   1. Why do we even sell loaves? They are basically hockey pucks within an hour. Everyday, I get at least one person who comes back to complain about how dry and hard their piece of cake was.

   2. Why do employees EVER have to pay for drinks made behind the bar? There is sooo much wastage at every Starbucks. Is it necessary to require staff to pay for drinks on days they are not working?

   3. What's all this connect with the customer stuff? I thought people went to Starbucks for coffee. When did they begin going for long waits in line followed by two whole minutes of inane chatter with someone you don't know? It's not rude to help a customer quickly. Considering I've only ever seen one person at a time working at one espresso machine, with the other one always sitting vacant and unused for some reason, I would imagine that you want this person focusing on making the drinks instead of making polite conversation about the weather?

   4. Is it worth it to buy into the health plan? Considering I live in a country with free access to healthcare? What's the prescription plan like?

   2. They make you pay? Can't you apply the 1 lb of free coffee to making your own drinks? And who would know?? Kinda stupid of SBucks to charge you..
   3. I rather have my drink faster so I can get "get out of your way"
   4. Heard it's one of the best places to get health care, but I live in the states.

   that is nice. i am here too. ive been working at starbucks for 3 months now. and i kinda like the customers coming at our store.

   1. i hate it when people from closing shift wont cover/wrap the left over pastries properly and the next day it gets hard and people wont stop complaining about it.

   2. i work as a borrowed partner at different stores and when i stopped by at other stores i worked at they give me free drinks. i think it is not fair that we should pay for it because we are 'partners'

   3. when we are friends with the costumer they drop big tips. amirite?

   4. i dont know about this health plan yet. i am new to canada.

   im sorry about my english. :P also i am new to this site.
   im a partner at calgary ^^

   I'd agree with you clownfish on 3, but based on the threads here... I think customers should leave you guys alone, not talk to you more =]

   yup. i usually chitchat costumers when it is not that busy but when theres a long line and theyre still there and wont leave my till i just asked them if they need their receipt or yell can i help the next costumer please..

   1.) Meh, lots of people get them so I guess they sell pretty well. Plus, it's nice to take out mark-out loaves that are still packaged if you're closing.

   2.) In my old store, my coworkers would always just partner bev my drink (unless the SM was there). In my new store, we don't even put our drinks into the computer. If I'm not working and I go in, my manager just lets me go behind the bar and make drinks for myself or my family. He is the best <3.

   3.) I guess it's so they have a good experience while they're waiting so they'll want to come back again. Most of the time, being friendly works fine. I'm not going to stand there and force conversation with a customer if I can be doing something else. Most of the time, I'm multi-tasking by making their drink at the same time. In NYC, we never had an espresso machine vacant. We were always double-barring and B2 would be the one to "connect," whatever that means. To me, the "customer connection" is just me smiling, calling drinks out by name, telling ppl to have a great day, etc. It might not make that much of a difference to most people, but I think most people tend to feel more comfortable in a place that has a friendly vibe. Plus, my coworker got written up once for not doing the whole "I have a #DRINK for #CUSTOMER, let me know how that is for you, have a great day!" so it's gotten to the point where I'm just saying the whole thing like a robot and plastering a big fake smile on my face.

   I don't mind being nice to the customers. But Starbucks fully encourages you to stop and have "real" conversations with them. It's not enough to say "Hello". You have to make up some topical stuff to discuss with them. What am I going to talk about with a stranger? When you try to do it, the customers behind them get fed up because they're standing in line and they have places to be, and can you blame them? They didn't come to Starbucks to watch you make yourself look like an overcaffeinated moron. But when you don't do it, your manager rides your **** about it.

    Haha, this is how my BRR training went down.

    Shift: This is the part where you connect
    Me: ...
    Shift: So connect!
    Me: (turn around to customer) Hi! How's your day going?
    Customer: (stares blankly) grande white mocha?
    Me: Yes, coming right up.
    Shift: (laughs) That went well.

    Other than that, none of my managers ever got on my **** about customer connection unless I was skipping the "have a great day" part of giving ppl their drinks.
