i found out today that whoever is in the office can listen to conversations in the front and in the kitchen through hidden speakers. Whats that all about?

Where did you hear that? If they can, then I should've been fired a while ago.

Well, unless your location came equipped with such speakers/microphones, I have yet to hear anything about this. Besides I'm sure many would have been fired eons ago for speaking against SBUX.
I and several other workers refuse to even tell customers how to log onto the internet. We just tell them where to get free wifi. And yes we are not afraid to tell customers which drink actually sucks (not good for business but oh well). And let's not for get those who steal....I mean mark out food before leaving their shift. Some of them right out and ask the R person to mark it out for them.
So unless SBUX are keeping records for some odd reason, I don't believe any manager/higher ups listen to us via bugs (if they did they would know why their product is failing).

Even if they do have bugs set up (which to me, seems like a huge waste of money) unless the catch you stealing, napping, spitting in drinks etc, why would they fire you? For bitching?

I love scare tactics!
Don't believe the hype-as many have said, sbux would have lost many-a-barista if they chose to bug the stores.
And starsucks, I also tell my customers the truth about the **** bevvies. I think it's actually better for business because we don't seem like salespeople, we're real people.Posted 4 years ago # -

I totally agree, not only does it prevent the customer from getting something aweful, it is a great way to built trust between you and the customer. I think its good business. I would always tell folks what I thought of menu items. I wouldn't say "omg, its aweful" but I would certianly let them know its not something I prefer, and let them know what I thought was better.

The bugs are probably just so the manager can hear if there is a problem with a customer. I doubt most managers even care what the employees say when they're out of the room.

Oh, I'm always honest about a drink with my customers. I'll give them a face and say "No way, try this.." and usually, it works out :-) Most of my customers love me.

I have never heard of "bugs" being in the stores. But I am gonna do a little snooping to see if that is true. If I am correct, law states you have to tell people they are on tape. We have cameras at our store that "roll" all the time, but if I am correct, we don't have audio.
