What do you guys do to keep your spirit up at the 'bux? we have secret santa and pastry contests, amongst others.

We always do "secret santa"... and last year we started 4 weeks before Christmas. We did a SMALL (five bucks or less) gift per week. It was really really fun. :)

DARKROAST...a whippet is the co2 cartridge that you use to make whip cream...

Do you mean 'doing' whippets? That can't possibly get you anything other than a massive headache!
We also call them chargers, bullets, and my personal favorite - co2 cartridges ;)
My store doesn't do anything fun. I heard last year the people that worked christmas day got a duffel bag that said HMS Host and an HMS host towel or something.

I have no clue what that means so I guess we are both missing something. I have been known to buy the kids some pizza. Or bring food up there I made from home (huge pot of spaghetti or something similar in nature). Let the kids know they are appreciated keeps up the moral.

sbuxhater: what do you mean by "kids"... do you have mostly teens at your store? Hmmm. At my store we have teens, people in 20's, 30's, and 40's, even retired person. Just curious.

I had/have a bad a habit of refering to my crew as "kids" particularly when I am running shift. It was my job to look out for the baristas so they were "my kids" :)
Tho I tended to do it even when I wasn't running shift because the SM didn't have the baristas backs and I couldn't let them get chewed out for the SM's failings. Upside was they had my back too and a shift just swings when you all look out for each other.

Amen to that, Farflung! As a shifty, I side with the baristas 98% of the time (that other 2% represents the occassional schmuck barista). You know the SM's are out for their own ****, we're treated like friggin mules!
