So I'm part of 1 of 2 districts that are running a "test" before this is rolled out. We had the district meeting about it today. The bottom line is that the bux is doing a bit of management restructuring and eventually the positions of shift supervisor and assistant store manager will no longer exist.

These jobs are being hybridized into "team leads". They're going to have a short transitional position of "manager-in-training" for people that are about ready to get their own stores, but other than that, team leads and store managers are going to be it.

Yes, the bennies get better than what shifts currently have (although not really less, as I gather, for ASM's). They're bringing personal days back and adding up to I think 3 extra weeks of paid vacation depending on how long you've been working for the company if you become a team lead. Authority for shifts will increase, up to and including interviewing, scheduling, punch editing, coaching, etc.. For the rest of us peons it means more tips, because team leaders will officially be part of management and no longer receive tips. That's the super-short version of a long, rather boring meeting that had little relevance to me as I've only been working here two months and I have no intention of vying for this position at this point.

But FYI for everyone else.

So here's the thing. I am a newer partner, since Jan, and I am part-time. What are the policies your stores have on time off and scheduling?

As of recently, my manager posted a note saying we cannot ask off for the next four months. Pretty sure when I was hired the standard was that you could ask off a month in advanced and it should be okay, and I understand other people beat me to the punch. But what the heck am I supposed to do? I work another full time job in the summer, and basically explained to my boss that I will not be needing hours. This is fine apparently, but I have worked Fri, Sat, Sun for the last three weekends. How is that fair when I am part-time. And who in the world plans their lives four months in advanced?

If I had been forewarned that you would have to ask off that far in advanced I would have made more of an effort, but how is it okay to block of a quarter of a year? Starbucks isn't my life, it's simply a part-time job, but it's greatly affecting my life.

I work at The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. I was a barrista before that. Unfortunately I have found that the terror that is the sbux customer spans well beyond the franchise. At least once a week I will have a conversation that goes something like this:
Customer: "Where's the nearest Starbucks?"
Me: "Across the highway inside the Barns & Noble."
C: "Oh... well do you make coffee here?"
Me: "Yep, our menu is right here on the wall."
C: "Can you make me a frappucino?"
Me: "Nope, that's a Starbucks trademark. I'd be happy to make you a blended frappe from our menu though."
C: "Well, can you make me a Green Tea Lemonaid then."
Me: "Nope, that's not on the menu and I don't have the ingredients for it. I do have regular lemonaid."
C: "OMGWTF IS WRONG WITH THIS PLACE? FINE! I'll have a caramel macchiato."
Me: "... No."

I really don't know what it is about candy stores that screams "OMGSTARBUCKS" to some people.

Hello every one. Im going on 7 years with Starbucks. Going on 1 year as a store manager. In this year Ive gotten two ecosure visits. The first one was a 90.5 and my recent one was a 82.4 . As many of you all may know, ecosure is a big thing in the company!

My question is , is there a secret way to find out what dates ecosure is scheduled to visit your store? I know the answer is probably no! but its worth a try.

You know, this job sucks... often I've had a hard day. Things can be very difficult. They aren't easy, to put it politely. Strenuous. Trying. Challenging. I might even say that this job is very HARD--ON me.

By that I don't mean "erection", despite it being both HARD... and sometimes ON me. I just mean simply... that it is **** me. But I keep getting censored lol.

So... to fight the powers that be, I will now be using the word "erection" in place of "****". Because at the end of the day, when I come here to vent about my troubles, about the trials that have belabored me, it is hard enough on me without having to dig through my vocabulary to find a suitable replacement to describe how hard... on me the work has been.

Yesterday, in fact, was enormously erection on me.

So in the middle of our last happy hour this past Sunday a guy orders a French press of willow. Never mind the fact that we had some brewed already. He HAD to have a fresh pressed cup of coffee. There were at least 20 people behind him in line and there were only 3 partners on the floor. Btw, sbux does not charge enough for French pressed coffee. He got his coffee and ended up drinking only about a grande cup of it. The rest went down the drain. At least he tipped 25 cents.

I visited a coffeehouse recently where rather than give out water upon request, they have a 3 gallon bottle of ice water with a stack of cups next to it so customers desiring water can help themselves.

I was wondering if doing something like this at sbux would be a good idea? Surely it's been thought of by the powers that be.

So I had an opening shift today and I was excited because I was with all of my favorite partners. We were abnormally busy today, but it helped the day go by faster... however, there's always that d-bag who tries to ruin your day. For me, this came in the form of two different customers.

The first annoyed me due to the principle of the matter. She ordered a grande iced chai tea latte with - get this - ONLY 5 ice cubes. She was quite adamant about there being ONLY 5. Just because she was such a rhymes-with-witch I put six ice cubes. Now, I understand that she has probably received drinks in the past that had too much ice. But being so freakishly insistent on the 5 ice cubes... that's a bit much.

And then... there was a lady who ordered a grande white mocha frappuchino. There were three hot drinks in front of hers that I was working on (I prefer to use both bar machines when I'm barring. It helps increase my speeds). Now, I DEPLORE being on cold bar. And I especially hate having to go back and forth. The other partner I was with at the time knew this so she went ahead and started the drink for me (everything but ice and blending it) since we had no customers in line at the POS. I was finishing off the grande latte (2 drinks ahead of the WMF), when she looks at me and says "Excuse me. Are you going to give me my drink any time soon?"

Now, it's no secret that I have very little patience with rude customers. I haven't mastered the "Kill 'em with kindness" thing yet. I looked at her and said "When I finish the drinks ahead of yours, I'd be glad to." I call out the latte and begin the hot chocolate (which is for one of my absolute favorite regulars) when she says "Umm... that latte was for that girl over there, not for me. When am I getting my drink?" I replied "You'll get your drink when I get to it. There are other customers here other than you." (Granted, I know that this is probably not the response Starbucks would have wanted me to use). I finish off the hot chocolate and give it to my customer and he uses a reference to an inside joke and we both laugh. This infuriates the woman who says "EXCUSE ME! I'VE BEEN WAITING!" I sort of lost it at this point. I looked at her and said, "I know you have. You haven't let me forget that you're waiting. Now that those drinks are done, I'll make yours."

I added ice, blended it, and put it in her cup. Before I gave it to her, I made a point of starting the next drink in line (because I'm passive-aggressive like that) and then said, "Your patience was greatly appreciated. Have a nice day." with the most sarcastic manner I could do when I sent it out. UGH! In what universe do you not have food-service operate in a first-come, first-sever manner?!

1.77. Just barely meets expectations.

So I was kinda upset with it til I found out I got the 3rd highest review in the store. I found out nobody got a 3 on anything.

I got all 2s except two 1s.
I got a 1 on Green Apron cards...which is bs since my store doesn't do those, and my manager gives everyone a 1 since he's too lazy to make the effort to do that program. I didn't even know what it was until about 2 weeks ago.

The other 1 I got was because one time I was working on the floor with my manager and I was making a WM for my bf's mom. I stuck the spoon in it and stirred it because I know she likes it when I make it as opposed to other people and that's what I usually do when I don't get a chance to swirl the shots in. And apparently that's not the "better beverage way" so of course, big fat 1 for me!

It just sucks because that was one time...it was like 2 months ago. I rarely work with him. I'm fairly fast on bar but he only saw that one time when we were super slow in the evening. Today he said "stirring every drink will make you a lot slower on bar." W T F one freakin time and he puts it in his brain that that's how I do things. Ughhhh

And don't even know what they're really getting. Do you guys have any of them?

I have a lady who's convinced that her hot, nonfat white chocolate mocha is also also sugar free and the whipped cream is sugar free and fat free too.

The first few times she came in she said "they know what I get" and basically dismissed me as unworthy of taking her order. Now that I have secured my register dominance, she has since decided to slowly enunciate her exact order, which confused me since it doesn't exist.
"I'll have a venti... hot.... mocha....white chocolate....skinny....sugar free white chocolate..... nonfat milk...... non fat whipped cream...... everything sugar free and fat free.... and DECAF!"
She says all this while flinging her HUGE purse on my counter and knocking off a few pounds of coffee and my tip jar label. Never apologizes.

You're lucky I'm not on bar or you'd be getting a breve mocha.

So I was certified as a barista trainer a few months ago. This week I have been "training" a new employee. I have not once been allowed the time to sit down with my trainee and go over the material or work specifically with her one on one at each task without interference. Actually, I have been scheduled a regular shift, and I am expected to work as I normally would--making drinks for customers, take orders, stock my area, etc--and at the same time train the new girl. So basically I am doing twice as much work. Mostly we are reverting to the old way of training where she shadows me and then I stand over her shoulder and watch her make the drinks then give her pointers. Then people freak out when there is a line because the girl who is making drinks isn't fast enough. (Oh well I don't know, maybe it's because she has been working for only 3 days now!) The only thing we have worked on together is hot bar and cold bar. Someone else "taught" her (ie showed her a few things then left her on her own) how to brew coffee and work POS even though I'm supposed to be her only trainer.

My question to other certified barista trainers is, am I supposed to be allotted extra time to actually train the person? Shouldn't some one else be covering hot bar while I am actually allowed time to explain things and have her practice without all the pressure? Also am I supposed to get paid any extra? So far I have not been given a raise even though I'm doing twice the work.

This all just seems like another shady way my managers are trying to get the employees to do more work without more pay.

OK so here's the deal, I've been at Starbucks about 6 weeks now. And about a week ago we had a 'snapshot' and lets just say we didn't do so well, well I say we, I really meant I didn't do so well, because I was the one serving on the till. So apparently we got a bad mark because my customer service was not that good. That day particularly was not a good day, you know everyone has their bad days, but the thing is I really don't recall being rude to any customers, come to think about it I wasn't at all rude to anyone. Coming away from this, I came to Starbucks from working at a Nightclub and a not so well known hotel, so my customer service had never gone beyond, please, thanks you, have a nice day. I have never been required to talk to customers about their day, their cat, their new clothes, whatever they wanted to blab about. So back to the 'snapshot' I apparently seemed rushed, that I did not make any conversation and that I made them feel like a pest. At the same time I had one of the supervisors giving me orders and time limits and that I MUST meet those time limits, they then would wonder off somewhere and leave me at the till. So me being me I panicked and thought oh my god if I don't complete these tasks he's going to think I'm not able to do simple tasks.

At this point a line was building so I wasn't able to do all the tasks at the time given (even though I tried)..So now this has resulted in me rushing the queue down and trying to juggle the tasks and customers orders, and seemingly not being as friendly as we I could have, resulting in the bad snap shot. (the snapshot person really went to town with the complaining)

Another thing which really annoyed me was, the two other employees working with me (including the supervisor) had 2 breaks each, I hadn't had one and I had been working for 5 and a half hours (through dinner) and had 4 more hours to go. so I was not in the greatest of moods.

When the results came in, I got a MASSIVE grilling in the office about how un-acceptable it was, I was shown the footage on the CCTV and you could tell I was ****** off to the high heavens about being bossed around and left to handle the line, the customers orders and the jobs given (all within a time limit)so anyway I've been given a disciplinary and it is now going to be 'investigated' (not to mention I was not the only reason for the bad mark, dirty toilets, outside area, and the drinks not being made right) were all other reasons, but it seed I was getting the blame. The manager then said "so what do you want to do now" implying do I want to quit, and then continued on to saying "just to let you know I've had people leave because of stuff like this" I don't know if she was hinting but I just said I was going to learn from my mistakes and do better.

So then we had a meeting, which was pretty much slating me, but you know the "naming no names" game. The manager read out the snap shot to everyone there, and not everyone knew it was all my fault but the ones who did, looked at me and said stuff like "who ever this was should be sacked" one employee even asked who it was and the manager said I will tell you later. It was like ****, and I felt like no one liked me at all, I've been there 6 weeks! I'm not perfect and the manager kept saying "oh well look at (Barista 1)who had been there 5 years! I've been there 6 weeks and I am being compared to people who have been there years. What is wrong with some people...

Next day I go in with my friend for a coffee, and ask for the newest drink, one of the supervisors came storming out like "you can't have one unless you have a Starbucks card" and obviously I don't have one yet. So I then got my friend to buy me one on her Starbucks card and then the supervisor goes "NO! you cant buy one if it is not your card, you cant drink it" she was being an utter **** and I really don't know what her problem is. So anyway me and my friend went out and I drank the drink anyway, I said bye, waved with a smile and of course I pretty much got ignored. What the **** is her problem?

So anyway I'm really worried encase I get sacked, I don't want to loose my job at all, and do genuinely want to improve and I am willing to improve, I even started crying when I was in the office because I did SO bad according to that stupid snapshot person.

Oh and by the way, the snapshot before that was really really high, and I was on that snapshot, but, of course no praise was given and that snapshot was when I had been there 2 weeks.

Hi-

Before I worked for Starbucks, my only experience was going to Starbucks on a lazy afternoon, relaxing and having a beverage of some sort. I know they want to think that Starbucks is a person's third place, but seriously, it has turned in to a fast food joint. People complain that we're not real baristas because we don't hand make the espresso, but the customers demand speed. Many of my customers can't wait the 1 minute left while we re-brew Pike or the daily dark roast. One minute - they can't wait.

I think there's a disconnect between quality and speed.

Just my $.02.

The new channel is #ihatesbux. I'm going to replace the link in the old thread as well as keep this one up for awhile.

I figured we could have some fun with this. Use this thread to describe all of you unsavory customer encounters and how you decided to penalize them.

I'll start. Today, at about 9:15am, this whole family came into my store, and proceeded to order 6 or 7 excessively modified drinks. An older lady belonging to the group ordered a quad venti toffee nut soy extra hot no foam latte. Register partner subsequently explained that soy tends to develop foam after settling and it's next to impossible to avoid that. The lady began to rudely berate register partner by saying "why is it always so difficult for you people to get my drink right" etc. etc. Needless to say, all four of her espresso shots and those of her group were decaf. Guilt by association ftw.

A lobby store in my district is turning into a drive thru and I would love to transfer to it. It's closer to my house and I'm so sick of my stores BS. I know a shift at the store who told me that they're hiring like 10 more baristas so I told her to tell her manager that I'd be willing to transfer. The problem is, I don't know if my current manager will allow me to go. Can she deny my transfer request? I've been with Starbucks for 2 years. I'm worried that if she finds out I'm looking to transfer that she can deny the request and then retaliate, which she would. The store opens in August so I'm starting to get the ball rolling now so I can get in.

Okay, so i have this co worker that is starting to **** me off like NON OTHER. He thinks he is so much better than everyone else because he's been a shift for four years. and obviously, hes better at the job than people who've only been with the company for 6 or 9 months (me & most of my other co workers)which he obviously SHOULD be. Since he's been working there for four years! and he thinks he's the best, but he so clearly isn't. he forgets to do stuff ALL the time when he closes (he's a closing shift) leaves things unstocked, uncleaned, and doesn't even do his weekly tasks. he misses mandatory meetings as well. Lately he's been being a total **** to baristas on the floor. For some reason he's got it in his head that I'm a bad barista and always calls me out. For no freaking reason. If one thing goes wrong, it's my fault. For example, a customer didn't hear me calling their drink out and was like "oh heres my drink!" and not even angry about not hearing the call right away, but my shift was all like oh well if you were a GOOD barista that wouldn't have happened. it's like what the ****? shut up ****. he also looks at other partners like they are idiots all the time. in front of customers.. and the customers notice. i want to tell him how much of a dbag he comes off as. oh and if someone is on bar and they aren't doing everything "perfectly" or super quick he says "okay, i need you to get out of here" and takes over. he's done this only once to me, but a handful of times to my other co worker. he's such a stupid piece of work. it's like, come off your high horse buddy.
thank god i barely work with him anymore. he's a closer and i've started working mainly only 7am-1pm shifts.

I started working at Starbucks in December. Signed up for the Marines in early march. My ship date isn't until June 4th, so I told my SM that I'd stay until sometime in may. On April 23rd I put in my 2 weeks, or I should say tried to put in my 2 weeks. SM glares at me and was like "I thought you were staying through may". I explain that my ship date is early in June and I'd would like a few weeks to relax and spend time with friends and family before I leave. On top of that, Starbucks is a secondary job, and having just moved back into my parents and paid off the last of my outstanding bills...I didn't need a second job. Being the nice guy that I am, I offer to stay for 3 weeks.

Fast forward to early what should be my last week there. I look at the schedule and it has "2 weeks" written on it next to my name. I bring it up to my SM and he's like "well..I thought we decided on the 20th. I tell him that the 20th was a number he threw out at the end of the conversation, but that I clearly said that I wanted to put in my TWO weeks, but would stay for THREE to be nice, and that I would like to just be done at the end of the week (may 13th). He has the nerve to first try to get me to just work those shifts, and the tell me that I'm responsible for those shifts that he mistakenly gave me, and that I need to get people to cover me! WTF?? You'd think he would be a little bit understanding seeing as I'm leaving for 13 weeks of marine corps boot camp. Do I need to be worried about being listed as "terminated" because of this?

So, we were having a discussion about whether or not customers who get no water (and/or no ice) iced teas should get charged double, since they are essentially getting double the product. we have a lady who requests a venti cup of ice on the side with her trenta no water no ice iced tea that prompted this discussion. what do you guys do in your stores? and if you believe we should charge extra for these kinds of drinks, why don't we charge extra for no water chai lattes?

I was written up today for something that was not only completely an totally out of my hands, but it's something I've seen every other cash controller do INCLUDING my SM herself. I didn't sign the paper and plan on talking to her about it but I need to know the best way to go about doing this.

At my store we get the same people coming in everyday, at the same time, getting the same order. Like one woman, her child and husband..she orders a green tea, and two waters. the kid and husband eventually leave, but she sits there for hours all day, getting refills. She isnt even using the free wi-fi! Another creepy chick, looks like Barbie, also needs her vente green iced tea and trente ice water, twice a day. This is not the AM coffee crowd, it is the OCD crowd. The list goes on, including the stoned woman who hits the drivethru everynight...literally.
