From time to time we get SBUX customers who are Jewish asking about different drinks and if they are "Kosher". Now, I'm familiar with the Jewish dietary laws but not about all the ingredients in SBUX drinks/foods.
I had one lady who asked if the Frap was kosher, lol. Through me off for awhile, had to look at the ingredients (you would think with Howie being Jewish he would at least have Kosher items for the Jews). In the end, poor lady took up most of my time and only got a hot tea instead.
I don't believe that they are. I think that when you prepare it in the store that makes it not kosher. Thats why brewed coffee can't be kosher but whole beans in an unopen bag can be.
Yep....cannot be kosher unless the facility preparing it has been certified by a rabbi. However, if the person isn't that strict....some of our items may be loosely called kosher.
There is a "K" marking on the side of the boxes of prep(frap, frap light, etc) you should look for that to indicate whether or not something's kosher.
One time I actually had someone ask me if the brkft sandwiches were kosher....I could only reply with "um, they're made with pork." They took the turkey bacon instead!
Even if all the ingredients are kosher, I believe the cafe would also have to certified by a rabbi as well (and well, from what I have seen of most Starbucks cafe's, i don't think there is much of a chance of that). I could be wrong, but I believe I read something to that effect once somewhere. Someone please correct me if I am.
I was reading the coffee and tea resource manual yesterday (swotting up for my coffee master test at the end of the month)and it was saying that while the beans are kosher the store itself isn't so the unopened bags are fine ground and brewed coffee isn't. I would presume the same thing would apply to any other product - once they are opened in store they would no longer be kosher. And yes it is *not* an easy process to have a facility certified (a friend's business looked at it and decided the hassles would out weigh the benefits.)
Well, someone NEEDS to tell these Jews about Kosher Laws because lately we are getting a whole lot of "Is this Kosher?" question.
Had a couple who literally had us pulling teas, frap boxes, mocha, etc. to see if anything was Kosher even after I told them nothing is Kosher in SBUX.
After bitching and moaning for an hour (I am not joking...it was an HOUR), the couple ended up getting a tall coffee and a tall tea.
As if they should be surprised! Sbux is like the fast food of coffee-one can't expect too much in the way of dietary restrictions.
That being said, just look for the "k", as I said before, or the "U". If it's not there, it's not kosher.
Next time open your warming oven and tell that **** **** to jump in. LOL, I'm only joking. Though I've had someone ask me how many carbs are in the whey protein powder in our Vivanos. Yes...the whey...you know the milk plasma byproduct of strained dairy.
