Has your tipping policy changed recently? I know we don't accept tips, that's not what I'm getting at... My location changed their tipping policy and I pretty much have to "donate" the money to the cash register so HMS gets it.

I'm trying to find out if this is just my location or not. I think my store manager is trying to boost his sales so he gets a better bonus/better sale numbers/etc. I want to be sure though before I make my next move.

I saw your other topic but didn't know you worked at an HMS store. I do too, and we definitely accept tips. In fact, I average about $9.50 an hour with tips. You definitely need to raise hell about that.

Seriously? wtf. I've heard most others at HMS say they can't take tips. But that helps give me the confirmation I need. I'm think it's time to show up and have a talk with the head manager. I think he's just trying to make his sales numbers look better. Thanks for the reply perfectionist

I've been working at Starbucks for about 4 months and have asked around about tipping policy since day 1. I know from "older" employees that before tipping was not allowed but that was years ago... the policy changed maybe 3-5yrs ago. At least from the information I have gathered.

I wouldn't even go to the head manager, straight to HR or if you are part of a union go to them asap. Sometimes our managers joke that they deserve part of our tips for "helping" during our rushes but even then we don't split and they know better since they are salaried employees for HMS.

At our Terminal one manager tried changing our tip jars(boxes) to smaller ones and that was taken care of that same day. I usually average about $10.50 an hour after tips so you definitely need to get that straightened out as soon as you can. I wouldn't be surprised if what that manager is doing is illegal. I probably would go as far as telling customers that the "tips" they are leaving aren't going to you but back into the company...

@heavycream: that does seem odd. i would imagine that tipping requirements would vary depending on where you work. maybe you should lookup different state rules first. which state are you from?

I really don't think that's legal. We aren't allowed tips either but we do have hospital donation jars for charity. I imagine if your managerwas donating, there would be some kind of special box or jar for it.
