Im always torn between what to do. ill fill the cup with ice and cue the shots over the ice and that should make enough water for the americano. Should I put more ice in the cup to make up for the melted ice or should i be putting more water??? the baristas at my store have had some discussions about this. we seem to be split on what to do. what do you do?

Pull the shots into the bottom of the cup, water to the top line, ice the rest of the way up. When in doubt, check the recipe cards :-)

Water and espresso to the top green line, add ice.

did none of you think to look at the recipe card? it takes literally less than a minute to find on the portal.
standard dictates: pull shots directly into the cup (with syrup if requested), then add water to the top line, then ice to 1/4" below the rim. if they want milk or cream, put water to the second line and then milk/cream to the top line.
ETA: by "none of you" i meant the baristas at OP's store

I usually don't put as much water and just had more ice since its usually pretty warm still

@MettaTexasPeace: Shots first, THEN water, THEN ice.
You've been doing it wrong all this time.

I've been doing it wrong too then. But so did my trainer and so does everyone at our store. plus, it tastes watery and dead if the shots pull into an empty cup (and sit there while starting the next drink).
I've also decided that BRR is stupid and I can do things much faster without it.

Sharpie, are you trying to make them melt cups?
I'm really laughing inside. How many ways can you crack an egg?
My trainer told me to put a little iced water in the bottom "because if you pour shots in the cup, it's going to melt".
so: iced water, shots, syrup, and milk (as needed) to the top line of the cup. Then, ice. Voila.
And now, you're set for life.

And by extension, are you trying to set HOT CUPS ON FIRE?
DO NOT PUT HOT LIQUIDS IN PAPER CUPS ZOMG

Oh, trust me, I think it's ridiculous too. I'm joking Sharpie.
I just dealt with hours of "do things this way, not this way, but this is how starbucks does things, but this is how we do things........" I gave up an just started nodding.
water, shots, ice, cup. Sheesh. Don't overthink things Texas. It's just coffee.

I make them a little differently.. I add water to the first and a little ice to the second, shots melt the ice up to the third so there's only little bits of ice left... Add ice depending if they wanted room... I think it makes for a stronger americano because ur not immediately melting the ice that you would typically added after you pulled the shots and added the water, all IMO though. Most people like extra ice where I live

my store hot and cold americanos we just do shots first, in the bottom of an empty cup (obvi syrups first if applicable) and then add the water...but the other day I picked up a shift at another store and I was making an A and this girl literally grabbed the cup and threw it out and then brought be a cup of hot water and pulled the shots into and told me it was alwayssss done like that.
Idk I don't like changing my routines.lol

Well it used to be that you couldn't pull shots directly into cold cups but that apparently changed sometime around when they rolled BRR out. Now its perfectly safe to pull into the plastic cups (apparently they're rated to some 350 degrees? Don't know if that's true or not). So yeah, shots, water then ice. Though I have one customer who insists that I make his water first, then shots and ice. According to him "the shots go flat if you pour water on them."

yeah, the new iced cups won't warp like the old ones did. they're lined with some kind of heat resistant chemical.
again, to reiterate.
shots, water, ice, lid.
this is the only order. there is no other way.

altho i have quite a few regulars that ask for "double shot over ice" and they REALLY mean pulled over the ice. smh

the shots cant be poured over the water because it will give it a different taste than if the shots go in first. Originally we used to pour the shots over ice, but corporate decided that pouring the shots into the cup would not melt the cups. Shots, water to top line, ice to top. Everyone knows that.

The cups don't melt if you put shots first...
I guess I've been doing it wrong this whole time. I put water first, then shots and ice.
Somewhat related, I don't know how you do the Starbucks Double Shot drink. It's Ice to the top of the size but then what?Is it 1,2,2 shots or 1,2,3? It brings classic too right?
Posted 1 year ago # -
it's either 2,3,4 or 2,3,5 - i've been told both by shifts and no one can give me a straight answer.

The cups don't melt. It was around the same time as BBR started that they changed them. I still don't pull them directly into it though if I'm making a grande or venti, I get crap for it all the time but I just find it quicker to pull 2 on each bar and throw them in the cup... If I pull 2 directly into the cup I always end up spilling part of the other 2 on the side of the cup. Maybe I'm just clumsy. But the only time I do ice first is when people ask for extra ice... I was taught to fill the cup with ice, put all the shots over the top and then add more ice in this situation, then water to the top, because people who want extra ice tend to really want extra ice and minimal water. And yeah, the double shot is 2,3,5. And it gets classic and the milk standard is 2% (after it's shaken. Pretty much just the correct size scoop of ice in the shaker, classic (same amount of pumps as normal drinks, as far as I know), shots, shake shake shake, put in the cup and then milk to the top. Although I've found that the majority of people who order double shots modify the crap out of them so the only thing that really ends up mattering is how many shots go in it. I rarely make one that is ordered to standard. I'm just excited that they put the button back on the computer... I was getting kinda sick of ringing it as an iced americano, putting an ask me on it, and then getting interrupted by whoever was on bar going, what's this ask me...

When'd they put the SD button back? I just noticed it today - I've been ringing them in as shots of espresso + classic. Oh, and even though the venti gets 5 shots I only pull/charge for 4, since that's already tying up both espresso bars and it takes too long :X
