Do you guys use a base or espresso in it? It has this gelatinous look to it, just wondering....
What is in a frappuccino?

We mix a packet of instant coffee with water, then ad a box of frappucino mix, which I'm assuming has milk and an emulsifier/thickener. And probably some sugar too.

The base has a list of ingredients about 30 items long mostly E codes, but yes colouring, thickening, preservatives and everyone's favourite sweetner high fructose corn syrup which is first or second on the list. Then add instant coffee. The cream base is a little better being more milk but still has a long ingredients list which is generally a bad sign!

Yikes! We use vanilla or chocolate ice cream and espresso for our drinks, comes out really good.

Im old school so about 9yrs ago starbucks did not have the instant coffee packets. We would brew italian roast full batch on a half batch setting so it was extra strong then we would put it in the fridge to cool. That is actually why they stopped using fresh brewed coffee and went to instant. Too many people were not letting the coffee fully cool down before adding the frappuccino box milk concoction. So the milk would get currdled as soon as it hit the coffee. MMMM... you want chuncks with that frappuccino?

Milkyway- do you have a recipe? That sounds really good, way better than a frap. Is it just a milk shake with espresso?

Buying the little glass bottles of Frappuccinos [sold in delis and supermarkets] and blending them with ice works as a Frap-substitute at home. There is a list of ingredients on that you can work from, though I suspect it's quite different from the stuff you get at Starbucks. I've tried this experiment myself (with little success) so I just buy the glass bottles and blend 'em myself when I don't feel like going to the Bux. They're meant to be drunk as-is so I doubt they are as ''intense'' as drinking Frappuccino base [ewwww!!] but..... yeah that's my lame 2-cents.

At my shop, we use double-strength coffee/espresso and plain ole milk. With blended drinks there's always an emulsifier to keep the drink from separating (xanthan gum?). However, Sbux uses waaaaay too many other ingredients which turns thaat frap into frothy sugar-crack!

reb678 - I am not sure exactly what is in the mystery box milk. I know for a fact it is not the same stuff as the frappuccino glass bottles from the store. I think milkyway has it right with the ice cream because it has the thickening agents in it (emulsifiers) which dont let it separate from the ice as quick. Then just add double strength italian roast. The coffee to box milk ratio is 1/3 coffee to 2/3 mystery box milk. So try to replicate that using part ice part ice cream with the coffee and it should work out. Thats how the baristas that created the frappuccinos did it. They brought in a blender and some ice cream and put in some coffee. Showed it to their DM, they pitched it to corporate. Corporate loved it and the poor barista got a one time payment for their idea(probably a very small payment).

oh yeah or you can just go to ebay and buy a frappuccino box milk and instant coffee mix and make it the real way haha. I dont work at Starbucks anymore so its not me, but I have seen them on ebay along with everything else. (ie... white mocha, 5lb bullets of coffee, mocha, every syrup, carmel bags, ice tea bags) its crazy what people are stealing from their stores. It makes me wonder if I had one of those in the stores I worked at. Im sure there were people stealing stuff because stuff went missing all of the time.

Even with whatever is in that mix they still seperate in about a minute unless you keep stirring... blending in a handful of whip makes it last a lot longer though.
I've tried various coffee-smoothie like things at home and I've yet to replicate a frappuccino. Just a vivanno with coffee :/
