :(

I know a lot of managers who worked their way up. Sad part is that the majority were very hard working but didn't get promoted until they realized they were going to have to kiss a** in order to promote. Not all, some promoted on their hard work alone, but it's still sad.

My SM started from the ground up when she was 19. She just stopped caring, learned how to get away with very little work, and its finally catching up with her. All of our new hires see her example and that's why they are the way they are. Our of our 3 shifts two of them don't care, do bare minimum, and then blame others. The other one deserves to be ASM but our DM won't let anyone be promoted. I'm the only one that has something to lose. Everyone else lives with their parents and arei n school and just see this job as easy money. They don't see it in the long term the way I do, since I can't afford school and I don't live off anyone but myself. Its extremely frustrating to see my coworkers just coast along while I'm doing most of the work. I don't even want to think about what goes on during the closing shift.

Yeh, the whole everything going to hell thing is a constant in the Bux, I guess. Sometimes, morale just hits that critical mass of sinking, and everything just goes to héll. It sucks you have to pick up all the slack and keep the store from collapse.. it's a thankless and barely paid job someone has to do.

And, the SMs I've met that weren't outside hires usually were megalomaniacs or snivelling company men. I wager it's easier to hire someone from the outside, instill a bunch of bullcrap in them, and then let them run a store into the ground. In a diabolical Machiavellian way, it's an easy way to clean house- you stick someone totally incompetent and useless in charge, and morale tanks so badly that you start losing veterans left and right. When that happens, they're just replaced with minimum wage newhires who are usually just thankful to have a job.

D: That sounds awful. I'm glad I have legitimately mature shifts. Speaking of SMs, do they ever hire those from in house?

Things at my store have been a bit volitile lately. Our SM went on vacation and our DM came in a couple times and was NOT happy with the way the store was being run. Shift gaps and other issues. 3 people late per shift, at least one person not showing up at all. Seriously. Our SM may not have a job when she gets back. Because of all the problems with the partners punctuality I find myself coming to work on my days off so people can take halves or so the shift can do the deposit and IMS. I'm exhausted, no one is pulling their own weight. I find myself making drinks for drive thru and handing them out because I can't find the DT partner while simultaneously trying to keep up with the cafe drinks. I'm so tired. And I'm getting angrier and angrier on the floor because I feel like I'm working by myself and everyone is wondering why I'm so cranky and bossy practically begging someone, ANYONE, to do SOMETHING. If things go the way we think they're headed I might actually be glad. A more responsible SM and getting rid of the lazy, careless baristas is exactly what my store needs to be the efficient, fun place it used to be.
