...A Fifteen Cent Raise...?!

I know the suck of the 15 center all too well. The worst part is, as I said on another thread, once a newhire hits their first review, they make nearly as much as I do with minimum wage where it's at now. It does absolute wonders for my morale.

Honestly, I'm just glad to get any raise. I worked at Panera for two years and did not get a single raise. I made $7.50 the whole time I was there when people who were over 18 when they got hired were making $8.50 and doing half the work I was. They called me the other day to try to get me to come back and be shift supervisor for $11.00 an hour and I was like heeeeeeeeellllll no because I know they're going to do the same stupid poop all over again.
Moral of the story is, Starbucks is not much better, but at least I know I will be getting SOME raise after 6 months. Though a 15 cent raise does seem not even worth it :/

So, I got a .20 cent raise after my review and I'm a bit demoralized. Lots of praise, I'm crucial to the store, role model for partners, hard worker, etc etc, but no one is getting above a 2 because our store isn't hitting our sales goals. I don't think that's fair, especially since when we sat down for my review my SM broke down the Success Profile and identified me as AE/CE in those areas and put me on a PDP to be a supervisor. why does any of that even matter if my score/raise is based on store goals? And what is this I hear about partners getting a (comparatively) big raise after their first 6 months? Ugh this company gets more and more disappointing.

I got a 10 cent raise, asked my boss if I could refuse it, to which I was told no, so now every hour I put 10 cents from my wallet in the tip jar, just because it is a huge slap in the face to not give at least 50 cents raise IMHO. DirtyChai, you should ask your manager why you aren't getting more than a 2 yet you are all those wonderful things to your store and why the raise was so lame.

When I used to work at a fast food company, the best of us got 10 cent raises every 6 months. You'd think Sbux would treat us somewhat better, but no. Ugh.

Of course not, they ONLY make a few billion globally every year off of the back of hard working employees.....come on clearly that's not enough money......*rolls eyes*

$00.15 an hour raise?
$6.00 a week IF you work a full 40 hour week (and fro what I read here, few do)!
What is that? The equivalent of two grande vanilla Bu11$h1T drinks a week (as Larry David called them).
So a full-time employee would make an extra 1/2 a tank of gas per month with a raise like that.Is there a designated counter space upon which they bend you over, or do they just take you anywhere without warning?
What a Company!

It's pretty gnarly, yeah. What I like is how most of our customers assume we're being paid upwards of $15 an hour- they're usually rather aghast when they learn differently. There's a reason our most loyal regulars tip so much in my store, since they know how little we make despite how much we remaining few hardy retards still bust our **** day in and day out.

I hate to rub it in anyone's face but I've worked there a year and I'm up for my second raise. But for the first six months I got a 45 cent raised. I don't understand the differences between the different stores. And it's not like I was a great employee. I've improved a lot but I wasn't the best and to this day my manager still hates me because I disagree with her at times.

Yeah. You're up for your second review. All new hires get a 45 cents raise when their first review comes around.
After that, don't be so neutral about it.
Posted 9 months ago # -
@ Smoovejayy, what do you mean 'neutral about it'?
Posted 9 months ago # -
Uh, I got a .07 cents raise for my first 6 months. I asked my SM about the first 6 month raise being higher than the subsequent raises and SM said that it isn't done that way, it's always done as a percentage of your current rate. A partner did get .45 cents raise after his first 6 months, but that's because the old SM liked him and gave him all 4's on his review.
@Iceandslice SM said no one is getting 3's and 4's on their reviews if the store isn't meeting all of its target goals. Part of my new development plan is to teach other partners how to deal with customers and difficult situations since she thinks I'm a role model for it, but I still only got 2 on the 'Puts Customer First' category, because our customer voice isn't at 100%. As for the measly raise, she said we just have to word harder and we'll earn more money.

@talldirtychai
As someone who's part of a team in our store to raise CV, expecting 100% straight out is absolutely INSANE, barring partners stealing all the CVs to fill out themselves. Our goal for the next month is above 80%, with improvements in certain areas and a higher rate of responses. Is the expectation of a 100% CV from the SM or the DM?
Also, I've NEVER heard of a store setting limits on review performace as a correlation to store performance. That doesn't seem. . .right? I had 3s on my review despite our store not hitting WB goal over holiday 2011 and pretty much failing at hitting VIA goals.

@Allison IDK, I've lost absolutely all motivation for Starbucks ever since my "glowing" review. Our CV score tends to be in the mid to high 80's but has dropped to 50's and 60's due to all the new partner trainees and transferees. I pointed this out to my SM during my review and she agreed, but she's still holding the whole store accountable even if the more seasoned partners ARE knowledgeable about coffee and make drinks quickly, etc.
Also, you're part of a team to raise CV? I have to do it by myself as my Partner Development Plan, so now I have to give up one lunch a week to checking and studying CV and writing notes for the store on what to focus on. I have to do it on my lunch break because there's no actual time scheduled for it unless I get preapproved to stay after my original shift. Our new SM is obsessed with CV, I think her old store got 95%+ consistently and she's expecting the same here. I think she's going to be disappointed - her old store was the only one in the area and a lot of her regulars lived in a small community and knew her since she was in school. Our current store's customers are mostly businesspeople and don't give a sheep if you burn yourself, they just want their coffee because they have more important lives than you, and it better be perfect or they'll throw a fit like it was personal.
I've heard about reviews being tied to store performance (on here, actually), but I never thought I'd actually have an SM who goes by it, especially since she's pretty fair on almost everything else. It definitely doesn't seem right since the review is about the partner's performance, and the categories are specific to rating the partner's proficiencies, but the scores she gave are based on store goals. Another example, I only got 2/4 on cash handling even though I've never had a problem with my till and she's credited me with making sure baristas charge for extras like CR drizz or soy, but it doesn't matter because the store didn't meet sales goals. I'm definitely feeling very resentful and my measly raise was a pretty insulting slap in the face. I hate Starbucks!

20 cents is high up there on the raise scale. Starbucks doesn't like paying people too much, given that it's all about the bottom line these days- Randy nailed it pretty solid on the head with his assessment.
The company doesn't want you, me, or anyone sticking around too long, except Uncle Howie of course. He's the messiah, don'cha know. It's an unspoken rule, given the entirely ridiculous pay rate on top of things like wage ceilings for hourly employees and lord knows what else they do to SMs in regards to money. I do know that, on the off chance you have a decent manager, the mental abuse is pretty gnarly- in their position, it's a liability to care about your partners and their wellbeing and how they're going to afford their groceries or if their kids need to be picked up from school or if they can't make rent this month. They're generally strongarmed into cutting as many corners and costs as possible, and if that means the partners suffer intensely under gruelling, hazardous and ridiculously disastrous circumstances, then so be it. Some just enjoy doing it more than others.
The company relies on transient labor. Get hired, work for a year, don't make much money and don't impact the bottomline too much other than positively (i.e. being a conscript in the trenches), get sick of it and leave. That's exactly how they want it to work out, and one large reason as to why training is abysmal across the board- they don't want to actually shell out the money to train their labor properly. Untrained, unskilled rubes are easily replaced.

@Senor you hit the nail on the head...we had a broken espresso machine at one store and I refused to work on it as it would shock and burn me and others....our ASM told me she didnt care as profit matters more than partners if we got hurt then so be it we would be replaced but profit is hard to replace.....I went to the labour board and contacted the DM, she no longer is representing the company

That's a win for our team, atleast.
And as a general, common sense thing- if your coworker or supervisor (SS, ASM, SM, even DM) tell you to do something dangerous, sketchy, or otherwise obtuse, refuse. Don't go outside the store with a broom to 'knock the giant chunks of icesnow off the awning,' don't keep using the Mastrena if it's blasting you in the forearm with superheated steam, don't .. whatevz just use common sense.
Also, I wonder when and where I should mention that apparently newhires don't get the 45 cent raise anymore.. or atleast, not around here. VentingSM, confirmation?!
Posted 9 months ago # -
It sucks that as insulted and undervalued I feel with what I got, a lot of other hardworking partners are receiving even less. I am definitely taking it as a wake up call to find another job pronto.
It is still possible for newhires to get 45 cents... if the SM is biased and gives newhire all 3's and 4's to bump them up to a 3.5 or above, the highest score tier in our review system. Improbable, but I've seen it happen. I hate Starbucks.
Posted 9 months ago # -
That's weird. My SM told me not long ago during my review that new hires get an automatic 40c raise after 6 months. He actually went to the DM to get me a 50c raise because he rated me "Above Expectations"

So lucky, Vito... :(

Just got a 10c raise this week even though I got a 2.6 on my review.
Minimum wage here is $10.25 so I got a .9% raise
If this company understood business they would not be giving such crappy raises especially in our specific job market.
I am making $10.35 an hour now (10c over minimum) and have been here just over 13 months. I'm training a bunch of new partners because our turnover is so high who are making 10c less than me and don't know jack **** about the job.The money it costs to train these new partners must be in the hundreds, I'd honestly be happy with a 25c raise which even at 40hrs a week ( I work 25) would only be $10/wk. That'd be enough to keep me, and would be substantially cheaper than replacing me with someone who (speaking from exp. of last 6 months) would stay 3-4 months tops.
This company fails to see a raise as an investment and deserves all the cutbacks they have to make to stay afloat. I'm guessing it is different in other job markets but insulting your employees with these kinds of raises is terrible for business.

If I may be so bold. Government jobs pay pretty good and have good benefits.
Posted 8 months ago # -
^ I like cruisy's idea.
Posted 8 months ago # -
My mom works for the government. Cant tell you what... But.... Its nice.
I plan on taking a similar path after school...

Just got a .20 center myself. Jesus **** Christ, this company. Less than a quarter is a huge slap in the face. I don't know what's sadder, the pittance of the raise itself or the fact that I was expecting it to be that bad.
