Hey apekhutan - I would try to get through the probationary period then go find a company owned SB to work for - you will be "trained/cerified" which makes you more appealing to a SM - yah license stores suck - I am sorry - I get **** at SB but License Store are worse!

Also Barista Championships are REAL - I think the food network featured it once - pretty cool and some seriously talented baristas - like we use to be... real creamy foam and properly pulled shots - oh those were the days....

Apekhutan - take all with a grain of salt - lot of bitter and angry people here....:)

mestrou - where did you come from????? really if you are really a good manager/good at the hospitality industry - then you would know that if you can "hard" crew people the chances of NO Shows and Dumbshits is less likely....you do have put in your time to prove yourself. Yes we are a norm - we put availability in writing - yes we wouldn't hire you if it didn't meet the availability. Bottomline is there are managers out there who don't tell you how it really is....

Also remember the person scheduling has a responsibility to the business.....whose ever it might be....

I have worked in the service industry for ove 20 years and the company I work for does stick to your hours of availablity. You may have your hours cut if you can't work peak time periods or you may be offered differnt hours. We also consider that at the time of your hire. If the positions we are filling doesn't fit into your time frame we don't hire you. Plus we put that in writing, and we don't change it unless you fill out new availablity request forms. So don't think Startbucks is the norm for the service industry they are not. No I do not work for Starbucks!

There are a couple of DVDs on it. They use LaMarzocco's. No bull ****. There are some Barrista's that average 60,000 a year so you better believe they are competive about it. If there can be a Halo championship with thousands at stake you damn sure believe that there is something out there for Barristas.

It isn't entirely true in the service industry either. I have worked many, many jobs in retail and food service. I have had relatively stable schedules. Starbucks is truly the worst situation if you want any stability at all. I had never been kept so off balance with hours. So glad I'm out of there now!

That isn't entirely true. In the service industry, this may be the case. However, most jobs in Corp America have pretty set schedules. I know, in our call center, you work the same hours, everday, every week, unless you sign up for a flex schedule. I can tell you what my schedule is going to be next July or Aug. It’s the same as I am now. Most companies in fact have set schedules. I think the service industry is the exception to this actually.

Starbucks availability is not cast in stone. Even at corporate stores a manager can disregard your availability if it doesn't meet his or her labor needs. Most companies in the food service and retail industry have this same policy. In fact, I don't know of any company that won't change your hours if they need more coverage - especially during peak times. Rule of thumb, if you want a job you need to be willing to work whatever hours they give you. If you simply cannot work whatever hours they give you find a place that you can. They are under no obligation to meet your "availability." No company is and most companies won't as there are people out there willing to do the job if you aren't.

Well, I know, here in AZ ( I live in Chandler) you can make almost $8 an hour at taco bell, so I would think 'Bucks would have to pay along those lines, or the would have everyone retard that got fired from Jack in the Box working at Starbucks. Nothing agaist Jack in the Box, I've just never had a clerk there with more the a 52 word vocabulary (in english anyway) and the brain power to complete a paint by number.

I believe that the starbucks I work at is "liscenced" [or something like that] We get free drinks/pastries but that's about it. I don't know of anyone else getting any kind of benefits at all.

For some reason, I'm getting paid 8.25 an hour and I've only been there for 4 months. I don't know if it's a typo, but I'm not going to ask anyone to correct it and I feel incredibly lucky for it. [I live in Arizona, btw, and minimum wage here is currently 6.75]

Yeah, I think working for one of those "licensed" stores is even worse than actually working at starbucks. The pay is probably about the same, crappy. At an actual starbucks store the benefits are out of reach of most people. The policies are even more draconian. You should read some of the other posts here by disgruntled employees. If your coworkers and boss are nice to you, you are one step ahead. It seriously sucks working for starbucks.

Hiya there. I'm a new Starbucks employee and just started a little under two weeks ago, and have yet to become barista certified.

I work at a Starbucks, but it's owned/franchised/something by a larger company. As such, I don't receive any of the Starbucks benefits. So that's pretty crappy. Additionally, this company has a policy regarding changing your availability and the like. I'm unable to do this in my first three months, and so I've been unable to do that. I'm going back to school the beginning of January and my three months are going to be "up" at the end of that month. So, I don't know.

I don't feel entirely confident with what I'm doing but my training has been going pretty well. My bosses and coworkers are nice enough, too, but I was just wondering if anyone has any imput on my situation.

It seems kind of crappy to not have benefits/a free drink/free beans/a discount...et cetera...so I was just thinking about my options. If they don't want to let me change my availability then I guess I'd have to quit, but I'd ideally like to wait it out and then respectfully leave and go work at an actual Starbucks. What is the starting pay usually at a normal store? I guess mine might be more if I already had experience and was fully trained, but even so. Any thoughts? Thanks!
