Having always asked for and received a cup of water at most of the Starbucks in the city I was a little bit miffed to discover that the Harlem store has a different policy. Can anyone explain to me why the lighter stores give water and the darker stores can't? This is very disturbing to me. In fact its enough to send me back to Dunkin Donuts. I've already written corporate but the fact remains that in New York City the rules for receiving a cup of water are different as soon as you enter Harlem. Is it me or is it them?

Did they flat refuse or did they try to charge you for their cost( cup, lid, straw)? Most stores will give you a cup of water even though you may be the 300th request of the day but I have heard of some charging and others limiting the size to help control costs. I REALLY doubt that skin color had anything to do with it.

I SO wish people had to pay for a cup of water or that I could flat out refuse. We spend so much time giving away free cups of water that we can't even help the paying customers! And it isn't even hot out, yet! What is wrong with buying a bottle, cheap bastards?

Dittos to the cheap bastards; what do they think, you're their Mommy?
If they want free water, tell them that there is a urinal full of it, first door on the right!

i think there's some sort of law that says you can't refuse someone tap water. what annoys me though is that the water people always push in when you're just serving someone else at the till and then they never even drink it. when i go on a bus later i always pick up dozens of full water cups.

We give out water in our district, but when I went to D.C. last year I encountered a store that did it a different way; they set out a pitcher of cold (but not iced) water and some iced tall cups, no lid and no straw, and that was it. I like that method; customers can get a drink, it's still our filtered water, and we don't have to run around assembling ice waters for them. It's win-win.
Of course, our DM thinks we should bend over backwards to satisfy everyone's needs, no matter how demanding, so I'm sure we'd never get away with that. It IS a waste of cups, though, especially since everyone wants a venti or a grande.
Can you charge someone for a cup? I don't think so.
Also - don't be a racist ****. Maybe the DM in Harlem gives out different guidelines to partners.

The whole pitcher full of water on the counter is less annoying, but you don't get credit or labor for it. Ringing in every cup of water ordered...and, yes, there is a button on the POS, means cups and lids and straws are accounted for(not missing/variance) and you earn labor, just like for any other drink. So, if I have to choose the lesser of two evils, I choose the one that gives us labor, however little.

We have those nasty little 250ml plain plastic glasses and they are the only ones we are allowed to give out with water in it, the branded cups only get branded drinks in them :)

ilovesbux, just very recently the systems haven't allowed you to ring in cups of water, it says something along the lines of, "You can't ring a free modifier without a beverage"

In that case, just add the cup o water to the next paying customers order... it will not add to their total... and I think it will still give you the labor...
Btw, does anyone know how much labor hitting the double blended modifier gives you?

All the stores used to have a tureen of water with small water cups on the condiment bar for customers but someone tampered with the water in one store and corp. made all the stores get rid of the containers. I've known a couple stores who used the pitchers and got away with it for a while.

you should only be allowed a free cup of water if you are a paying customer. i would never go into a store an just ask for something for free with out purchasing another item. i would feel like a scum bag.
there is a button on the register: "Cup O Water". it rings up for no purchase. but it gets counted as labor. if it's a hot day and/or a more than usual amount of people are asking for free cups of water, you should use that button on the register. don't get your labor hours screwed over.

Yea I give water out whenever for free. I don't bother with the POS because a) it's a huge waste of time and b) I ring up people for every single modifier otherwise so I don't think I'm missing out on labor.
But...are you seriously suggesting this has something to do with race? Jesus!

Some people are raised to see race issues in everything. What a pathetic way to live.

omg you got me started on this one
" you can have any size ice cup for 54 cents or the short cup for free"
is what i say
i ring it as a coffee refill and ring about 5 cup o waters at the end of the day
pisses me off when people jump the line in a rush come to me at the bar where im in the weeds and ask for water like i give a ****! then they get thier panties in a wad when i say you have to get in the line.....and then get even more irate when they get the short cup! especially when they stink to high heaven!
o and the people who ask for cups of hot water for thie teabags or cup of soup? and dont even tip? WTF!
agree w/ coffeeasswipe! im not thier mommy!
o and let me mention that in addition to charging for water bathrooms are locked and for customers only, no exceptions! so we have to deal with that too....
im a pregnant single mom with two kids, and two dogs at home, my day is way too devoted to cups of water and bodily fluids! ill be damned if i have to deal with it at work too..... grrr
why dont you go choke on your damn letters to corporate pheorama?!

OMG I hate when people want a cup of hot water with the sleeve and lid. Most of them even say "I brought my own tea.." I'm going to suggest the pitcher-of-water thing when I go back in because we have a lot of "water regulars" that come by regularly, multiple times a day, and just get water.

I used to work in a mall store, and the "kiosk girls" - if that makes sense - would come in constantly for venti iced waters and, occasionally, a pastry. A few of them were really sweet, and waited in line just like everyone else, and they never bothered me. But one **** used to wait at the hand-off plane and accost us - during rushes - demanding a water, or a water refill. "Ummmm, excuuuuse me - can you hurry? I have to get back to work."
Urg.
