   I am so **** right now!

   I live in a relatively rural setting outside of a major metropolitan, and I can't get anyone to **** hire me! My theory is its because I have dreadlocks.

   But the funny thing is, is even though I live in a rural setting, there still is a **** Starbucks! I know that I could get hired there because a guy there has dreads.

   But out of the three years I've lived here, I've probably applied online 4 times. It always says they're "accepting apps," but they never hire anybody that I can tell!

   Like WTF. Starbucks is probably the only potential employer that I haven't given a followup call to my app. I think I haven't done this because it's such a **** sterile application process.

   Anyway, why I'm **** is because I applied to a Starbucks in a grocery store that is 30+ minutes away from my house, after I vowed to never work that far away from my house again (the commute makes me want to strangle little old ladies), because it was Starbucks! And then, I get there, and the store has like a two-person interview process. The first person is the manager of the Starbucks/Food area, and she interviews me for Starbucks, and I feel good about it, then the second person is the Assistant Manager of the grocery store, and he does his half, and then gives me the job offer for a customer service position WTF.

   If I wanted to work at a **** grocery store, there is also a Walmart 2 minutes down the road from me, right next the Starbucks.

   So WTF do I need to do to get hired at Starbucks?

   I have an excellent work history and volunteer history, I'm in college. WTF.

   Ok, seriously, I don't care how much you hate your job. I need a job. I have mouths to feed. And because I'm not a jesus-lovin-tight-laced-racist-**** I can't see anywhere else that would hire me.

   I went through a lot of stores interviewing before I actually got hired. At most of them, there were incompatible schedule desires (i.e., when I was in high school, they needed morning people; when I was a theatre major in college, they needed people to work evenings.) Some of them were only hiring to fill one position, and I apparently wasn't the one out of however many. No big.

   But for the time I finally got an interview and was hired, like many of the jobs I've had, I sought the manager out personally and pointed them in the direction of my application. Went in in person where I could, introduced myself, etc. In job situations I couldn't go in in person, I called and let them know that I genuinely wanted to come in so they could get a real "first impression" feel for the real, human me and not the paper/screen application, but couldn't for one reason or another. Don't neglect doing this just because an online application seems sterile to you; if you want the job, you need to be more than another application in the database. Make yourself real to them.

   I hadn't even realized that I had never called SB back about my app, because I have everywhere else, but I finally did and the girl answered the phone like a dope. But I left my number and name and was all cheeky. I actually go to that SB like a couple times a month, and I never see the manager. So, anyway I hope I get a damn call back because I like my SB people. They're an eclectic mix.

   But seriously I've read on here that people just fill out an app and get an interview. Seriously, wtf. That has almost never happened to me. And it seems like there is such competition to get in at my SB.

    Yes, yes, YES to everything that ToLoveAnArtist posted. I got hired because I followed-up with various store managers about my application and happened to have the right availability for one of them. Both are very important; you can't rely on just one or the other.

    nanagnome, clearly money isn't a big enough problem for you yet if you're still being so absurdly stubborn over something as trivial as your hair. I've had unnatural hair colors in the past, I love tattoos and piercings (although I personally don't have any), I believe in letting people believe what they want to believe and living how they want to live... but there comes a time when you have to compromise. This is how society works. You can obviously choose to live outside it (and I'd support your right to do so!), but then you have to accept that there are certain things you can't have when you make that choice. You have no freaking right to complain about being poor when you bring it upon yourself. LOL.

    You sound like one of those poor people who complain about being in massive credit card debt, yet as soon as their paycheck comes in, they go out and splurge on new clothes and shoes and the latest smartphone on the market... pathetic. Someday I hope you'll grow up.

    I doubt the reason you are not being hired is because you have dreadlocks, but more along the lines that you're a whiny little b-word and probably ooze that condescending assumption that "every-one-is-mean-except-for-me-i'm-so-dam*-artsy-and-soulful" in your interviews :)

    I bring on the experiences I have mentioned here by expressing my disrespect for other lifestyles. Totally.

    They're like, "Hello miss, can I please, if it's not too much trouble, bother you for a soy latte? I would be greatly obliged!"

    And I'm like, "Soy?! Haven't you heard of dairy, you freak?!"

    Then they're like, "I said NO foam, EXTRA HOT... that's the VENTI size! And I said DECAF! Can you hurry?! My plane is BOARDING! Is THAT what you call NO FOAM?! Uh, remake that! And I'm kind of in a hurry here!!"

    I'm sure your dreadlocks just ooze spirituality and enlightenment. And indulge in ignorance? By what, getting a haircut? So you can get a job and support those mouths you have to feed? Really, if you already realize that the only thing standing between you and a job is your hair, and you think your hair is more important, then there is nothing more to say.

    And we're losers that have nothing better to do than whine about our jobs? LOOOL at least we have jobs.
    But yeah I'm such a loser. But I guess I'm still better off than that sorry fvck who's here whining about NOT having a job.

    I suppose your spirituality does not include, "..judge not.." etc.
    Having your beliefs and attitudes accepted, or at least tolerated involves reciprocating. If you want respect, you have to give respect. It's earned, not deserved.

    You said that the grocery market wanted to hire you and that you have mouths to feed. Take the job. It's a job. You said you needed a job. They offered you a job. Take the job.

    nanagnome, It's understandable if you don't want to cut your hair because of a lifestyle choice or personal belief system, and that is respectable. However if it is truly your hair that you believe holds you back from employment, you have the objective choice between the very important concern of your belief system and the very important concern of the mouths to feed. Those above simply made that decision for you, but if you chose one, don't complain about the consequences of the other.

    I highly doubt it's the dreads. I've had shift supervisors with dreadlocks, they just tie them back when they are on the floor.

    ^^^ that ^^^ In fact, I have neon pink hair, one of my SS has a mushroom tattoo on her wrist and two other have plugs :3 it must've been something else.

    P.S. I'm in rural country/island, with ignorant people that judge people on their looks, and even so, WE got hired. :D Take the job at the supermarket for the meanwhile, then work your way up to joining the nearby starbucks. if you become a regular(A NICE ONE D:<), you have more chances on scooting into that particular store, since they probably know you better.

    Brah (may I call you "brah"?), if you're even still reading this thread, take it from a Sbux newbie: Visit the store at which you're seeking to get hired, meet with the SM (not a barista, not a shift, not the ASM; the SM), and explain to him/her why you want to work for Sbux. Prepare to reveal how much you know about the company, Howard Schultz, and talk about your children/personal life. If you humanize yourself with the SM, s/he will most likely give your application a second look. I wish you all the best. Also... solely because I think dreads are sexy... keep 'em.
