My store has been operating for two weeks on -3 VTI labor, and 2% non coverage. It sucks. Not only is it happened at our store NOW and DURING the holidays, it stays that way at least one more quarter. And yes, citizenpat is correct when saying that the requirements for hours need to be in effect, and at my store it is March, not April. So... with that said... I do agree that Sbux sucks the life out of you... and now especially when we are all overworked and stressed. I have come to the conclusion that I am just going to go to work, do what I can, customers are going to have to wait longer... and then I clock out and go home. No longer will this be something I love doing for eight hours a day. I will be a Starbucks Robot.

If you put in less then 23 hours a week or only work 2 days a week, your done by april...change your availability to work weekends, both days and you will make it, that is if you want to cause by that time you will realize that they have squeezed every ounce of blood from you due to labor cutbacks announced last week. If you feel understaffed and overworked now, just wait till after the holidays, they are cutting your labor back. Your store used to operate at 6 % NON coverage hours, which usually added up to 23-35 hours, depending on your weekly sales. You were also required to staff with a 0 % variance daily meaning no extra labor (partners) on the floor, only what you need. Starting December 15th your stores will be expected to operate at -3% variance and 2 % non coverage. This means the only non coverage your store will get is so your manager can try to cram 30 hours of work into 8 hours on admin monday ( by the way your manager,if he's any good is probably their alot longer on mondays so he can take care of the store, provide for the community and develop his partners. If these things are getting done, give him/her a break, they really work their **** off for HORRIBLE PAY), and maybe a couple hours for tips. So staring now YOU will be expected to work harder, do more especially with the tea coming out next year, with LESS labor. Also no non coverage means your deep cleaning will still be expected to get done just while your working the floor, understaffed. UNDERSTAFFED ON PURPOSE, STRAIGHT FROM GOOD OLD HOWARD SHULTZ MOUTH....

a few more store closures wouldn't surprise me. starbucks has simply saturated the market. here in london there's a starbucks opposite a starbucks on oxford street. if you do that it definately means there are too many stores. it took them 10 years to take over the british highstreet so i can't even imagine how it must be in america.

by the way, hats of to you guys for managing a DT as well. never seen that here. A DT at starbucks. WTF?

The problem is that they built their business model and cost structure around being a "luxury" brand. But being a luxury brand means you have to maintain product quality and service delivery. It also means that you can't be too available, when they went crazy opening new stores, moved to the automated machines and added the DTs they broken their implied brand promise. So they aren't special anymore but if they cut their prices they will make themselves even less special so people are less likely to pay even the new lower prices, and their cost structures start to get out of step.

Basically they have painted themselves into a corner and they will need some really really innovative thinking to get out of - and that does not mean Vivanno and oatmeal!

If Starbucks wants to stay in business they need to lower their prices. That's it. People complain about $4 lattes when the economy is good, and just stop buying when they can't afford them anymore.

How about cutting all funding for R&D on new food/drinks, as well as advertising for that new stuff, and lower drink prices by $.15?

Of course they would probably double the number of new drinks and just fire half the employees to make up the difference.

I'm not sure if Howard knows how to deal with this besides doing the worse. I wouldn't be sure what else you can do besides that to save a company.Stores are closing and people are going to work less and deal with more stress of not having enough people on the floor. How are baristas the heart and soul of the company when their hours are getting cut?

sorry, but i haven't seen nor do i have access to that segment. but what i do know, is that our SM told us that they will probably be closing more stores, and most likely it will be close to 600, if not maybe more.

Hey,
Rumor has it that there was a longer segment with Katie Couric in which Howard Shultz told her he might close up to 600 more stores and lay off 2000 more partners. Has anyone else seen this segment or have access to it?
