Hello Everyone. My name is CJ and I was just hired at a starbucks in manhattan. I start on monday in the evening. The starbucks I work at is located in a very busy Area of Manhattan and from what I seen the lines are very long and this place is constantly crowded. The manager told me that if he brings be on board to work there i have to be qucik and upbeat. I told him I work great under pressure which is true But im afraid I will mess up customers orders because My memory is not great. I want to prepare myself and learn how to make most of the starbucks drinks and how to ring the registers before I go in. this way I will be prepared. do any of you have any suggestions or tips?
I want to learn every drink.

You can't prepare beforehand, just make sure you go in with a good night's sleep under your belt so you are sharp. You won't even get to make a drink or interact with customers the first day so don't worry too much. You'll a person designated to training you for your first week, you'll make espresso drinks your second day and I believe start POS your third. If you're super nervous ask to be on register until you build your confidence and see if you can build up your bar time during slow periods. I'm in a busy area in Manhattan too and although it's intimidating at first, it really isn't that serious. Just breath, you'll be fine!

This thread has most of the recipes you'll need to learn. They don't expect you to pick everything up right away, so I wouldn't stress out too much. You WILL mess up, get orders wrong, and pi-ss off customers (and co-workers!), especially in your first couple weeks.
The trick is not to freak out when you do. Good luck, CJ! =)

every drink is literally the same. syrup, shots, milk. mochas, white mocha, hot chocolate and cinnamon dolces are the drinks that get whipped cream.
I'd say the thing that throws the newbies off the most is the caramel macchiatos. they are made with VANILLA syrup NOT caramel. the only caramel in a caramel macchiato is the caramel drizzle on top. plus it gets one less pump of vanilla to make up for the sweetness of the caramel on top. srsly if you can remember that much you are a lot further along than most new baristas.

Hmm, and a chai latte will get water (because it's tea) but an *iced* chai will not because the ice acts the same as the water would. :)
Seriously, (and I can't stress this enough) the KEY is to not panic. One drink at a time is all that is required of you, *especially* when you're starting. You have time to think it through. If people are rushing you, they can wait their **** minute and let you do it right. :)
Good luck! You can totally rock this.

The first few times I was on register (and this was less than three months ago), I had to have someone stay with me and tell me how to type in everything. I was pretty sure it would take me weeks, if not months, to figure it out and do it naturally. Same with writing drinks. But it becomes second nature much sooner than you think, and you wonder why you were ever freaking out.

When you're first on register don't hesitate to put in every single modifier on every single drink. Pay attention to which cost extra, so you know which mods to key into when you're putting it into the POS.
Make sure to get bar time and don't hesitate to ask for help. Check out the recipe cards if you can find them in the back. Sometimes I'll still refer to them.

And, don't trust my recipes that were linked. I apparently suck at my job. Hahaha. Just use the damn recipe cards.

the portal can... you can log on w/ your own username ("us" followed by your partner numbers if you work for a US store) and password from the laptop. or you can just click the portal icon on the MWS, I believe the barista password is "tomato"
also there should be recipe cards somewhere in your store.. most likely by the bar.

you should have recipe cards, as well as manuals and whatnot.
you won't immediately go on bar, though, you're going to be doing a lot of booklets and such at first.

there are no cards and i am working on the floor already

We keep our cards in the back hidden. Have you asked anyone if they've seen them? The partner that started with me and I studied the crap out of those cards.

Sidenote: We can say crap?

Speaking of crap, I wonder what abominations are coming up for Fall and Winter, now that summer's basically over. TANGENT ALERT

I honestly didn't learn anything from the cards. Bar and frappucino drinks are something one would learn better through hands-on training and practice. I was given them by my ASM one day to study before solo-barring... and I couldn't say that I picked up anything useful then.
Nowadays I like to give them a glance every so often to soothe my second-guessing worries about number of shots/pumps.

Only thing I learned from the cards was what goes in what drink. As far as number of shots/pumps I figured that out when thrown on bar for 7 hrs at a time... And if I have a question? I ask the customer how their reg barista makes it since it's always atypical drinks like a matcha water (shaken, for the record).
@senor I'm sure we'll be getting more apple juice in stock pretty soon. FML.

Caramel Apple Spice is awesomesauce! I just wished that our store had cinnamon dolce sprinkles.

Its not like alcoholic beverages, where recipies from one another are like.... wtf is in here.
its all the freakin' same.

Tex, where have ya been?
I like CAS, I just never order it because hate it when people order them while I'm on bar. Grrr. Rick, your store doesn't carry CDL sprinkles?
Posted 1 year ago # -
We don't have 'em either, Shanaynay.
Wait, are you talking about the CD powder?
Posted 1 year ago # -
I started to think that our store actually carried it... but no, cinnamon powder is not the same thing as the cinnamon dolce sprinkles we're supposed to top off CDLs with.
We have cinnamon, vanilla, and random powders. Ours aren't kept at the condiment bar but on top of the Mastrenas instead, because we know that the customers are going to make messes with them.

I wish my store didn't have the CD sprinkles, then when customers asked I can say no. For some reason those people can never ask when they order their drink, they ALWAYS have to run over to bar and ask for them. If you ask me, they don't make any difference in the taste of the drink.

I wish my store didn't have a restroom. One less thing to clean during a slide, one less thing a customer complains about, and hundreds less non-paying customers walking into our store.
