Before they basically left you to your own devices at the bar? I'm just curious as to how long it usually takes because my co-workers keep telling me I'm some sort of freakish coffee prodigy because I finished my bar training (and surpassed employees 5 months my senior) after having worked about 3-4 four hour shifts. Is this really that strange?
It doesn't seem that hard to me...
The job is utterly simple. It's just remembering the different ingredients for each drink. Otherwise it's 3-4-5/1-2-2, 3-4-6/1-2-3. 2-3-4.
I learned the basics of operating the store within two weeks of in-store training. After that, it was up to me to learn the short-cuts or understand why we did things a certain way. I'm a much better barista 1 year later, than I was 2 months ago, or 4 or months, or 6 months ago.
One week, then I was left to fly on my own. I pick up things relatively easily but of course it was a few months before I become comfortable on bar. You learn as you go with this job, it's not just what you learn in your modules it's a lot of trial and error too.
2 weeks.
Everyone acted like I was some kind of prodigy, too. I was in training for a week before I was left alone (closing with just a shift and another barista so I definitely had to learn quick). I agree with dry sharpie, it really is simple once you can remember the basic formula
2 weeks, but I had about 2 hours of training on bar then my training consisted of just working the bar and asking questions whenever they came up.
I got the prodigy thing a lot about other things like knowing how to close the bars and such. I'm simply the type of person you only have to tell stuff to once.
Once week for me, and then I was left alone to deal with sh*tyness...argh!!!
depends on how busy your store is, really. it took me about 3 months before i was comfortable working our weekends.

who knows...when I was hired my manager did not train us or allow for us to be trained. So I never had any "formal" sbux training.
took me less than a week but i've seen it take people months. no one is GOOD at bar in just a few days, though. that takes time.
My barista training took about a week. My shift training took two....and the only reason it took that long was I required a brief barista refresher course because I technically left the company.
That being said, though I finished my training and certification in about a week, it took a MONTH for me to be fully confident in my barista skills and comfortable working bar through rushes. Even a year and a half later I still naturally gravitate towards till (where I have been told by many shifts/sm's/dm or higher that I am a GODDESS!).
Two weeks for everything is all we get at our store, if you don't pass certification at the end of two weeks, you're out.
Two weeks, but I have a good memory and I already knew a lot about coffee/coffee drinks. Training in a Clover store SUCKS because you basically make your own coffee tasting for First Impressions on the Clover. For a month after that, I was trapped on cold bev station and Clover. I didn't hot bar much at all.
I guess I'm still in training almost a year later. Still not certified :D
lols all these prodigies make me laugh. Everyone is better at something than everyone else.
Anyways, it depends on how your store trains people. My SM seems to believe in pushing people until they almost crack, as I had to be on bar by myself on my second day without anyone to assist me or tell me what to do. I had to ask the barista on register how to make every single drink.. not to mention my first day consisted of sitting in the back doing almost absolutely nothing since everyone was panicking about ecosure.
Since I worried about this situation repeating, I studied all the drink recipes hardcore during my breaks and even took pics of them on my phone so I could study them at home. Everyone thought I was a "prodigy" too but that was only because I was forced to study on my own time. I hated it.
Officially 2 weeks until I became certified... unofficially my training stopped after day 4...
my shift training was a lot more formal and longer than my barista training -2 weeks. I was never even certified as a barista.
Two weeks officially, but I was doing practice shifts after I learned beverages, which was the second or third day. I was still doing small things wrong, though. Calling some things wrong/in the wrong order, sleeving grande (non chai or americano) cups etc.
IIRC, I read some modules and did paperwork for one day. This was half a decade ago in a really **** store with a really **** SM. So..
Day two was with the wolves.
You should be a certified barista at about two weeks, if properly following the barista training modules and such.
We've had some new baristas trained at other stores, for whatever reason, and we basically had to train them all over again. :/
3 days. thats all they gave me. So of course i feel like I basically trained myself because i studied all the drink recipes on breaks or at home. The only thing someone "taught" me how to do was steam milk...which doesn't take much brain. lucky for them i took initiative to study and ask questions and i already had a little experience. But I think its ridiculous how "training" works.
I don't even know what barista training modules are.. I had a 'basics' rundown on my first shift, and from then on it was sink or swim. I didn't even know we had a beverage resource manual until a month into the job.
and there has been no talk of certification either.

Good for you! Seriously, I love this. Are you young(er)? It seems like the younger you are the easier the bar is to grasp, among other things. The last time I was technically in training was when I was 17 (6 years ago when I started at a licensed store) & I remember it taking maybe two weeks for me to be comfortable on my own during morning rushes. I love being on bar & I'm also our store's primary Learning Coach, especially on bar. If you start at a busy store, yeah it's kind of hard to get the right training done so I definitely feel for the partners who get rushed training sessions. :/
IMO, barista training is kind of like life. Due to unyielding demands, it's a continual learning process.
Like Dry Sharpie said, you think you know it all, but every 6 months, you just end up looking back and thinking that you were a moron because NOW you know it all, haha.
2 1/2 weeks?? (maybe 3) but the thing is I only learned about closing 2-3days ago....(its being about a month since I started off). So I'm a little scared to be out there working because (although there is a senior partner helping me out (or watching my move) during bar and I'm alone during R) I feel that I don't know everything and I have a feeling they'll just tell me "I should know this"......so ....yeah.
3 weeks? not even. my official training lasted 2 weeks, and I just didnt know what I was doing for about 4. my manager went awol, and another sm in the district dual managed us, which worked out in my favor bc he is the one that "trained" me, my training was basically 3 shifts at a well run store, teaching me how to make capucinno, lattes and coffee and americanos, how to grind, how to do small tasks, run POS, so I had 3 shifts there in total... One running register, one on bar and one floating... and then I was sent to my home store after each shift to try an open, mid and close.. it was GREAT! but then partners from other stores came to my store and helped drill me on learning the procses, which was great bc my partners didnt care at all, so when the borrowed people realized i cared and wanted to know, they helped me through the process, and it turned into a successful although painful and drawn out learning process... Even up to this summer Ive still be realizing ive done things wrong bc i simply never learned how to do it properly...but at least I care enough to figure these things out.
One 40 hour week was my training. Oh joy. :P
Mine wasn't even a week, but then again I came from a licensed store...and I don't know if I still have to become certified again? If i do, i don't think it happened.
mine was a bit rushed. I got called in a day before my training for a call out, after that i had one other day, and then i was thrown on cold bar cause it was buy one get one for the frappuccinos. after that i just had to learn on my own from other baristas, No trainer at all.
