our manager, in writing, told us that we would be written up if we called in --for any reason. kinda want to publicly reveal that tidbit of knowledge. and i also want to vomit on the countertop too.
Even though its policy, I see managers look past tattoos and jewelry all the time. I personally have a tattoo on my wrist that I only cover when the DM is around, and I wear a necklace and a ring on the floor ever since I started. It sounds like your manager needs to loosen up if you guys are getting written up for calling out...
As for the diabetes bracelet thing, I'm pretty sure that's illegal (or just morally wrong.) My sister is diabetic and wears her necklace at all times. Its extremely important. He should report it or something...

We all wear jewelery and have never been called out... a lot of the guys have stacks of bracelets on their arms & some even wear earrings. I guess it's at discretion of management until someone higher up says anything.
I used to cover up my tattoos until I noticed another girl there NEVER covered hers. So I stopped covering it and when my manager saw it all she said was, "Shut up! When did you get a tattoo?!" The we laughed about it because I have had it forever and everyone was shocked. I don't even cover it when my DM is there. Bracelet thing, he can get in serious trouble for that. Have your partner call partner hotline.

My manger just hired this kid with HUGE stretched ears (they have to be 00) but I can't wear my tiny nose stud, have more than one earring on each ear or have a tiny pink streak in my hair that has a HAT over it.
I just don't get it.

I can't wear my plugs. I was a 2 gauge, I don't even know anymore because I kept em out for 5 weeks now. Also took out my lipring, but there are people with bright colored and skunk hair there. Why :(
I'm stretched to 8mm. Asm only just noticed last week, but doesn't have a problem with it because I wear conservative plugs that look like large front studs from the front. I wear tunnels only if I'm feeling daring. Demand a copy of the dress code- as far as I know,you're allowed two per ear. I removed my third to comply, tbh. But tattoos tend to be ignored unless the DM is coming...
But what state are you in? That makes a big difference...
(Health dept spews crap about facial piercings falling into food, but I don't see how a screw-on barbell is more likely to come off than a butterfly-back earring. I think they're just bloody discriminatory. :/ )
Naw, you'd be surprised. When I was a pierced lil youngin, the balls of my jewelery would actually really easily somehow become loose and fall out, especially if I'd been playing with them or if it was enflamed. And with septums, boogers get stuck on their, and sometimes they lose their grip. o_o I've also had plugs fall out before, but that was as I was stretching them, or if I had temporarily put different ones in that were bigger or smaller, they had a tendency to fall out.
Tattoos, it makes sense, a lot of customers frown upon tattoos, my tattoo however, is beautiful.....so my managers don't have trouble with it often. Hahaha. :X I always have it covered up though, its high up on my forearm. But if i'm getting down and dirty, those sleeves are coming up, and I really don't give a **** that my tattoo is out.
As far as hair goes, I don't have any facially, this would be because I am a woman. But my hair is always below my shoulders. I feel like this is a toss up, because only one side of my hair is below my shoulders. I don't think my manager feels comfortable saying "Can you put uh.....the right side of your hair back?"
my manager used to let me get away with not covering up my small tattoo on my wrist until our DM came in one day saw it and flipped the **** out, literally wanted me fired, all the while I had a wristband in my pocket and put it on, but he still insisted it was just SO OUT OF LINE that it wasn't covered.

I have never gotten trouble with customers over my ink. I don't know what I'd do if someone reacted badly to it O.o. However, I've found that when people DO notice (as big and bright as my tat is, most of them are clueless) its usually a great conversation starter/tip earner :P

For the past few months, I've been wondering why one of my coworkers wears this wool band on his forearm. I assumed carpal tunnel, but today I finally put two and two together: he has a large tattoo underneath.
I don't understand the big deal with tattoos. People are...people. Your barista isn't going to be a robot. You might not like em' but other people will and do!
The medic bracelet thing, they're not allowed here either but I remember reading somewhere that you're supposed to inform your manager that you have whatever it is you have in case something goes wrong.
@Quackers: Informing your manager doesn't help if they're not at work on the day you collapse. The medical bracelet is there for medical personnel to make the right decision before and after.

I ALWAYS have at least 1 bracelet on. Usually there are a couple of hair ties too. I currently have two beaded bracelets on one arm, and then a rubber band bracelet, as well as a bright green paper wristband from a concert a few days ago (which I intend to wear until it falls off...) Also a TARDIS necklace which I never take off.
I almost always have writing/drawing on my hands or forearm (boredom in class, typically. No tattoos, but it's the same concept)
The bottom layer of my bangs is purple. My socks are never neutral colors, and you can see them.... annndd I can't say my undershirt is the same color as my other shirt a lot of the time. Also, I wear purple and black vans instead of my plain black shoes some days...
That being said, my DM said NOTHING about my hair or anything else that I'm wearing, and it's not like I've heard anything but compliments about the purple.

Yeah, I got a wrist tattoo when I was working for the Bux. I knew that if I got anything too big on my actual arms I would have to wear long sleeves. And eff that, it gets so hot in my store... but I was wearing a wristband to cover it and then I realized that this other girl has tattoos all over and doesn't cover them, she wears 3/4 sleeves to cover the ones on her upper arms but nothing over her wrists. So I said eff it and stopped wearing my wristband. I have 4 other tattoos but they're all hidden by my work clothes.
THEN... we get this memo from our DM, I don't remember what the other stuff was... oh yeah, some crap about only giving out big straws with venti dome lid cups, anything else gets a green straw, and we're only supposed to sleeve water based beverages now, not everything. Like, in the drive thru we're supposed to ask customers if they want a sleeve before handing them their drink. So it was a stupid memo anyway, because who the eff has time for that when 99% of customers are going to say yes. They've been coming here for years and have always gotten one, of course they want one. But the other part of it was that if we have wrist tattoos we have to wear long sleeves, wristbands aren't appropriate. Guess what I ignored... no one has said anything to me.
Yeah, I hate the tattoo thing. I'm planning to get my entire forearm done in a single day at some point, and don't like the idea of needing to cover it up "for customer comfort" or whatever. If anything, it's a talking point. Like Target encourages these things, as does Barnes and Noble. If people don't like it they can deal with it.
