Yes, I know I'm probably lucky to not have to do them at my location due to them sucking, but a customer asked me for one and my shift had to explain that no partner working had been trained how to perform one, and we didn't have all of the equipment (no starbucks scoop.)
Want to walk me through it and come up with an approximation for the scoop? Because, you know, as crazy as it is, I feel like as a Barista I should know how to make coffee. >_<
Pour Overs

lol, I'm in the same boat. I've never had to do a pour-over because our store usually sticks with the bold pick of the day past 8PM.
Last week, the one time we brewed Pike instead, we had 2 as$hole customers demanding bold. My coworker offered them a french press, and had them wait 5 minutes for their cups.

We have to do pour overs for every decaf. It blows. But then... there aren't many decaf coffee requests.
I had one lady tonight...
Her: "Halfcaf iced coffee..."
Me: "We don't have decaf iced coffee"
Her: "What, so you can't make halfcaf iced coffee??"
Me: "No."
Her: "Can I just get coffee then, halfcaf..."
Me: "We actually don't have any decaf brewing, so it would take a few minutes..."
Her: "Well, is there another Starbucks in the other terminals???"
Me: "They aren't going to have decaf either"
Her: "But are there other Starbucks???"
Me: "Yes!"
Her: "Uhh... fine, I'll wait... how long will it take??? I CAN'T have that much caffeine!"Stupid*ss b*tch... seriously, then don't drink coffee!
I hate decaf customers. They're all insane. The only purpose of coffee is the caffeine.
Anyway, I think it's like, half of the french press scoop maybe? Not that we do french press, ever, but we have the scoop and I think I heard it's twice the size?? And for pour overs, it's 3-4-5 of the smaller scoops. So... half of that perhaps.

We measure out about 0.15 grams of ungrinded beans for a full french press.
The coffee/water ratio supposed to be like 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds per 8 fluid ounces of water. For espresso, it is the reason why tall (12oz) gets 1 shot, grande (16oz) and hot venti (20oz) get 2 shots, and iced venti (24oz) gets 3 shots.

We do pourovers for all decaf at our location.
Filter in the plastic "pear" from Holland, 3/3/4/5 scoops of coffee and just dump the appropritate amount of water on top of it.
My **** coworkers want me to stir it while I pour. Umm, I don't care enough to do that.
It's really easy, just time consuming.

I hate those effin things! I always just offer an Americano.
Unsweetened, when people ask for decaf or half-caf iced coffee, americano works best. Same price, too.

Yeah, I offer americanos too (iced or hot). Some are persuaded... but not all. :/

Hell, I love pour overs! Give me time to just stand there and watch it pour! Nah, but it is really annoying to get one at like 7pm at night...with 3 refills for it. (Has to be pour over too!)

Why don't we just give them via! Open a package add hot water and forget the pour overs.

@ unsweetened.... I would have just given her regular iced coffee and said it was half decaf.like she would ever be able too tell the difference

^ I like the way you think! Lol.

Haha, I didn't think of that.

Three scoops for a short cup, too? I always do two. Oh, well, I don't really care... I hate pour-overs. When we're out of decaf or bold (both of which our store stops brewing at noon), I tell people that I'll have to make their coffee on the spot and it will take "an extra 3-4 minutes." I know it doesn't actually take that long, but I just want to discourage them lolol.

we get a customer every once in a while that will ask for two venti decafs. i always say okay, it'll be a minute to brew you the fresh cups. he says, "GOOD BECAUSE I HATE THE POUR OVERS." I try to explain to him (in a nice way) that he's an idiot and it's the same thing, or offer him an americano. "I HATE POUR OVERS AND I HATE AMERICANOS." He makes us brew a half batch of decaf (since quarter batch isn't enough for two ventis) for his stupid face. I hate him. I tried to explain to him that we do pour overs to cut down on waste and he throws a hissy fit. He then also says "isn't your policy just say yes?" and then i throw hot water in his face. not really. i wish.

@Karmatose: That's what my trainer taught me a few months ago. 3/3/4/5
Edit: He's a dou.che, if that matters.

We stop brewing decaf at noon and people are always bewildered... but with my charm I manage to convince them they REALLY wanted a decaf americano anyway. Except this one grump who actually sounds a lot like the guy in This_is_nonfat_right's story. Except we make him get a pour over since it's just one drink.

@Thinkdeep: On the side of the brewer we have there is a sticker that says 3/3/4/5 scoops. If it helps i don't ever understand that either.

If a customer demands a pour over of decaf after 12 and I've thrown it out already, I'll make them wait 5 minutes, fake grind coffee (there is nothing in the grinder), scoop Pike's Peak into the filter and make one from there. And then I'll smile and give them their "decaf" and watch them drink their precious coffee. Muahahaha. Or I'll just put whatever is in the urn and serve it to them. They won't know it's not decaf until they're in bed trying to sleep.

^ genius. The reverse decaf.
Posted 1 year ago # -
It is 3/3/4/5
I always thought short was a 2 also because I just thought one less scoop. Anyhow, ours is posted at the side of the coffee brewer too. My only issue with the pour over is that I will forget about them, like I am on reg and I keep going through customers and the same person comes through and I feel like an a$$.A previous job I work at is closing down. And it was the licensed Seattle's Best, they had all their fixtures for sale so I told the boss I wanted the pour over and he sold it to me for 5 bucks. We don't have a coffee maker or a french press, so it's perfect for guests that come over and want their own cup of coffee.

Genius MelonSyrup - I wish I'd had the foresight to buy things from the licensed SBC across the street that closed down last month...

Someone in my store told me that pour-overs were easy and promised to teach me how to do one before we closed. That never happened :T

"We don't have any decaf brewed right now, but we can make you a decaf Americano if you don't want to wait."
Decaf Americano now for decaf BC price or waiting for crappy decaf pike at full price. Such an easy sell.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Decaf americano has less caffeine than--never mind. I just caught myself there.
Posted 1 year ago # -
we keep pike, bold, & decaf on the cadence all day. I've never had to use the french press at the store but I use one at home.
what's a pour over? is that what you call using the french press?
I asked one of the other baristas if they've ever decaffed someone but they said no.. guess i'll have to start this trend at my store for **** lol

Dry Sharpie is the barista that lives in my head, and tells me to say mean things to the ****hats that come into my store and treat us like crap.
