Hey there, folks! Just Darkroast here with a quick question for those who are trying to move up at the Bux.
For those who were denied, were you ever given some vaguely worded excuse like, "there's a few things we'd like you to work on before moving you to the next level", or "we'll be watching you to see how you're progressing", or even, "we don't feel you're ready. Let's give some time to embrace and feel comfortable in your role as ____'? Sometimes, the higher-ups would transfer you to different stores to ascertain your ability to be "flexible". Did you get the runaround? Watch others get promoted ahead of you for whatever BS reason? Whatever your story, I would love to hear it!

Heard this same thing before in my case. Came to work at the Buck as a part-time job. Been here about 5 years. Always given the run around. Oh you have to do black apron, go to pannel, work on ordering, etc..., blah, blah blah... I never wanted to move up from being a shift, but since they acted like it was a possibility, I was like okay. Yeah right. I have seen a few assistand store managers come thru my store who of course sucked. Not to mention the SM's I have had (I've been at one store) really suck as well. Especially the current one. There was some major (or what I thought would be major) issues with a manager or two in regards to their lacking of skills or sexual involvement with baristas, only to have to write a written statement and chat with the DM. But nothing is done. I've seen assistants stay in that role for years only to be moved around all over the place. One assistant went for an interview to become a SM at a nearby store only to be told at that time, they didn't fell he/she was leadership material. (this was after 5 years of them being an assistant.) What the hell. Why were they an assistant for so long then. The last time I spoke with my DM, I told them that I'd like to discuss my advancement in the company... Haven't had a one on one with this DM ever since. (that is over a year!) I see them on occasion when they pop in, you know they come in to check whatever and point out that the metros are dirty or something, not even greeting or saying hi to any partners. I ignore them and could care less at this point. My current SM sucks and we are always out of stuff, never closes, rarely works weekends (AM-only), nor comes in to cover shifts when partners are ill so we have to work short staffed.
I would think if you are a SM you'd at least want to work the different time periods to see how the business runs, or maybe care a little about your fellow employees and help out by coming in to cover an empty shift so your staff doesn't get screwed... Well that is what a respectful and dignified person would do. I have now gotten to the point (actually been there awhile) where I only care enough to run my shift awesome so everyone working has a decent time. Beyond that I could care less about the buck or their advancement. I get paid way less than the SM (who obviously doesn't give a ****) and since they don't care...I don't either.
Not to pat myself on the back, but I am an awesome worker who does their job great, makes sure the store is clean and stays clean, coaches people in a respectful way to help partner learning, and overall just makes sure everything is running smooth while I am there so we all don't walk out. (We all talk about it, all the time!) I am not the type to kiss **** or be fake though. SO I guess they realize I better stay a shift since they won't be able to brainwash me at any higher level.
Now if they asked me to move up...HELL NO. I will stay at my cozy store only caring enough to get the shift over with, beyond that could care less. "The DM is here tomorrow...better clean like crazy." (I never understood this. I figure I do my job good and run a great shift all the time so at least when I am the shift, the store is always ready for a "visit." I never do any extra crap. Fun watching others run around crazy to get things done. Only for the DM to point out a dirty wire metro shelf. WTF?! I look at it like this, if they are calling you out about a dirty metro and nothing more seroius, then you are doing a freakin' great job. They will always find something.
And after all the years working at the buck you realize it is the same **** over and over. I just go for my check and tips, when put together is a pretty good pay for a part-time job where I get hours, the schedule I like and days I request off. Hence the fact that I still am there. Yet, I do feel like quitting a lot of the time. I work with so many fun people that it helps to stick in there.
I guess I rather have a manager that doesn't care, than some crazy buck nazi, since that means I really don't have to care either. Plus, if it ever came down to it and I had to say what I was feeling or what really goes on at my store...That would be some crazy ****! But reading this site I see that it is very similar all over the place. Crazy! This company will fall eventually with upper management like this. The question is not IF but WHEN. The Buck wants people who they can brainwash and scare and intimidate. And since I could care less (since I have a 2nd job that is awesome, where I am respected and treated with dignity) I can deal with being a shift and maxing out at that level and just laugh and make fun of all those that are all into the SBUX culture or whatever it is now.
Sorry this is so long... I'll end it now. To those of you wanting to move up beyond a shift, I don't think it is worth it. Not in my district at least, and from reading this site not in any others either...
p.s. my SM, DM, another neighboring previous DM, and a previos SM of mine all have rumors about sexual escapades within the company running rampant. I guess everyone has dirt on everyone so nothing gets done. Whatever, like I said could care less. Just sign the check Ms. Siren and oh yeah, take your VIA and shove it. :)

It happened to me during my first run as a barista. My SM actually told me that she could picture me managing my own store but I wasn't ready yet to be a shift. I was looking for a new job when they were finally ready but I turned it down.

@lionheart: I can't believe the ASM you mentioned was in that position for 5 years!! Isn't that role supposed to be tramsitional anyways? And yes, they will move high-performing partners around to different stores to fix said store's problems, but only externals, extreme ****-lickers, and incompetent ne'er-do-wells actually end up running the stores! Go figure. How backasswards. I do think you are right about being brainwashable as a prerequisite for moving up at the Bux.
@seashellez: my dear, you may have dodged a bullet, here. It's much profitable in so many ways to be a well-paid baristas-no acccountability, minimum responsibility, and you're in and out! I wish I had just stayed a barista, but nooooo, I I had a tiny sip of the kool-aid and it was downhill from there!Posted 3 years ago #
