So I went in a random store today and bought a bottle of vanilla syrup (gift to some starbucks crazies) and I asked if I could have a pump for it too. The barista at till didn't know but the one at bar heard me said: "No sorry we don't give out pumps. BUT instead you can use an old one like... a shampoo pump. Just... you know, clean it out really well."
??
At my store whenever people requested them I just gave it to them, I even asked a SS one time and she said it was fine, as long as they were buying the bigger bottles (which I was).
Not to mention I wasn't going to give the bottle to a friend and tell her to use any old pump that's nice and cleaned out (or to clean one out to use or just pour the syrup in a cup)
Are we allowed to give out a pump to those who buy them? Or have I been given the wrong information??
When people buy syrup, do they get a pump?

If you buy the large bottles online they come with a pump. They should in stores, too. But you can't expect the managers to give up all their pumps either.

No they don't come with pumps in the stores, to much cost to the store. But I can tell you that a grande vanilla latte has one ounce of syrup, so a shot glass is all you need!

you're assuming of course that the mgr is smart enough to order enough pumps to keep the store stocked to begin with. I'll tell you before you buy it that I dont have pumps spare unless you expect me to pull it out of the bottle sitting at the espresso bar. Then again people have still been know to throw coniptions and to which I respond, "welcome to my world where the drive thru syrups only have half the pumps I need"

Wow! It was an expectation at every store I've worked at that if anyone purchases a bottle of syrup, they receive a complimentary NEW pump. Idk, those pumps aren't made to last forever-I would always order extra, as a matter of fact. From what I understood, those pumps only get a few good uses, then they're tossed. And by 'uses', I mean the changing of the bottle.

They are not getting replaced DARK. They are used until they stop working. And if the preclose isn't doing the syrup pumps they become crusty.

At my old store we had a bin where all the used pumps were kept and I hated it because it reeked of peppermint. I would have to first soak them in hot water than in ice water to reduce the smell. There is nothing worse than a peppermint infused toffee nut latte ;p
I do think stores should have new pumps to hand out for people who purchase the syrups.

i do agree if you buy a big bottle of syrup you should get a pump.
however... chances are there are no clean pumps in the store -- they are either being used or have been used and washed. the store buys pumps to use in the store, not to be sold. plus, you don't want to give a used pump as a gift.
just go to 'kitchen supply' store and buy one. it will probably cost around $2.. or buy them bottle with a pump [easier to find] and just tell them to pour it in there.

@theone: correction, my friend. We were supposed to always have new pumps-for the store as well as for the customers who purchase the syrups. I find it terribly disgusting that stores over-recycle syrup pumps--they're not made to last a lifetime!

While I entirely agree with you, Dark, I'm amazed that your store actually followed the policy and kept plenty of new pumps on hand. I fought for extra pumps for over a year and rarely ever received them.
It's gross, but I've seen pumps reused for weeks - months even - without being thoroughly sanitized between uses. Someone even put a soapy pump back on the vanilla at least once. Mmmm. Extra foamy latte, anyone?
