Wanted to get a quick poll.
How many of you get names specifically per drink?
And how many of you just get one name for the entire order?

I've been getting better about asking for names. I mostly ask for names during the rush because customers are stupid and assume every drink is their drink. Any other time I do not ask. I hate when people say "don't you need my name?" when they are the only customer in the store. On a 4+ drink order, I usually put stars on the cups unless the customer asks me to put names individually. I am kinda lazy.
Yeah, we generally just do [Name], [Name2], [Name3], etc.

Everything @This_is_nonfat_right said. Except I don't think of it as being lazy, I think of it as saving time!
If I ask a guy for his name when it's slow it's because I think he's cute :)
My favorite is when I ask "do you want whipped cream?" and they respond "jeff"
We had a label maker. There was no button on the flippin' register for names. Which sucked because unless the bar barista was listening, they have NO idea who decaf!
Yeah, so no names whatsoever.
ALSO sucked when I was trying to mark down drinks that had no modifier whatsoever on the reg. Before the magical wonderful labelmaker, I would just mark "PTL, sub apple juice for L!" or something like that for a passion tea apple juice.
NOW, I have to yell at the bar barista when the ask me comes up. Also, I have to input every flipping modifier in the register instead of just hitting mfl and writing the mods on the cup.

I thought this was common sense :P
Write names on cups when it's busy and everyone is waiting on iced coffee.
People will steal each others drinks EVEN when you call out a different name. Don't hand off drinks until you're sure the person who approaches is the rightful owner of the drink.
At my store we get names per order because it's usually just too busy to waste time getting multiple names.
We don't ask for names :D Little victories.
I get names 90% of the time. But i hate it when the customers start getting cute... I 've had:
'Mama'
'superman'
george bush'
ZZ Top'
Jerks.
I actually prefer getting names on cups; it makes it easier when I'm handing out six modified versions of a grande latte. Apparently people don't listen to their drink order being called, they just grab, grab, grab.
"Is that my decaf nonfat, no foam latte?"
"Is your name Tim?"
"...No."
"Then no, it's not."
@WhipandDrizzle: Hannah Montana seems to be a favorite where I work, which happens to be next to a high school.
We take names at the new store I'm in.
But personally I only take names if the upper management is around, or there's a line I can't see the end of.
And I take one name per order. If Mary orders a latte, and her husband orders a cappuccino, and her son orders a mocha... they are all for Mary. Less talk, more good.
Also... if someone gives a bullsh-t name, or even if they're name is weird... I just don't call it out. In fact, I usually only call out names when customers start bunching up around the handoff or getting grabby.
Same as Unsweetened, they're all for Mary.
I don't care what name you give me, so long as you RESPOND to that name and PICK UP YOUR DAMN DRINK.
If it's super busy, I take names. One name per family. John? I'm gonna write John on all the drinks his family orders. If it's one person, or two or three, no names. Though it's annoying as hell when a manager on a power trip comes and makes me write names...with one customer in the lobby!
@This_is_nonfat_right: I love your star idea! I am constantly drawing stars on receipt paper too...I call them my stress stars. I draw them for every customer that makes me mad or draw stars for every second they make me wait in awkward silence.
ditto during the busy times...because like everyone said it could be an Xhot latte and some dirty person will pick it up and ask if it is their xcr frappe.
during the very slow times I also only get the names of cute customers for my self or fellow baristas. I dropped the ball one time when this fine looking man came walking in ...and I was scolded for not writing his name down.
