So I was on the portal yesterday.... It looks like we're going to have to start wearing name tags. I am horrified. Customers are going to exploit the heck out of this one :/

Actual tags? I thought it was just names on our aprons........ I don't want everyone knowing what my name is. But I can get a partner to switch with me.

getting my name changed to cockterror mcfuckington. deal with it.

Where on the portal did you see this?

I'm a licensed Barista and let me just say that y'all are wusses. Almost every customer service job requires one. Deal with it.

they have both positives and negatives if we have to wear them, then maybe customers can point out partners who actually give a flying **** about the job. However people like me will be royal screwed.

My manager showed me the Siren's Eye printout. Seems there is a choice to get partners either names on aprons or those magnetic chalk pen nametags. Its up to the SM and DM. She is in favor of aprons because it'll show whose butt nasty dirty aprons are being hung up and not washed for weeks, lol.

Chaitea, it's in action items. Right when you log in it's the first thing you see, along with an oatmeal mass markout and stuff like that. It was the only item I had time to read, there's a link to the documents and store meeting outline too.
We're going to be getting ours embroidered, because the consensus at our store is that nametags look tacky. I'm supposed to scope out prices, figure out how many we're embroidering. I'm tempted to go with the best possible quality and F the price, but then we might get stuck with tacky **** nametags.

We've had embroidered hats with names for ages.
Posted 4 months ago # -
Ummm..not that many places require name tags.
Posted 4 months ago # -
I heard about our names getting embroidered on our apron for forever. I'm in favor of that for the same reason lulu's DM is.
Seriously people wash your aprons.

We have name tags over here. It's no big deal. Just customers try to be your friend by calling you by name. Like get tha **** outta here.

we have "name-aprons" but we're stoked about the nametags since what they're just gonna be little baby chalkboards that we put our names on? sooo cute. plus you can change them all the time.
awesome.
i mean, maybe work is no fun for you guys but my store is a blast?Posted 4 months ago # -
i'd go on about the whole "third place" thing but we all know that starbucks is well trained in making a series of noises that get a positive reaction.
i don't have heaps of work experience, so i can't say much. my previous job was at a theatre, & i didnt have to wear a nametag there. so while i'm not dramatically opposed, i'm not enthusiastic.
& it's not as though asking for a name is a hard thing, yknow? a customer filled out a survey recognizing a barista by name, so "hey whats your name" is not a big deal of a question. but whatever everything is just incentive to find a better job because lol whatever nothin i can do about itPosted 4 months ago # -
i heard the call with the dm the other day, theyre also giving us name tags over the embroidering, apparently it would cost more.

I don't really give a damn if we have our names displayed or not (as long as it is limited to the first name). And while it may be tackier if we have to use the mini chalkboard ones, I foresee it making life a little easier with new hires and also those occasions where you forget your apron at home and are forced to use a nasty mystery apron from the back (assuming that there are a few spare name tag things you could borrow).

I've had to wear a name tag for the last 2 years. And an ID clipped to my shirt with my unpronounceable full first and last name. It sucks. But... it's not the end of the world.
Sometimes customers walk up to the counter and address me like we're best friends. And I've never seen them before. Maybe they're trying to be nice... but it's awkward. Especially when they don't see the shortened name tag and start trying to say my full name. "Ghjieiulouuuhhheiwlian...?" Uh.
Also, if there is in any way to make a joke about your name, you will probably hear it twice a day. "Oh. Yeah. Ah. Ha... ha. Haven't heard that one." And people like to tell me about how, "My cousin's ex-girlfriend's sister is named Unsweetened too!"
But for the most part, I don't think many people even notice. Once, just for fun I wore someone's old prison ID all day, with big bright red letters across it: "OFFENDER". Even my coworkers didn't notice, and none of the customers said anything. Or, maybe they were afraid to? :)

I loled at the prison tag.
Yeah wearing a name tag definitely doesn't change much. In my experience the biggest difference is going to be in those customers who take time out of their day to realize you're a human being with a name and they use it when they thank you.
Embroidered aprons sounds stupid though. Mines going to be extremely filthy if that happens.

I thought that displaying both full first and last names isn't usually encouraged due to security/safety reasons (ie stalking)?

Where I am requires security clearance.

I don't mind the idea of name tags, but only because they are the lesser of two evils. My store currently has a laundry service. If we had embroidered aprons, my SM says we'd have to wash them ourselves. I am SUPER broke and use a laundromat to wash my clothes. I COULD NOT afford to be washing my apron all the time!
I can't even afford to wash my work clothes all the time. Which is why I have enough to last me a whole month so at the very least I can do a proper load with them.

I really do not like it when people say my name when I don't know them.
Posted 4 months ago # -
I'm ok with it as long as I can use a nickname.
I was allowed to when I was a server and it made for more interesting conversations and better tips. People are curious about an interesting name :) Ask for a nickname!!

I don't care about name tags on principle, but my name is -edited- and if one more creepy regular calls me, "Sweet -edited-" I am going to start randomly stabbing things. Hahaha
(Name edited out to protect identity. Keep yourselves safe, guys.)
Posted 4 months ago # -
Most people won't be able to pronounce my name (it's Dutch) but we have a lot of problems with snotty regulars. The kind that will go out of their way to be awful, even when I'm nice to them :/
Posted 4 months ago # -
The chalk tags are SO tacky looking. I'd rather an actual name tag, although I understand that they would get forgotten in the laundry daily. I'm going to beg my DM to let me embroider my personal aprons (I used to work at a LC) tomorrow.

I like wearing my name tag but some customers just make it creepy. This guy comes in all the time and says my name in Spanish and he always asks when is my next shift, he is so creepy. Take your donut and your coffee and get outta here sir! I could just hide my name tag and give myself another name.
Posted 4 months ago # -
I hope not. People butcher the hell out of my name. Especially White people, which is 99.8% of our customers. Ugh.

My solutions:
1. Nickname (stated above)
2. Don't take off jacket (it's cold in my store anyway)
3. If nametag, draw barcode.
4. ...
5. Profit.Posted 4 months ago # -
I work at a Starbucks inside of Target. We have Target name tags but ever since some guy looked at it creepily & said "thank you, then my name" I told them I lost that garbage. Haha.
