I think it is such a tragedy that shift supes are paid a scant amount more than a barista with an abundance of hours. In california, shift leads start @ $10.05 pr hr, but a 2 yr barista could and would be making nearly $9.80 pr hr! We're expected to take FULL responsibilty for "the business" as well as being mega-baristas, then we receive the most condescending treatment from the SM & DM. Such little, insulting, incendiary and belittling "compensation" from this company that touts itself as a respectful place to work is a joke.

Sounds like the answer is: stay a barista.

Or go someplace else that could use a dose of your bitter brew.....

Darkroast...just suck it up. that's my advice. everyone knows that the baristas do the real work. as a shift, you probably count change, do some ordering that you likely screw up, shift the pastries around and then ask the baristas to clean the toilets, do slides all the time, lift the mats and clean the floor, mop the lobby, clean the toilets, take mountains of trash to the dumpster, wash ALL the dishes, clean drains, make crappucino base, make the beverages, etc. what are you doing while all this is going on? well, yr probably in the back taking your sweet-**** time counting down someone's till while you simultaneously eat a big mac with extra-large fries. in a just world, baristas would get paid MORE than shifts. sadly for us poor beleauguered baristas, life ain't fair.

Jobbamison: I am a shift, and I guarantee that I do everything that I ask the baristas to do. No I don't get paid enough, but its what ever.

PlehhitSux...I wish you worked at my store, cause it'd be great to have you there. Job

I KNOW RIGHT! LOL we'd have so much fun! im reading your posts and I like the way you think! You could always come work at my store, we pretty much all have the same opinions!

My attitude is pretty good most of the time, but I certainly have my moments of righteous indignation. But you have to admit, it's hard to work really hard all the time and not develop some resentments. I don't know what to say. It's just a J.O.B. no pun intended. We'd have fun, though, no doubt.

lol.... well the problem is that those SMs and DMs think that they can just dump **** on us and have us be content by getting eaten away by the flies that it attracts. I mean come on, we have to work really **** hard just to be treated like dogshit

here's a good story about flies: our store had a lot of flies and a woman complained...understandably. she asked if we had used furniture and sofas in the store and if the flies might be attracted to our gross furniture. i told her that it was a possibility, given the fact that starbucks is now committed to the "socially responsible furniture re-utilization project," where we take used furniture from homeless shelters and place it in our stores in order to reduce the burden on our local landfills. i think she bought it, but definitely wasn't too happy about that answer.

oh mann thats hilarious... yeah... i am sick of their ****... they can kiss my ****...

DarkRoast...sorry. I was a bit harsh. I'm angry and I occasionally say stupid things. You're right...shifts don't get paid enough. Neither to baristas. But let's not compare ourselves to each other, let's compare our pay with the fact that inflation is out of control and real wages haven't really risen in eight years. it's all F'd up. instead of giving departing CEOs $50 million severance deals, why don't they divy up that cash among the people who really float this bloated-**** corporation....and by that I mean baristas and shifts. everyone knows that DMs don't do ****, so we won't count them. when they aren't monitoring lobby floors for classic coffee cake crumbs, I have NO IDEA what they're doing. but that's a whole other deal.

pretty much...

Hey jobbamison,
It's all good. I know EXACTLY how you feel: I just saw my fellow shift lead in the back reading some **** pretending to work while we're up front trying to help customers(mind you, the **** knows we're consistently understaffed and she is needed up front). But she is pulling a trick I personally detest: manager/shift sitting on their **** while the others slave away. I cannot, in clear conscience, ask a barista to do something I wouldn't do myself- except for the pastry case! :)Posted 4 years ago # -
Geez, you START at $10.08 an hour as a shift? Man, your baristas make more than I do as a shift here in NoVa (which is the largest growing area in the country).

From what I've seen the shift supers don't deserve that much more than Baristas. Try working at McDonalds for a where the cashiers get $6.15 and the shifts get $7.20!

I agree with "justgivemedrip"..........just stay a Barista. I started as a store manager and only made 2.50 an hour more than I make NOW with tips. I have been with Starbucks for 8 years. I demoted myself to be with my family, and demoted myself to a Shift Supervisor. I cannot recall my exact pay. I stayed a Shift Supervisor until 2005 and demoted myself to a Barista because again, more family time, plus I only got a 28 cent pay cut and I didn't have to deal with the **** anymore!!! I have thought about stepping up again, and have had my assessment, but is it worth it for a measly 28 cents an hour more??? Seriously?????????????????????????????

I think if Sbux invested a little more of its resources in its employees as opposed to sorbetto or vivannos, we'd all be a bit happier!

Well, perfectionist, I'd have to say you're a bit off here. The McDonalds workers I've seen (that aren't legal/illegal immigrants) don't deserve much more than they make (if that's the case, which, everywhere I've seen, the basic is $8/hr, so I don't know which area you're talking about). But, I as a shift supervisor, work my butt off, sometimes more than I actually have to. Especially in the mornings. When the SM isn't in the store, we are basically acting as SM (minus the orders/payroll). We're the ones who have to deal with the unsatisfied customers - and let me tell you, the brand of customers we get are MUCH different then that of McDonalds (simply bc they think they're **** don't stink), we're the ones who are responsible for money of all kind, we're the ones who have to run around and make sure that everyone else is doing ok (in regards to being stocked, breaks, etc), and we're the ones who take the heat if anything goes wrong during a shift. Those who open/close are responsible for making sure everything is in place, that the baristas and customers are safe at all times. And I personally have had to cover more butts then I would have liked to by working 12 hours standing on my feet pleasing you customers.
In conclusion, yes, there are some shifts that don't deserve what they make. However, you'd find that in any place, including very well paid employees in higher positions at companies all over the place. Don't lump all the shifts together, ESPECIALLY those of us who work our TAILS off just to have a few pennies left at the end of the month to pay for gas, bills, and groceries, just because you've seen a few bad apples somewhere along the line.
Thank you.

Amen to you, CustomersSuckAtSbux!
People don't seem to realize that it's the shifties who hold a great deal of responsibility when it comes to running the store. Like you previously stated, we have to monitor the business on all levels: breaks, sales goals, inventory management, customer relations, etc. We are link between management and the baristas-perhaps a little bit of both!
Remember the current tips lawsuit in Cali? Yeah, maybe shifts SHOULDN'T get tips-instead, Sbux should pay us better since we share a significant stake in accountability and responsibility. I'm NOT saying that the barista's payrate is adequate; that could use some adjusting too! They're the backbone of the company.Posted 4 years ago #
