You can see it. You can read it on their face. That eagerness to make you do one more thing for them (for free, mind you). You think, maybe they just want a splash stick -- or "little green thingy," their preferred moniker -- but then, like hot oil down a castle wall, the words come pouring out of their fat mouth, "...and can I just get a large ice water?" Can you JUST get a large ice water? JUST an ice water? I wish the floor had a circular rotating platform that I could control with a massive lever next to me so I could show you in the most DRAMATIC way possible that in the foreground, you can clearly see that I have a cup queue longer than my WINGSPAN*, and behind that is not TO, no no, but OUT the door. The doors are being propped open by people in line, and you want JUST an ice water? If I could, I'd decaffeinate your damn water.

Blonde, teenaged Californian high school girl: Can I get just, like, an ice water?

Barista: Would you like an ice water or something just like it?

*I'm 6'4", by the way, but we'll talk about what I hit my head on at work later

Dude. I've become so pro at reading body language. When they come up to the hand-off bar, I interrupt their fat mouth before the words even come out. "ICE WATER?!" and they always look so surprised. I just wish they **** knew how frequent AND ANNOYING requests for **** water is. Like...SH!T...CARRY A DA.MN WATER BOTTLE WITH YOU.

Water bottles can be problematic though. I worked at a store right along a really popular bike route. Cyclists (a group of which I like to refer to as an "arrogance"), squeezed into spandex shorts that need not be worn by people of that size*, came up to the hand-off and shoved their water bottle in my face, blurting out "CANYOUFILLTHISUPFORME??????"

Or worse, they'd try to fill it up themselves. Gross. You could always hear them coming up to the hand-off too, their lock-in shoes making that douchey clickity-clack sound. They're all butt buddies with our CEO, since this store is like, 2 miles from his house.

*I also wonder about how they can balance all of that on their bike... I imagine in a similar way as Bowser on a motorcycle would.

SERIOUSLY. And the requests always come when you're butt-deep in drinks. Sometimes I'll tell them that they have to wait in line, especially if I have a ton of drinks. If they complain I'm just like welp, everyone has to wait in line to get what they want. And move on. I wish I could take the ice water and throw it over the entitled bastards' heads sometimes.

Of all the nonsense I deal with from customers it's the ice waters that really make me feel like I'm going to snap. The people who just appear at the hand off and figure you should give it to them NOW. Not only to they want to skip the line at the till, they want to skip the line of drinks for PAYING CUSTOMERS at the hand off too, because it's "just" an ice water.

Water people always stare you down until you make it for them. It's creepy.

During the Summer, I make waters ahead of time. Line them up five at a time. I'm sure it's a violation but I could care less. Get out of my store. "Can I just get four venti waters and a tray to carry them?" What... are you serious?

And it's always during a rush. Where do these people come from???

Our manager made us switch to tall free waters but people would complain so much. It's free water, ****. Be grateful.

7/11 down the street charges 10cents for their ice...so all the homeless come to our store to get that free water. The rich can be just as annoying too! As you all know there could be a bazillion cups on the bar and they want you to serve them right now!!! Why can't they do it like other coffee places and have little paper cups and a spout in the reach of the camels?

I have a lady who won't even ask. She straight up stares at me until I look at her and she says "oh, I'm just waiting for an ice water." as if her drink magically disappeared from the queue. But any time anyone asks for an ice water I wait until I'm done with the drinks lined up before I get it for them. First come, first served, people!!

I had a homeless guy cop an attitude with me once because, when he asked me for a large iced water, one of my partners (who was about to go on her 10) said she'd make it for me since I had a line of drinks to make - but she forgot to mention that she'd make hers first. After he waited a few minutes, he rudely interrupted me ("Excuse me, where's my water?") then yelled at me. I gave him the look of death, stopped everything, then made his ice water in cold silence.

I told myself that next time it happened (like every other time I got yelled at by some psychotic customer) that I would calmly tell him how rude he is while giving him the "I will kill you if you come back here" look, but I never did have the guts to do it. :(

lately i've been giving people trenta waters with two ice cubes just to be an ****.
like, i wait about three minutes after they ask before i even motion to get a cup. then i let the water just trickle into the cup (the pressure at the dipping station is really awful). the whole thing takes like 30 seconds to fill and i make sure they're watching. even when they're telling me to stop putting water, i just don't listen. i keep it going. i put the two ice cubes in. "please order your water at the register next time; we need to ring it into our system. THANKS!"

at least now the regulars that come in and ask for a water know better than to ask me while i'm on bar. they order it at the register. i make it so it's actually iced and in the order that it appears in the cup line.

One of the most annoying things ever! My store solved this problem.... sort of. We got a big, fancy glass container and fill it with ice water every day. We set it on the counter near the bar and put lots of paper cups so people can serve themselves.

"Oh, can I get an ice water?"

"****, serve yoself!!!"

Of course, I say it much nicer than that. But that's what I think every time I point them to the water jug. And I get such a sense of satisfaction out of it. But is that water good enough for everyone? No...... Some people just insist on bigger cups. Why can't you just stand there for a minute and drink until you're content? Are you going on a hike? Why do you need 24oz of water on the go? Go buy a water bottle!!!

We had a big cambro that we used to fill with ice water, the DM made us get rid of it because he said that's not "world-class" service. But oh do I miss it every day amidst all the "can I just get a water" mess. And then the people who ask for a bigger cup. "Go Fxck Yoself" is what I think in my head, but in reality I sigh and give it to them.

"It is world class service! The most efficient way of getting water for our customers is to already have it at their disposal. They can drink to their heart's content without interfering with paying customer's orders. Plus it saves us on cost of goods for large cups."

I used to be a waiter. If I had a table and everyone ordered the same drink, they get a pitcher. It just makes good sense. I'm not going to run around and do needless work just because you're paying me to. I'm going to use my brain to solve a reoccurring situation :D

When people ask for water a lot of times it ticks me off too. I had an obnoxious lady come in today with her kid and friend. As I was trying to get her order she just totally ignored me and kept talking to her friend. Then after she finally stopped talking to order her heart-attack-in-a-cup this is how it went down...

Disgustomer: I want a blah blah blah...
Me: Okay, no problem. *Goes and makes her drink* Here you go have a great day!
Disgustomer: Oh and could you rinse this cup out for me? I just bought it for my son. Can you rinse it in really hot water?? (Her friend asked her why she can't wait until she gets home... same thing I was wondering...)
Me: Sure... *goes and rinses it AND dries it* (Why was I so nice?? -_-) *Hands her the cup*
Disgustomer: Oh and can you fill it with some ice water? (Why couldn't you tell me that right away?)

Yep, I raised my voice to her. The first time ever I have raised it to a customer and I really don't care. She was so freaking obnoxious.

I work at a licensed store inside a larger store, so not only do we get a lot of customers asking for water in the afternoons, but we also get every IMPATIENT EMPLOYEE who works in the store asking for it as well... We'll have a line to the door, and one of them will come to the handoff, butt in front of the customers waiting, and ask "Can I get a water???" GET IN LINE, FOOL! I'm not here to be at your beck and call. Get some respect. It's beyond irritating. We even have a water fountain in the store for goodness sake. Then we have some employees who are so stinking impatient that they come into the KIOSK during rushes (98% not even asking mind you), get in front us blocking the ice box and the counter where we make ice drinks, just to get their own water... So that means we have to stop making drinks because their big butts are in the way and wait until they're done.

Buttheads. All of them.

ice waters make me mad when I've got lot's of drinks but I still give it to them. It gets them outta my face quicker. They always seem to just...stare. I don't like that.

As for the venti annoying ice water people...I'm not allowed to give them water in any kind of normal cold drink cup so muahahaha. (Some people get mad as hell, sheesh buy a water bottle then) We give out normal plastic cups with no lids.

Today, a lady ordered 2 venti ice waters and standed in the middle of the two registers for 20 minutes while they made their way through the queue. Every time she got jostled by someone trying to dance past her so they could order, it felt like a small victory.

I always tell them they have to wait in line because the other customers will get mad.

if they disagree then I tell the cashier to ring up an ice water but tell the customer they have to wait til it comes out in the queue.

and if i'm feeling nice i'll make like 12 grande ice water and put them in one of my fridges or leave them at the handoff.

If I have a line of drinks, and someone comes up asking for water, even with their drinks, I tell them that I have to put it at the end of the line. Most tell me that it's fine, but then end up leaving by the time I get to it, so it just sits there and someone else takes it. If it's a teenager asking me for a water at the bar when they clearly haven't ordered anything and don't want to wait in the line, I tell them that they have to order it, even if it's free because we have to "mark the cup for inventory purposes". Most of them just leave because we get so darn busy that our line is out the door most of the time.

Hate when they come thru drive thru and order a water. Or a cup of ice. Or a bag of coffee grounds, then get sh**ty when you say your out of grounds right now. "Well, can you see if there are any in the machine...I can wait." No, you'll have to check the bucket up front. If there are bags of grounds in there, take them. If there aren't, we're out.

One lady called the SM cause we wouldn't bag up some grounds for her during a rush. Really? They're effing FREE! I should stop making drinks for paying customers to bag up some FREE SH!% for YOU??!!
