Does anyone know if this is even legal? I'm hoping the answer is no so I can tell this customer NO....she doesn't come in too often but when she does I have to pull out the first aid anti-burn creme. And she gets TWO ventis! WITH NO FOAM. :/

if they want nasty scorched milk,...more power to them

Why?? There's no way anyone could drink it that hot unless the inside of their mouth is made of steel. Idiots.

Of course you can say no. I can't believe you haven't been!
If anyone (customer or boss) tells you to do a task you feel is unsafe, you can refuse with no consequences (unless you sign a contract which clearly states that you're obligated to perform said unsafe task, but that's a different story.)
All you can say is "I'm sorry but the temperature you want is very unsafe for me to produce. But I'll be glad to offer you up to 185 degrees :). May I also suggest an Americano, those come at 200F"
212 is boiling point. Is she just out to torment you guys?

My guess is she doesn't even know what she's asking for. It is IMPOSSIBLE to make a 220 degree drink. Read:
http://van.physics.illinois.edu/qa/listing.php?id=1799What she really meant to say was "I want an extra hot drink that will burn my tongue and/or make it home without getting cold"

I will do 200 but I know how to do it without burning myself. I absolutely refuse to steam it any hotter than that. We only have one person who regularly asks for 200, and we have one person who comes in once in forever who asks for 190, aside from that all of our extra hot people are fine with 180, which is what I usually do for extra hot. When I do 200, the trick to keep from burning myself is to keep pouring a little out as it tries to steam over the sides as it gets really really hot and near boiling point. I am sure it tastes like **** being so **** burnt, but I have actually seen this lady sip her lava mocha right after it is made so I am pretty sure her taste buds have been completely destroyed at this point anyway. Some customer asked me today if it was true that if milk went above 170 it tastes different. I told her yes, that doing that burned the milk and made it taste awful, and that people who requested it usually wanted it to be warm when they got home, but they didn't notice the awful taste (and that's why they still order it anyway) because they take sips on their way home, so it burns their taste buds and they don't notice the bad taste anymore. She seemed satisfied and went on her way. I don't think she will ever order extra hot, lol. Anyway, if that lady comes in, tell her no **** way. I shouldn't even be doing any higher than 180, but I certainly wouldn't do anything past 200. Tell her no, if she makes a fuss then make her drink 200 degrees and tell her it's 220 (just like I know some people will give the 200 degree chick 180 and tell her it's 200) they will not notice the damn difference, their taste buds are shot anyway. If they do, tell them you won't do it because it's not safe.

I got yelled at by a customer for requesting a 220 degree drink, and i said it was dangerous. He said he didnt care he wanted it that way so i have to make it. Well i made the drink and put a towel near me and under the bar for the mess it was going to make. I kept pressing auto steam after it reached 190 once it reached 210 the smell of burnt milk started and customers started complaining about the smell. But me as a great employee i made it pass 220 so i kept pressing auto steam until i made a huge mess for me to clean. at the end he got more foam than a dry capuccino.

The manual says you can't steam past 190. I looked the other day for the same reason. Maybe you can keep the manual on hand, and show it to them. Then you can offer them to come steam the milk themselves, so they can burn themselves and clean up the mess afterwards. Sounds fair to me! If a SS or SM tells you to do it, tell them you don't feel comfortable/always burn yourself/ think they can do it better and let them risk their top layer of skin!

The manual says we can't steam past 190 because it puts the barista in harm's way.
This is an area where we can 'just say no.' Why? "Would you like to pay for my visit to the hospital this evening after making your beverage?"
I've seen partners burned from this **** and out for two weeks first hand.

In California it's illegal to go past 190 degrees. Health code violation. It's very dangerous to make and drink.

Just say yes and make it to 180* dumb customers cant even tell the difference.

^ Yeah, most of these morons can't even tell the difference between our coffees, so I seriously doubt they can get an accurate read on the temperature of what they're drinking. Same goes for people who ask for like 5 and 1/2 Splenda - they get 5 godd@mn Splenda, okay, and are never the wiser.

Look at all of you. If some shady guys walked into your store to rob it, you wouldn't realize it until they stuck a gun in your face.
The only reason this thread got pushed to the front page was because a spambot posted some advertisement. The original posters in this thread are long gone, their voices only echoes.
