Wow. I'm sorry. I have to say I CAN believe that. We really have to watch what we say about this company in ANY public setting.
Posted 2 years ago # -
That's why I got rid of my facebook.. Stupid things and too many people watching. Kind of takes all the fun and free speech away.

That's why we come here. Not that I update on Facebook often, but if I really can't help myself from posting something work related, I make it as vague and incomprehensible as possible as to throw off the Coffee Gestapo that lurk outside my windows when I sleep.
In our current social climate, any sort of angst regarding ..anything can and will be misconstrued as some type of red flag for workplace or school violence. Discretion has to be used for harmless venting, which is the best quality of this forum; anonymous and definitely not the company's Facebook page.

I wonder who ratted you out? I have my profile on lockdown and definitely am not friends with any SM's or DM's. I need to vent! But is that really grounds for firing you? I'm sorry, but then again I'm not because you do deserve better. Do your best for next job if it comes up to be like "Oh, it was horrible mistake and I've grown as person from blah blah blah"

Wow, I'm sorry. That's certainly a reason why I haven't posted my location and name on this site. You never know when someone will **** you over. My Facebook is set to private, although I do have a good majority of people I work with on there...But, they're my good friends who share the same feelings. And when I vent, I like to do it in person to people I know won't contribute to effing me over. Sorry pally. Just look at it like a good thing. You're rid of Starbucks and you can now move on to something epic. ;)

oh god... just erased posts from their facebook page AND unliked them.. i could EASLIY get into the same situation because i just go on an on...no longer...thanks for this!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Facebook is not a good place to vent stuff. Its especially not anonymous. And people know you. like, for real.
Posted 2 years ago # -
this is one of the many reasons i choose not to go on any social networking sites.
Posted 2 years ago # -
vent on 4chan or somewhere else
Posted 2 years ago # -
You can vent on there all you want, you just have to know how to use Facebook. Like if I'm dying to get something out of me and it might be a little much, I can just block all my co-workers from seeing it.
First and foremost, never ever be friends with ASMs, SMs or DMs.

I was fired for crap I said on someone else's fb page. I KNOW someone showed it to my manager because the person whos page I posted on was private so that really pisses me off. My friend was fired for looking at someone the wrong way...which i thought was TOTAL BS...which ended up getting me fired. So...be VERY careful what you say because someone might snitch on you.

A supervisor at my store got caught on Facebook calling our store manager a fat betch. She didn't get in trouble, our DM just said that there wasn't anything we can do since it is on Facebook and in a private setting, the only thing they can do is coach her on more professional behavior
Posted 2 years ago # -
That is NOT fair. I didnt even say my managers name or call her a nasty name. I hate snitches!
Posted 2 years ago # -
I don't even know why employers are even allowed to fire based on a facebook page status. Seriously? They need to grow up, people will always have negative thoughts to say and think about anything.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Didn't we sign some sort of contract about posting online?
Either way, if a SM or DM is stalking your FB looking for trouble, that's a violation of your privacy! Plus, I've even read a few posts on here that I SWEAR were written by my OWN SM, hah!
Sorry to hear you lost your job like this though. Keep your chin up, take a few weeks off before looking for a new job, and just be glad you made it out alive!

Why would you ever post **** like that on FB, where your identity is completely exposed? But still, I wonder how they found your posting.
Posted 2 years ago # -
You should be able to. Despite being openly accessible, FB is still a very major part of our social/private lives, and to use things that had been said in that life as a reason to be fired is completely invasive.

My old manager is a sneaky **** and i KNOW her little kiss **** showed her cuz i pretty sure thats the only way she wouldve been able to see it. All i said was i thought it was BS that someone else had been fired for a very stupid reason and that i was probly next since i was written up for crap that she made up that i didnt do. Obvipusly if i had known someone would snitch i wouldnt have said a word.

Just an FYI about Facebook: You may have your settings to private, or block certain people, but employers have or have available to them, software that bypasses ALL settings of Facebook and they can and will be able to find you AND read everything you write, post, etc. Just a heads-up from a Paralegal who learned this just in time to delete my account.
Posted 1 year ago # -
I don't believe that's legal, and its already been substantiated in court that employers are not allowed to fire you based off material harvested from ones Facebook.
Moreover, software that bypasses those security features sounds like a tremendous affront to peoples privacy. Let alone if it used to circumvent personal blocks.
I don't believe said software does exist, for a variety of reasons I wont get into, but its existence and information its use yields is not legally viable to constitute someone's dismissal.

My SM will rant in front of customers faces. He was on DT and someone ordered 8 drinks and he was like "Anything else...no..8 drinks is enough!" and was as serious as a hawk.
Someone orders a frappe when he's on cold bar he will say (in a mocking voice) "Ohh yeah! XCR CRF!"
He is hilarious. Just won't stop not giving a f-ck. Wonder if my DM came for a visit he would be like that.
I would sue under the grounds of your right to freedom of speech and invasion of privacy. "One billion dollars!!!!"

MobilizedPartner, unfortunately, in California anyway (which is an "at will" state) the software IS legal to employers only, just as a background check, credit check, and drug testing. I agree with you 100% that you cannot be fired for that reason, or many others, but managers will make up a reason if they want you gone. On the other hand, since Cali is a "work at will" state, meaning you don't have to have a reason quit, and they don't have to have a reason to fire you, their "reason" is if the person files for unemployment. THEN is when EDD wants a reason as to why the person was fired, and even if it's because of something they saw on Facebook or anywhere else, they'll make up a reason that's justifiable termination so that your unemployment claim is denied. Unfortunate, but true.

Ok hold on...but it would be a huge invasion of privacy to "hack" facebook to see someone's private information. First of all, the things you mentioned: background checks, credit checks, drug testing...they're all done with consent in California. That makes the comparison untrue.
If, however, you're talking about computer software that monitors network computers at work (including the use of facebook!)... that would be perfectly legal as long as the employees were notified first.
But back to the original post...it wasn't even on his own profile. He went to the starbucks page and posted negative comments...when he's an employee! That's like standing out front of a starbucks with your apron on and screaming at costumers not to go in except in this case, his yelling is heard by the 15,000,000 people. I'm guessing there's other smaller issues the sm/dm didn't like but then op hands them the perfect excuse to fire him in a lob of a pitch and they swung hard. I feel for you op, but there's a reason we're all anonymous here.
Posted 1 year ago # -
OP was an idiot for posting "working for Starbucks sucks" on the official Starbucks Facebook page using their personal account. That's asking to be fired. Corporate doesn't even need to breach an employee's Facebook account if said employee decides to use his/her real name and post negative comments on their official page. [company wide search for name ---> verify employee with their Facebook page ---> tell DM to fire employee]
But this old thread is from a full year ago. Reviving a dead topic is stupid. Stop being stupid.

@becca001
Everyone look here. FREE ADVICE:
Never be Facebook friends with your boss; AND NEVER WITH YOUR COWORKERS (IT'S IN CAPS BECAUSE THIS IS HOW SERIOUS I F.U.CKING AM!)
Keep work completely separate from FB. I get friend requests all the time from coworkers, and I simply message back, "I professionally can not be friends with any of my coworkers on FB. Sorry for the inconvenience, it is not a personal matter, but a professional one."
@hottmommi37 However, you should not have been fired for this. The Constitution covers freedom of speech, but not slander or libel. I have not seen your comment, but it was PROBABLY harmless. Treat this as a good thing. There are tons of other jobs available that pay a starting salary better than SBUX (the third largest food retailer on Earth). On your next job application, list that your were "laid-off" and DON'T WRITE DOWN YOUR STORE PHONE NUMBER. Write down a corporate SBUX number.
The only info that SBUX can tell an employer is your dates of employment and your wage. They cannot divulge why you don't work there anymore. If you list your home store phone number, your manger might stab you in the back and tell your potential job why you were fired.
Also, while you are looking for a job, "deactivate" your FB account (twitter too) to increase the chances of a new employer finding out anything.

The U.S. Constitution protects U.S. citizes from actions of the U.S. government, not private corporations. Correct me if i am wrong.
