   Hi, I have an interview friday/saturday about getting a job at the Starbucks around the corner from me, about a mile away. Not sure if it's really an 'interview,' as all I had to do was go in and ask if they're hiring. The guy said they were mostly looking for availability and age. I fit both so he gave me the manager's card and said to come in friday/saturday to speak to the manager.

   ...Does that count as an interview? I'm not sure. This would be my absolute first job. (I'm 20.)

   The problem. I have hot pink hair. It's fading now when I asked about hiring. But I plan to redye it today... It's not vibrant OMG FAINT! Shocking pink. But it's enough to know it's hot pink, yet looks natural on me...

   Am I gonna get turned down on account of my hair?

   starbucks dress code policy forbids hair dyed red, purple, green, blue, etc. they welcome "natural" hair. so dye your hair in your natural color if you want any chance at being hired..."

   Hot pink hair probably doesn't look natural on you. If you look around, none of us have unnaturally-colored hair (and by unnatural, I mean a color that's not an actual hair color that someone could be born with). It's really up to the store manager, or sometimes assistant store manager, if they want to turn you down just by looking at you or if they want to hire you and inform you you'll need to change your haircolor by the time you start working there.

   My opinion: if you get the job, you'll have to change the color anyway. Go into the rendezvous with an actual hair color.

   ...But I've never permanently dyed my hair. It's either its natural blonde or semi-permanent pink. I don't want to ruin it with boxed dye. And the requirements online doesn't show that. O.o Is it certain stores?

   Parabola is right. Any non natural hair color is forbidden. It might not stop them from hiring you, but they would make you dye it back to a natural color as a condition of employment.

   It's a major dress code violation, so are visible tattoo's, they must be covered up.

   it is every store. sorry I don't have a link, I'm sure you could find dress code standards on the portal (Starbucks' intranet) but you wouldn't have access to that until you are hired. If you want you could call up the DM to find out, but I can tell you now they won't allow pink hair.

   as for wearing hats, yes hats are also part of the dress code. they'll give you a hat when you're hired

   I'm not sure hats are a mandatory part of the dress code (pretty sure they are not), though they could easily be the policy of any particular SM (it depends on the SM in that case).

   But hair color is something nationwide, all Starbucks (licensed stores in Barnes and Nobles and airports have different rules), but all company operated stores. I don't have a pdf of the dress code but I can assure you that the following are in there:

   No non natural hair color
   No visible tattoo's

   And even if your SM was okay with it your DM would not be. It's not gonna work.

    In my district it's not required, and it's not in the official dress code.

    But a particular DM could presumably make them policy, or a local health code certainly could.

    I can almost promise you it is in the Partner Book that you get when you are hired and put into training. It isn't about the company's standards more than it is about customers. People, I am sorry to say, are full of assumptions. They see hot pink hair girl and they assume you don't know what you are doing. Starbucks also keeps a clean and sophisticated look because they majority of customers are 'higher end' people. If you want to keep your hot pink hair, go work at Hot Topic or a hair salon. But i have worked at least 7 years in customer retail/service jobs and NONE of them allow hot pink hair or any unnatural color. Not even BK.

    @Parabola: Red isn't an unnatural color. You're allowed to have red hair as long as it isn't obnoxious red that is obviously fake. (I've had red hair before and partners as well have.)

    But yes, sorry to say, you will not be allowed to keep your pink hair. We have a partner that has blonde hair on top with black underneath and that's pushing it.

    yeah probably, but so are tats, and I show mine everyday...no one says nothing anymore. I got them to shut up a long time ago. No way I'm wearing long sleeves when I'm running around like a crazy person, sweating like a dog!

    My tats aren't that big; the manager used to say cover them but now he doesn't say anything. And if he does bite me.

    And does it really matter about the hair??? Really. I mean, it's covered by the ridiculous hat all the time anyway, so who gives a da__mn???

    I'd say if they have a problem with it, tell them to go screw themselves.

    It really is going to depend on the manager. My manager lets you get away with dreads and dyed hair, but at the end of the day it's policy that hair must be natural looking. I think if they don't bring it up, at least make every effort to follow the dress code diligently and have the best attitude possible towards the customers. If you are a great employee and work hard, no one is going to say anything.

    Damn, they're hardcore ignoring company standards then. It's supposed to be like that in every store. The only place I saw crazy dyed hair was in Vegas.. but even then it was only like dark red.. haha. Just be aware that even though the store apparently says they don't have a code on it, anyone higher than the store manager could still write you up or fire you if they thought your pink hair was reason enough. Can't believe they'd say they don't.. that's crazy talk!

    (I've had lots of previous experience with blue, green, purple, orange, and pink hair in retail. Dyed normal for Starbucks. I am also covered in tattoos).

    Not to be rude, but I don't care what your sister told you, it is official policy that your hair must be a natural hair color (it can be dyed, but only in a shade that you could come by naturally). Period, end of story.

    Maybe that particular store doesn't follow the policy, maybe the DM is lax and doesn't enforce it when they see it, or do their job properly.

    But if it is actually a company operated store, and not a licensed place in a target, Barnes and Nobles, airport ETC. Then it is absolutely categorically against official policy to have non natural hair colors.

    And you could get written up and made to change your hair color at ANY TIME AT ALL, if your SM does decide to enforce policy properly, or if another manager takes their place, or you get a new DM or whatever.

    So if you decide to go ahead with it, and you somehow get the job with that hair, and no one says anything, don't come complaining here when someone gets all in your face about your hair color at some point and tells you you need to change it if you don't want to be fired. I warned you, very strongly.

    Not being mean, just want to make it totally clear. A couple SM's may not follow rules properly, but even if you get away with it now you are NOT EVER in the clear on that issue. And it could be huge trouble down the road. Sbux has had the policies on tattoo's and hair color since the very beginning and they have NEVER wavered for an instant.

    And Parabola, a couple things.

    1) The policy is NOT that your hair cannot be dyed. It is that it cannot be dyed an unnatural color, period, end of story. You are wrong, categorically up and down wrong on this.

    2) Play nice with the other kiddies, your behavior in the threads has just been extremely hostile. You know the rule, if you don't have something nice to say...

    Just throwing this out there:

    I have a coworker with purple dreads. How does she get away with it? She bought a $40 medium brown wig and wears it to work. My boss is happy because my coworker passes for 'normal' hair at work, and my coworker is happy because she didn't have to change her hair for a minimum wage part time job.

    Everybody wins :-)

    who cares what your hair looks like. As long as you like it, go for it. Don't let someone else tell you how you should dress, because if you did your hair bright pink, that is because YOU wanted to. Someone with bright pink hair can do the job just as well as someone with bright green hair! If they don't hire you, it's not your problem, it's theirs. Because they probably just missed out on a great opportunity to work with someone who is amazing. You don't really want to work for s--tbucks anyways, it's not all that it's cracked up to be. They will get on to you every day even if your hair is a natural color anyway. It's not worth the hassle. If anything, if they want to hire you, they should go out and get YOU your hair coloring. Who cares about their dress code? When I worked there, I repeatedly used the pages as toilet paper.

    AGE?!?! Arent there laws about discriminating about age?!

    My manager has us send people home if they dont have anything to cover up their tattoos with, and if hair is slightly out of code, it has to be changed before their next shift. Even piercings we are pretty strict about. No facial piercings besides nose, and dermals must be covered up. IMO I figure if you cant follow these few simple rules, that there are plenty of people out there without jobs, who would gladly follow policy just to have an income.

    shots, since when are we allowed to have nose piercings? When I was hired, I was told we're only allowed to have ear piercings. Just checked the partner guide and it says only ear piercings, and no more than 2 an ear.

    Nekaru, I can take a photo of the partner handbook that you get when you're hired that specifically states "no UNNATURAL hair colors." if you really don't believe us.

    Not to be a B or anything, & I know this is "just Starbucks" but u say this is your first job, u are stepping into the work world now... Do u REALLY want to be denied of a job because of stupid pink hair? I mean u used the crappy pink stuff, some semipermanent hair color wont be the end of the world.

    Lol, one of the stores in our district also has a girl wearing a wig. We called her the "green haired step-partner" and they shoo her into the back when the DM drops by or they try not to schedule her for days when the DM comes a-callin'.

    Come to NYC, pink hair is the last thing they're worried about.

    EDIT: I just want to add, I saw a girl a the Sheridan Square location whose hair was unbeweavable. By no exaggeration did it have to measure maybe 12 ft long, she tied it awkwardly so that it looped around her head, but it trailed her scarily and was still touching the floor. I almost wanted to take a picture, but I was nahh, its not that serious. It just looked really wild, because it was sooo long.

    And about the hats, some regions the health department won't demand it, like I worked in a store in Jersey where I was told we didn't have to wear them. But then the store in Princeton, while they didn't have to, I was told that Howard made it company wide policy that you are to wear the hats no matter what.

    I want to believe them, because that store was 100% by the book, like it was the gospel.
