I was a shift for several years with the same manager. I would hear complaints about this or that not being done properly. I would take it upon myself to make sure that my closes were perfect. Everything was stocked, everything shined, teas and iced coffees were prepped for the following day, all prep was made at the end of the night so it wouldn't run out during the day, heck, we were even able to get pastry case ready to go some nights. We didn't get all this done because we were dead, we got it done because we busted our butts all night. When I would get there at 430,for a 10pm closing, there would be no closing duties started, cafe would be a mess, everything would need restocking and it would be busy with the after school/after work travelers, and then a full cafe of students spreading out on tables with their computers and books. So on a 6 hour shift we did a heck of a lot, but there was never any praise or thanks for going what I think was above and beyond for setting up partners for the next day. But if I didn't get the garbage taken out at night (sorry, but with 2 people on, rules are rules, no one in the store alone, and no one taking garbage out after dark), or the ice bin wasn't crammed full when we left I would get nasty notes from my manager informing, not so politely, in large scrawling letters across the duty roster that the ice bins need to be stocked at the end of the night. I had to highlight the part of the duty roster where it says for opening duties that one of them was stock the ice bins. As being nothing but a closer, I was set up for failure every shift I worked. So when my final review was done and I saw what he thought of me, that was it. I think it was pay back for the "confidential" manager review I and the rest of the staff gave him. Everyone who got a review after his, has gotten a poor one themselves, except for the one who is transferring stores to become an ASM at a new store, but that is because he is one of the only ones in the district to train ASM's and doesn't want it to reflect badly on him.

There are so few people who stay with the company in any position for a long period of time that you would think they would have a little more appreciation for the ones that do stay. Lately it seems the turn over is so high, you can go into a store where the majority of people have been there less than a year.

Your self review is only so the SM can see where there is a difference in performance expectations. If the SM thinks you do not meet expectations in a particular area, but you have given yourself perfect marks, there is an opportunity to discuss the expectations in that area.

Reviews are supposed to be submitted BEFORE being delivered, so that they cannot be changed. This is on purpose.

Some people cannot fathom that they might be average...or maybe even above average...they have to get perfect reviews or somehow think they're being treated unfairly. I've got news for you, though...most people ARE average, and do an average job. That is WHY it is called average! The majority of reviews I did for Starbucks were "meets expectations". Few exceed expectations...when they do, they tend to get promoted. When they do not meet expectations, they tend to get fired. This is common sense, which we all know isn't actually that common.

My SM is sometimes inconsistent in sitting down giving us our reviews. She always process the paperwork on time and I see my raises so I'm not complaining, but it'd be nice to know where I stand and what I could be doing better. I asked her for my review cuz I know when you see the "R" next to your name on the schedule it means you're supposed to have one. She scheduled it cuz I kept bugging her (made sure to ask her on monday when she was doing the schedule). At my review, she gave me the "Barista Success Profile" which is what she uses to write our reviews. It has the 5 general areas of success (putting customer first, working well with others, leading courageously, developing continuously & achieving results). You might be able to access it on the portal and print one out for yourself so you can see the behaviors that tie to the 1-4 rating. Try and print it ahead of time if you can (or ask a shift). I'm glad to have it so I can see why she gave me the 2's (which she explained is "meeting expectations" and means I'm doing my job as required & there's nothing wrong with receiving 2's) but also shows what it takes for me to be receiving 3's

Good luck! keep us posted!

@thinkdeep, I'm in the Chicago area. My issue is I need the hours that Starbucks offers. It is perfect for my husband's and my schedules, we work exactly opposite schedules so no childcare needed. And neither of us makes enough money for childcare considering I work at Starbucks and we know what they pay and even though he got promoted recently it came along with all new expenses, as always happens when we end up thinking we'll have more money haha. So anyway...
I will have to remember about the not signing thing tomorrow when we talk about it... my SM is relatively manipulative and so I have to make sure that I stand my ground if I don't agree. The time and attendance part is where I am going to have issue if she gives me a low score, along with dress code, because both of those are easy 4's in my opinion. I have only been late once in my year and a half at this store and twice total in 2.5 years- and I am 15 minutes early every day because I am so neurotic about being late... which means I'm the only shift who actually has the store open within the 10 minute early rule that we're supposed to do.
I do know that one girl went to the DM about her review already- he was not receptive, said something along the lines of "well it's not going to make or break your career". However, that will be my next step should things not go well. I have a bunch of other things I want to bring to him regarding the way she has been running the store and I know that they had a sit down a couple weeks ago and he was annoyed at her so they're definitely not bff or anything. I was just waiting to make any waves until my review, because I didn't want it to get out that I made complaints about her to him- it just bugs me a lot because the morale in my store has gone way down largely thanks to her and I cannot stand not only me dreading work more than I ever have but knowing that everyone else I work with does the same thing now. I feel like I need to stand up and attempt to do something about it- so within the next few weeks I feel like s***'s gonna go down haha. Thanks guys!

I would be given the same sheet that my manager would use and grade myself. The last review I had (which led me to quit) he had filled out with all 2's (The worst review I have ever had in my almost 9 years with the company) I had to argue with him on a few of them, but he didn't tell me my scores. It wasn't until signing it that I saw what he gave me. Just remember that at the bottom of the sheet it says that by signing it, you are NOT agreeing to his/her scoring. I had to request, in writing, 3 times to get a copy of that review. I was always there, always in dress code, know how to make drinks, know how to clean the store, know customers drinks, and yet he felt I wasn't exceeding expectations in these areas, but was just meeting them (hence the 2's)

I think it is different in the States vs Canada (where I am from) We have never gotten a cost of living increase, ever. Minimum wage in my province just went up and with it I was going to get a 30 cent increase. (minimum wage went up a total of $$1.75 an hour, from $8.50-$10.25) My last review I was given a 1% increase, equaling 12 cents.

There must be a number to call, if you have any concerns about your review, or someone you could talk to. Provided the DM isn't buddy buddy with the manager, that would be the person to talk to.

good luck!

I've got a few points:

-On the raises, the determined COLA (annual cost of living adjustment) determined by the Social Security Administration in October 2011 (the rate that makes sure that the inflation matches your current income) is 3.6 percent. A new percentage will be revealed in Sep 2012 and take place in Oct 2012. I would say that if you have been receiving 3.6% annually, you don't have any grounds for complaints, but that mirrors that you have continued working for the same company, and should receive about 5 percent annually. I've heard some stores do it twice annually, or four times a year, so make sure you get AT LEAST 3.6 percent.

-If she "already processed" your review, that gives the presumption that it cannot be altered. I would tell her to go have coitus (filters suck) with herself.

-The only two categories which you could probably contest and win on your review are the uniform and arrival time (can't remember the term for it) categories. If you're in dress code, she can't give you a "2" for it, because you are IN DRESS CODE. The same thing with the promptness thing: you can't legally work if you are not clocked in and you can't clock in early, you shouldn't receive anything under a "4" if you have been more than 2 minutes late less than three times.

-You may be able to fight the other categories, but let's face it. SBUX is about making money, not giving employees raises.

-I personally think that it is okay to schedule STORE meetings outside of everyones availability, but the meeting should be mentioned a MONTH ahead of time, and have a definitive time three weeks in advance.

-A manager shouldn't be able to give a six-month review on one shift.

Start looking for new jobs if you meet resistance. If you don't mind me asking, what metro-area do you live in? I may have a job lead for you at a national mortgage company that contracts local people to do data entry work at courthouses. I did it for quite a while, and it pays pretty well.

My advice is suck it up and live with it. The manager fills out the review, that's it. I've never in my many years had the opportunity to review myself, not that it would have make a difference. I know it stinks, but that's just the way it is at Starbucks. Try to find a better job where you can actually explain the reasons why you deserve a raise, because it just doesn't happen at the bux.

Okay so question for you all and your review experiences:

I've gotten 2 reviews in my almost 2.5 years with the company... got a 6 month review, got promoted right before my 1 year so I just got my shift raise, didn't get a real review at 1.5 years, just the fixed shift raise, and then got a 2 year review. My 2.5 year review is coming up and I mentioned it to my SM, like, hey how are you going to go about doing that, because she's been scheduling meetings and stuff outside of everyone's availability and then expecting us all to just rearrange our lives to be at them- wanted to make sure that didn't happen with my review.
She was like, oh well I'll just give you your review on your shift- here's the scoring sheet that you can fill out so we can talk about it, I'm probably going to process it before we talk.
So I was thinking about that and later that day I asked her, "Well what happens if I score myself differently than you scored me in a certain category"
She was like, "Oh, it doesn't matter."
I was very confused... and she reiterated, it doesn't matter, once she processes it that's it, no arguments, no changing the score, nothing.
Since this b*** started at our store I've done nothing but go out of my way to meet her scheduling demands, cover for her a$$ when she screws up our ordering, take on an extra project that, even when I explained it all to her and it was something she asked me to take over in the first place, she still managed to screw up all parts that she was involved in... plus deal with the animosity she has brought to our store, her poor attitude and lack of work ethic definitely brings down the mood of all of us as much as we try to not let it get to us. And yet... I'm expected to just be okay with whatever she scores me on my review, no questions asked? Plus, all I've heard from others who have already gotten their reviews from her is that they have been AWFUL. And these are not reviews for awful partners, because we do have some people who are... well, awful is too strong a word but I wouldn't score them that highly. But these are for relatively good, long-term partners who I really enjoy working with, so I was shocked to hear that they got bad reviews. Haven't heard anything about any good ones.
Then on Monday, when she called me on my day off to ask me a stupid question... yeah, she mentioned that she already processed my review and we'll chat about it the next time I see her. She must have known that I filled out the scoring sheet and was planning to give it to her and ask her to please discuss the areas where she was going to score me differently BEFORE processing it. Has anyone else ever had an experience like this? Any advice for what to do if my review is less than awesome?
