1.75-2.15 at my store in the pacnw.
My store makes about 2.70 an hour. It's pretty awesome. Compared to my sisters store in which they make less than a dollar an hour I believe.
I work in a mall kiosk, I make about .60-.70 an hour in tips. Over holiday that will _maybe_ bump up to 1.00.
I work too hard to make crap for tips.
I never tip at Starbuck. My SO does though. He used to always leave tips because the staff treated him well and would give him free refills all day.
But I get fancy expensive drinks. And no refills. Is it customary to tip? I mean, what for? You are taking my order and making a drink. You are being paid above minimum wage, and I do hope you are getting those 20 hours to receive health benefits.
I am always really appreciative of the staff and I always smile and say thank you. I am always polite.
It's not like when I go to a restaurant and the waitress is running around and serving and cleaning up after me while only earning 30% of a salary.
I am not being combative. I really would like to know. That is my point of view, and it might be wrong.
I would like to hear yours.
we're getting paid above minimum wage? that's news to me, because I'm sure as h3ll not.
it's kind of the same concept as tipping a bartender. we're custom making a handcrafted beverage for you, and believe it or not it does take a bit of skill (although not as much as it used to). same way you would tip a hairstylist.
okay, so I see what you are saying. I always tip my hairdresser and the bartender.
I usually order a cappuccino or a caramel macchiato or a double shot of espresso.
are these drinks considered customized if I am not making any changes to them off the menu?
If I usually order a Tall beverage, assuming that I have not made any changes off the menu, and if I like the people who work there, how much money should I leave as a tip?
I always pay by credit card; is there a way to leave a tip with my card?
on the same note, if I ask them to customize my drink somehow, by adding syrup or whatnot, then how much should I tip?
also, I note that oftentimes the person who is making my drink can't see if I am tipping them because the tip is at the register, should I hand it to them directly?
I don't expect people to tip, especially people who use their credit cards. But when you order a ridiculously modified drink, or more than two drinks (especially frappuccinos) and don't tip, it's pretty inconsiderate. I love the people who order the complicated drinks and then stand at the hand-off plane and watch the barista make it, tapping their feet impatiently like it should only take a minute to make their effing complicated disgusting mess of an order. And you know they didn't put their $.06 change in the tip jar.
Honestly, if you're polite and order a simple drink I don't care if you tip. Sometimes just being a nice customer is tip in and of itself, especially after dealing with a line of rude, impatience people with ridiculous drinks and no common sense of decency! Haha anyway, there is no way to tip with a card and baristas are not allowed to take personal tips. I would encourage you, though, if after you try your drink and it has that perfect velvety foam at the right temperature and otherwise obviously seems like someone who knew what they were doing took their time to make it well, sincerely thank and compliment them! Some baristas really do take their drink making seriously, almost like an art form, and they would appreciate the acknowledgement. if you do tip, a good rule of thumb is around 10% (less than you would a waitress) unless you feel like you had exceptional service, then tip as much you like! I had someone give me $10 just because I was funny and chatty and made them laugh.
^ that. That trumps money for me on a daily basis, when someone comes back and tells me their drink was perfect. I'll take that over the thirteen cents I get from a dollar in the tip jar. But you know, may as well tip every so often because those thirteen cents add up (to me getting to work to make you another drink another day).
Like others said, it's not expected... but it is appreciated, and I do my best to return the gesture.
On a side note... my licensed store doesn't allow a tip jar, though we put one out when managers aren't lurking around. Which means... some days I get tips, sometimes not... and that's not the customers fault, but it puts me in an awful mood. The tips make enough of an impact to make my life a little easier, or... that much harder, working in the worst paid job I've ever had.
Our tips were between $.50 to $.80 on average. They sucked bad, luckily I'm 1 week free from this company.
I'm new here and I own own two very small drive-thru's. I work at least five days a week. Most of my customers are regulars and tip between a quarter and a dollar per drink. Of course some don't tip at all but I'd say the majority do. I make an average of $55-60 per seven hours shift. Sometimes more sometimes less but not very often do I make less than that. My prices are not as high as Starbucks and I give excellent service. They customers know that they can drive up and see the the same few people everyday and we know their name and drink and they love that. I don't understand why more people don't tip...You are getting a service, no matter what it is and no matter how much you are paying. People don't understand how hard Baristas work, whether you are pushing buttons or grinding and tamping or whatever role you are playing. You have to put up with idiotic people all day and bust your butt and it's be on your feet and it's not easy. I always tip at LEAST 20% wherever I go and always tip any baristas 1-2 dollars because I know they deserve it. I really don't think it's fair the way Starbucks makes their "partners" split their tips up. I think they should be split by the day. If one person if giving exceptional service and gets a really great tip (as there are many times I have received 2-5 dollar tips) why should everyone else benefit from that persons exceptional service? Everyone else can just be lazy and not give good service and it wouldn't matter because they will still get money. It's extremely unfair. But that's just my .60cents!
I work 40 hrs a week and usually net about $51. I can't complain. After all, SBux should be paying us more not customers.
I was borrowed at a store where it was nearly $3 an hour. I was like O.O when they handed it to me.
It dipped to 80 cents an hour last week at my store. The store I'd like to transfer to is in a business area, would the tips be better?
Haha. In a business area/park?
You'd be lucky if you made more than fifteen cents per hour. You'd also have to deal with even worse customers.
@Cardgage Not a park, I mean they're frequented by businessmen/women, and we're right by an airport as well.
I can't accurately guess how good or bad tips would be. Businesspeople are stingy, but airport people don't want to carry pockets of change because of TSA these days.. my best guess is they'd be about the same you're making now, ha.
Oh my GOD. We just got our tips today and they were about $0.75 an hour!!!
I'm PAYING MORE IN TAX.
UGHHHH.
Also, today, at 11 AM, a drunk guy tried to tip us with a treat receipt. I've begun to realize our average customer is just horrible. But the worst thing? The students we have (we're really close to a college) tip sometimes, sometimes quite generously. It's the regulars we have that often don't tip. We know them by name, know their drinks, have it written and ready before they hit the register, and sometimes a buck every few weeks but not usually. It makes me quite ambiguous towards getting their beloved drinks right every morning.
I love when customers complain the cant tip us with the phone app, i have a surprising number of people insist they want to tip me with their app or their credit cards... but usually i average 1.65 an hour in tips or so...some weeks its more, some weeks its less. but were also high volume...the store i work out in the college town sucks ****.
I would kill for $1.65 (potentially some of our regulars, but where to hide the bodies? It's a small store).
It made me so sad on my way home when I found out my friend at the store I'm borrowed at on Saturdays makes an average of $2.20 per hour.
And Square is coming... at least there might be an option to tip? "Oh I'd love to tip you but I don't know how to do that kthxbye"
F*** YOU ALL how much do I make in tips every day.. f***ing $0.00 why??? because I work at a starbucks that is in a grocery store and it's not allowed..ohh and I hate the customer that is like "ohh I wish I could tip you" well me f***ing too
Being in a licensed store is just balls. Rarely do I hear good tales from them.
I work in a licensed store at the moment, and its complete **** for tips because all of our customers work at the store and dont think they need to tip.
They also think it gives them the right to treat us like **** and they are also entitled to all the discounts in the world.
I get 4+ per hour. Damn..Am I lucky...
oh hey quista. same here. maybe we work in the same store....
@limebean I work in a business area on a commuter route near an airport and we average 1.10 - 1.50/hr
