I started roughly 5 weeks ago and I have only ever been on bar about two times, and even then it was only for about an hour or so at the most. I was on DTO once, but other than that, I have been on register EVERYDAY. Is that not supposed to happen? I'd like to be on bar more often so that I can learn to do drinks, but, I don't think that will happen any time soon...
Should I be on register THIS much?

That's pretty normal. Just ask to be on the bar. If you have to, ask *multiple times. People should switch around positions ever couple days or else it gets boring.

It isn't supposed to happen, you should be moving between both stations and spending the most time where you are weakest at this point in your training (they may have taken you off trainee status but you are still learning). However it happens a lot, especially if you are good on the register.
I really had to fight to get time on the bar to the point of changing one of my shifts to a quieter shift and insisting to the SS on that shift that I wanted to be on bar. Once I had bulit my skills up that way I went back to 5 opens but still insisted I got time on bar - my SM wasn't particularly co-operative but fortunately my DM was interested in my progress and pushed the matter. And when it was really busy I would still end up back on the till because I was the best register person we had on that shift.

i have the opposite problem
i just started and im always on bar, like my entire shift, im fine with that, but then the one or two times they put me on register im so slow because im not used to itPosted 4 years ago # -
Well, what's your availability like? If you can only work certain hours, then you might be setting yourself up for the register.

Yeah, at my store there are 3 openers. The shift or mgr, and two baristas. The one with the longer shift always get DRIVE THRU as the register person. The shorter shift gets retail side. Then the next two people in automatically go on drive through. One DTO and one DT bar. Then the next one after that goes on retail bar. At least that is how deployment is set at my store. And there is a similar thing at night.

When I started, I was mostly on bar, but then got thrown to the register and stayed there for a few days straight, so I was pretty slow at that. Actually, I mostly started with hours of lobby slides and running dishes, brewing coffee :/
