True Story.

Did you know that being sexually assaulted doesn't mean you can call off work and maybe...pull your life back together? No, no. You are expected to still show up and serve someone a latte.

So, I quit. Then my assistant manager put up a nasty comment about me on facebook and my manager wrote me a cold, mean message about returning my shift keys. I asked him if I could confidentially explain to him what happened so I could leave on good terms and he ignored my request and sent a meaner message asking about the keys.

So much for "being involved"

Ok, I got fired from Starbucks after about 4 months. So here's why I hate Starbucks.

*Their coffee tastes bad. Yeah!!! I've tried to make myself appreciate the "true coffee taste", "the right acidity and fruity/nutty flavor" and now I don't have to!

*Their sandwiches and yogurts are way over-priced.

*They make you go to another store to bring stuff their store ran out of. Often, they don't even give you a cart. Once I was carrying a big box of honey AND a huge bag of sugar with my bare hands (I'm a girl) from one store to another... The sugar bag got torn at the bottom and sugar was spilling onto the street.. it was torture! I couldn't move my hands when I was back at our store.

*2 weeks into my employment they made me open the store for the 1st time.. with my manager... I was looking forward to the magical "first time" all week... Only, I had very little idea about the pastry sheet. My manager wasn't happy about it and screamed at me up until we were ready to open the door. She was saying stuff like "No, that's not how you line up the scones!!! Do it again! That's not where the cookies go! Check the sheet!" or "Do you see that number here?! What do you think it means??? Well... now UNDERLINE IT!" When she was done with me I was shaking all over and had troble standing (!). When I had to smile cheerfully at our first customers I had to keep myself from crying.

* I should have just quit there and then but no, I had to keep stay for another 4 months of torture... what an idiot.

*Our fat assistant manager liked me at first, then for whatever reason she stopped even greeting me and looking my way.. for months. I still don't know what I've done wrong. After 2 months or so she started acting like she was my best pal, high-fiving me, then she transferred to another store. WTF?

*Apparently I've been fired for "not calling drinks properly". I know I was making mistakes calling drinks in my first weeks, but I know I stopped doing that... but the manager was convinced I still called them wrong. We've only worked together with her once.. on the New Year's Eve! Doesn't everyone make mistakes while calling drinks at first? I've been studying hard the recipes and drink names in my time off. But yeah, once you get labeled, it gets stuck. While the guy who made green tea latte with espresso is still employed!

*I have been told by our manager that I "have no strong suits". That was in my first 2 weeks. How can you say that? Everyone has strong suits.

*The pay was bad, and most of the job wasn't pouring lattes and chatting with customers - it was doing garbage runs in the freezing cold, mopping the floors, scrubbing the toilets, replacing TP and soap, deep cleaning, carrying heavy bags and boxes, and yeah - loading and unloading the stupid sanitizer endlessly!

*I used to come home from work and cry. In my spare time I used to think about all the bad stuff my manager told me, study the manuals, and dread the next day of work.

*To sum up, working at Starbucks was not only bad, it was traumatizing! They should quit lying about "treating partners with dignity and respect". I've been treated like dirt and I'm always nice to everyone! I've a bachelors degree from university... but I guess I'm too stupid to call those drinks properly... It was one of the worst jobs I ever had. The other baristas were actually nice... I hope they all quit and find other jobs!

*So happy I don't have to go there again!!! I hate Starbucks!!!

Thanks for listening!

Maybe I'm just getting old here, but is anyone else beginning to -really- hurt from the new frappuccino process?

The whole, bending aaall the way down to pull a gallon jug of milk out of a fridge that's sitting on the floor, bending all the way back up to pour, bending all the way back down and then up again to put the jug back in the fridge, then all the other crap, including the ridiculous 'binding agent' pumps?

It doesn't seem like it's extra movement than it used to be, but for whatever reason, in all seriousness, it hurts like all get out to keep doing that. I'm talking even worse carpal tunnel than before, all around back and neck, shoulders and SOUL?!1 haha soul. like I still have one after so many years doing this.

So I was glazing over this site called Starbucks Gossip, and they had an interesting question. I thought I would pose it to this group as well:

Which celebrities have you spotted in your Starbucks store?

My store is pretty low-key so I haven't had an celebrity visits. And I'm kind of curious what you all thought of the experiences on this subject. Converse amoungst yourselves :)

So I work in a predominitaly upper-class rich white neighborhood. Most of the people who come in are okay. Not nice but then again not mean. We do however get the rudest people in the world. We had this one lady who would come in with her personal cup with was 20oz. A venti right. Not for her. She always comes in and gets a personal grande Mocha frappachino. So I make her a grande. She then procedes to get **** at me for not filling it up. I made you the grande ****. Thats what you asked for. One day ima go out to her car and dump mocha all over it. Or another time i was ringing and this lady asked for the feta thing. I say the feta wrap. SHe says yeah whatever. I then make her drink and my partner makes her wrap. When i hand her the wrap she says this is not what i wanted. She just sad the feta thing. Turns out she wanted a sasauge piadinni. Really she gets so mad at me she walks me over to the pastry case to show me the sigh cause she is so sure its the flat one. She said she wanted the flat one so she could fit it in her mouth. I beg to differ i bet she could fit that whole wrap in her mouth thats how she got that bmw out side the store.

I've been thinking about Starbucks attitude to us, their loyal minions and I've worked out that the way they handle us actually means they don't really need to do much dirty work, as they have programmed US to do it for them.

What I mean is, we are not employees, we are 'Partners', right?
That means we are supposedly all working together for the good of Starbucks and therefore ourselves, right? Hmmm... Maybe.

The productivity bonuses that are dangled in front of our noses as rewards for hitting targets and impressing mystery shoppers are actually only there to get staff members to whip slow, inexperienced or mediocre (for whatever reason) baristas into shape, without management having to do it and appear tough or unfair.

I worked with a guy who was obsessed with his bonus and would keep his eyes on how other staff members were doing, then take them to one side if he thought they had not performed A1 in any transacton.
'If that had been a mystery shopper, you could have cost me my bonus!' was what I heard him say on more than one occasion, mostly to newbies who were still trying to get their heads around the baffling list of drinks and recipes they were suddenly presented with.

In making all Starbucks staff 'appear' to be a collective working for each other's mutual benefit, the company has actually turned us into pack animals, ready to leap on the weakest member of the pack and rip them, not apart, but at least a 'new one'.

*sigh* I need a new job.

I got fired a week ago, but i feel like a burden was lifted off of me. I hated working there. I got fired because for the past month, SOMETIMES people would get a venti drip and instead of ringing it up, i put it in the tip jar. I prolly put 86$ at most i in the tip jar. A coworker told on me and they took 320$ out of my paycheck then fired me.
I worked there for 4.5 years and never ever had a write up.

I am a manager of a licensed store and feel like nothing I do is ever good enough. I loved it initially, and still love the actual work, but the never-good-enough is truly wearing me down. I thought about maybe applying to a corporate store, but not sure that will be much different. With a seriously successful profit margin as my only claim to fame, will I be able to get a decent paying job outside this company or have you all found that most look at us a just someone who slings coffee for a living? (have been told that a few times)

So A-hole customer comes in in the middle of a rush kinda douc*y and orders a cappuccino. I was on bar so it was on the line. I'm making drinks, thousands of drinks, and he comes to me and says very loudy "I ordered a cappuccino. You guys always put too much foam." Of course I've never seen the d**khead before so I get on my best $h*t eating grin on and say, "I'm sorry sir, you want me to make that over?" He's like "A Cappuccino is mostly milk with a bit of foam, every Starbucks I go to makes it wrong." So of course I break down the difference between a latte and Cappuccino. He goes louder now "NO A LATTE IS MORE FOAM AND A CAPPUCCINO MORE MILK" At this point my regulars are bracing themselves for laughter...they know it's coming. I'm like, (nerdy sarcastic voice) "look SIR, if you wanna go into every Starbucks in the TRI-STATE area and order a cappuccino and get all **** off because everyone keeps messing up your drink that you're ordering incorrectly...fine....it's a free country...people are overseas right now dying for that right for you to do that. But just know you want a LATTE. I think that'll probably fix the problem." He just stares at me, I stare back for like 10 seconds and quietly make his drink. Co-workers and customers are fighting back laughter. He knows it. I start to see him crack. I almost saw steam coming out of his ears. Suppressed rage....my favorite emotional reaction from an a-Hole customer. So, I remake his drink, he snatches off the bar angrily, and I say loudly "YOU'RE WELCOME". People snicker, and the usual what-an-Ahole conversations start up. I just thought I'd share that with you partners in suffering. Hang in there PEOPLE ;-)

have you ever stood up for yourself to a customer?

you know the customer who comes in once in a while, wants their drink to be made with unleaded gold, and then tells you to remake it 100 times, pitches a fit, and when you comply with all of their demands and say "have a nice day!" with a smile they go "pffft!" and storm off? leaving you just wanting to SCREAM? the kind of customer who just CANNOT be satisfied even if you refunded their money, gave them a recovery certificate, handed them a thousand dollars, and massaged their feet?

people are so **** cheap. why can't they just go somewhere less expensive like dunkin donuts or even better, make their coffee at home!!

I honestly DO NOT understand people who come into starbucks to just get regular old coffee and then COMPLAIN about the price! make it yourself then! any idiot can operate a coffee maker. ****, I was doing it when I was 9 years old. you don't HAVE to go to starbucks. jeez!

I hate cheapness. you come to starbucks, you know it's going to be expensive and NO ONE is forcing you to spend your money here.

stop being so cheap. if you want something in your drink you need to pay for it! duh! if you want an extra shot of espresso in your drink, I'm gonna charge you for it. don't try to talk me out of a freaking 50 cents! you sound like a total LOSER

if you don't want to be charged for syrups and soy, register a starbucks card. problem solved. so many *ssholes want to save money but DON'T LISTEN to me when I suggest that maybe they should look into the rewards program and then come in the next day getting their crappy drink and yelling at another cashier for charging them!

cheap customers just p*ss me off and don't **** yell at me when I ring you up! I don't arbitrarily decide the price of your sh*tty latte.

customers who try to get free **** because your drink was made wrong YESTERDAY, **** off.

customers who order a drink one way and then come around to the bar and say "can you add extra espresso? can that be soy instead? can you put a few pumps of vanilla in here?" stop it! if your cup is marked one way, I'll make it that way. if you want more shots, syrup, soy I say "okay that'll be an extra 50 cents, so-and-so can ring you out over there"

I hate hearing "I left my money in my car/house/office! can I pay you back tomorrow?" no! no money, no coffee. every single time I've heard that line, they've never come back to pay the money they owed.I've had a lady actually do that TWICE on me and she always gets a really expensive latte with soy and extra shots. no more godd*mn handouts!!

75 cents short? keep your filthy hands out of the tip jar!!! I don't care if you're the president! that money isn't yours! I once had a middle aged woman fishing quarters out of the tip jar for parking meters and NOT putting in dollars in exchange. just TOOK them. I must have missed the sign that said "free money"

I hate when customers say they want a refund because they "didn't like" their pastry. you bought it, you took a bite, it's now unsellable. we can't even give it to the homeless shelter and YOU want your MONEY back?! honestly the things people do at starbucks I would have never DREAMED of doing before I started working there. if I didn't like a crappy pastry I would just throw it out or ask someone if they wanted it. not hand the filthy half-eaten thing to some poor starbucks slave demanding my 2 dollars back.

if these people seriously can't spare 50 cents or eat the cost of a nasty pastry, why do they even come to starbucks? there are better ways to save money without making yourself sound like a total brat.

I travel around to a number of Starbucks and use a Gold Card. I had the old black gold card and was transferred to the new one. I occasionally get a little syrup in brewed coffee. Some places charge me for the syrup, some don't; both say they are doing the right thing. Is syrup an extra charge with a Gold Card?

Thanks!

Okay when I pre close I do everything. Sweep, mop sometimes twice, sanitize and date everything, clean the bar. Whenever I close and this one semi new barista pre closes he does hardly anything and yet when I come in for my closing shift, he always waves a hand at the cold bar and says "I did everything for you today".

I've only been here a couple months and I have got the hang of it~ he's been here over a month now and still struggles severely with the drinks and doesn't clean.

So I come in for a closing shift today and he hasn't swept or mopped, and though he said that he did everything...the pumps look dirty and none have dates on them. UGH. Then he goes out to the lobby to talk with his preppy girlfriends. While I refill everything that's empty. And sweep and mop the filthy store and wash the mats. Okay usually I don't complain, but dam*n I was complaining today to my shift! I feel bad; I hope he didn't hear...when he was out in the lobby I was really complaining to her because this is like the third time he's done this and just left everything for me to do for pre closing while he flirts with his friends.

Okay normally I wouldnt care so much BUT GUESS WHAT. He usually gets like 30 hours a week! More than most of the shifts! He barely knows how to make drinks (put a pitcher into the blender without the top today, I had to clean up the mess and sanitize the whole blender) and I have to guide him through everything, and he doesn't know how to clean!

Also he kept throwing the milk cartons into the trash and I was like, hey just throw them into the recylcing. I dont know if heard me but literally 1 minute after I said that, he tosses another empty milk carton (he'd been filling up the lobby pitchers) in the trash. uhm okay..

I feel embarrassed i was complaining so much to my shift...hopefully he didnt hear while he was planning his new york trip with his white girlfriends..erm okay.

But dont you just hate baristas who even after more than a month on the job, act like they dont know how to do ANYTHING? And make your shift harder? At my store its the pre closers job to sweep and mop and sanitize and date everything. I'm tired of this idiot. Cant understand why he gets mad hours.

thoughts?

When she decided to work at Starbucks, I thought, hey free coffee! But the store manager is a pervert and he decided to hit on her despite knowing that she was going out with me. He continued to poison her mind everyday and telling her to break up with me.

Behind my back, they went for dinner and movie dates. One day, I knew she was out with him and I called her on the phone. I demanded to speak to him and his balls shrank and didn't have the guts to even speak to me on the phone. A few more times they went out and she lied to me that she was alone.

I broke up with that **** and wanted to set the store on fire. But i decided not to take revenge because I didn't want to live a life of revenge and bitterness. I **** hate Starbucks.

1. We got this dude who comes in nearly everyday. He's an older, Iranian or Turkish man. Something like that. He acts like he lives at the store. He buys his little coffee and just sleeps and sleeps for hours in the couches. Then the other day, he asks to borrow our phone. Okay fine. Give it to the guy. A rush comes in and we totally forget about him for an hour or so. UNTIL, the phone starts ringing and he ANSWERS IT!!! He walks up to our shift and says "A lady wants to ask you a question" OMFG. We put the phone down on the counter near the register. He wants to use it again and he just reaches over and grabs the phone! My shift took it from him and was like "What's wrong with you?!"

2. The dorky, pudgy lady who is sort of regular comes in and lately whenever she asks for a spinach feta wrap, we are out. Well, she comes in the other day, asks about the wrap and we're out. It's like 3 o'clock every time she comes in so wtf does she expect. WELL, she went insane! Like, seriously bizerk. She was screaming and carrying on about how she has to take care of her sick father or some BS and was just having a fit screaming at us. She called are DM. Our shift tells her than she can't act like that and tells her to leave. Then, she comes in the next day and acts like nothing happened. WTF!

3. This hippo comes in, asks for an Iced Venti CM. She clearly has no idea what that was because once we hand it off to her she returns it and says it has too much milk. So we're like okay how about another shot of espresso? We give it to her. Still not happy. So she doesn't want extra ice and less milk or more shots. She asks the barista to some how magically bend the laws of science and pour out the shots that are on top of the milk into one cup and the milk into another. ARE YOU SERIOUS? And the whole time she was rolling her eyes and sighing like "OMIGAWD are you stooopid?"

What is the deal with people?

Remember when the one annoying kid in your class would do something, and everyone else would get extra homework for it? Well, this applies to me giving people decaf. I've been developing a certain criteria, and everytime anything on this list happens, I decaf. I don't care whether you're a nice person or if I even like you, if you automatically do any one thing on this list you're getting decaf. So let's begin.

Before I start though, I just want to say that I used to feel bad charging people for extra caramel, for extra shots, etc. But, lately I've just become more and more **** off at our customers in general, that I don't care anymore. In fact I enjoy it. I make their drinks perfect, I smile and say thanks and all that, and then they leave my cafe a mess. They stick gum on the windows, they spill drinks, they don't clean up after themselves at ALL, and they're quite rude alot of the time. So, I stopped caring, and you can only blame yourselves, horrible people of Starbucks.

- If you ask me to put splenda, or any type of sugar packets in your drink. DECAF.
- If you ask me to remake a drink for any reason whatsoever. DECAF.
- If you ask me for extra something, or an extra pastry after I've already finished ringing you up. DECAF.
- If I say "Hi." And I don't get a response back, and not even a glance, and they just start with their order. DECAF.
- If they change their cup size. I want a tall, no wait a grande! After I mark their cup, and especially after they've been standing in like for 5 minutes. DECAF.
- If they throw their money at me, or pay with a ton of change. DECAF.

These are off the top of my head, but I can't think of anymore. If you'd like to add, feel free. So lesson be learned, treat the people that make your food with respect or you're going to have quite a crappy cup of coffee.

About 5 months ago, An already lazy shift supervisor at my store decided to go out and get hammered and come into work open the store and go in the back and fall asleep on the back desk. I wasn't there but even with 10 incident reports and the store manager walking in and smelling the alcohol on her breath, she still has a job. So 3 weeks ago the same thing happened. I was the 3rd person in and there was only one barista on the floor and I came in and had to run the shift. I am capable, but it is like a slap in the face to the entire company why she still has a job. For 4 hours. and the next day she did tips and got paid for every second she was there. I called the Manager but he didnt answer. and the funniest thing is she didnt even acknowledge she was wrong. Even if she said sorry, or she screwed up. she just went on as if nothing happened at all. I dunno why she still has job. i hate starbucks.

Supposedly it is going to take several days to fix. Which means gift cards and credit cards don't work; no expiditer screen or suspending orders for dt and no cup labels. This should be an interesting few days. Not to mention very few people at my store know how to mark cups. I can't wait for the morning rush.

so these two douches come into the store, well, I should back up first. I see a shiny new Audi drive up, park, and see the two exit the vehicle umbrellas in tow (as it was raining at the time), shake the water off and enter the building iced grande tumblers in hand and proceed to waltz right up to the counter and demand their refill. Lolz I had too much fun today. So I heard the customary, "well you dont demand this on your website" or the ever popular, "every other starbucks does this for me!!!!!!!@1!" but my personal quote of the day was, "Excuse me, i'm not sure you were aware but you do realize we're GOLD CARD MEMBERS?" Yes sir and by that fancy personalized gold card with your name on it I can specifically tell you, Edgar Kerchief, that you'll be recieveing 10 cents off the price of your purchase before you storm off in disgust...

So I worked a mean shift yesterday to cover someone else's butt. Open to mid, took an hour nap, then closed. Shouldn't have worked out that way, but hey, what do you expect from our company.

An older gentleman was excessively rude to me near the end of the night, and this is after nearly 16 hours of making caramel frappucinos for ..the kinds of customers that order them (see: rotten kids, dudebros, fauxhawks, geriatrics, so on). He was mostly frustrated because he didn't understand the sizes, which is a common thing. After he began condescendingly asking if I could understand the simplest of orders, if I knew how to do my job, and so on, I lost my cool.

Looked him straight in the eye and said, 'Sir .. I've been with this company for over three years. I went to school to become an English teacher. I make ninety-three cents above minimum wage. And I've been in this very spot since 4:45am.'

His face went blank, then he said, '****, I'm sorry, son.' Complete 180, and even tipped us ten bucks when he left.

Uncle Howie probably wants a cut of that scratch.

... is nasty. Sorry, but it really is. I don't taste any difference between VIA and Nescafe. What was Starbucks thinking, that this product will save the company. Is there really that big of a demand for instant coffee out there that I didn't know about?

Tell me why I should care about selling this ****, when we are short a person (or 2-3) almost every day, we're always running out of something, and when there are lines a mile long out the door....??

If I have to hear the entirety of every reggae mix one more time I think I may have to smash the XM player with my face.

While I understand The Bux's corporate apes pick the music under the guise of being non-offensive or otherwise white noise, there's one thing I'm glad for: every so often, a gem pops up in one of their mixes. See: Bright Eyes, the Postal Service, the National, the Old 97's, the Silversun Pickups. Some more that I can't remember.

I actually love when 'Lazy Eye' by the Silversun Pickups pops up on the player, and the old people zombie-shambling around our cafe look upset in addition to bewildered.

It makes me miss the olden days of when, at other places of employment, we had a big ole disc changer in the office, and as employees we could all bring in our own music and slap that bad boy on shuffle (and occassionally covertly dispose of people's bad mixes).
