This is ridiculous, but I need some confirmation to ease my soul. I'm working in a new store and the PM supervisor kept trying to correct me on things like I'm a newbie. I'm really trying hard to play nice with these new coworkers...
I've been told by managers that in the chai latte, hot water is added up to the siren's eye. Meaning... up to the bottom of the logo, NOT the siren's eyeBALLS. Please tell me that this is correct? :)
A chai latte is half chai concentrate + hot water and half steamed milk topped with foam, so wherever that lands on the siren...
I can't remember the last time I even put water in a chai latte.
Where DOES it go? I feel like I make my Chais too watery. x.x
Judging by this picture, hot water would go slightly above the siren's boobs. We're a family friendly establishment, you know.
From what I understand, and what I was trained, it's water to the Siren's EYE. Not the bottom of the logo -- the eyeBALL.
But where does this theory come from?
I'm just sayin'... I don't think it's meant to be taken literally. It doesn't sound literal to me. Especially since I've never heard it used in plural. Eye. Singular. She isn't a cyclops. And the entire logo is in fact referred to as "the siren's eye." So, to me "up to the siren's eye" sounds like it's merely up to the bottom of the logo.
I can't say my manager's tend to know wtf they're talking about most of the time, but I would say that being "trained that way" by a shift supervisor isn't hard evidence for this either.
When I was trained I was told it was to be filled to the actual eyes. But i usually just guess what's halfway and go from there.
When I first started another barista told me it was to the siren's nipples. I thought it was funny, so that's what I do and no one has corrected me yet!

I care because I am being "corrected" on it by a supervisor. And I don't take too kindly to it when I think I'm right. I wouldn't give a toss otherwise... it's the difference of only an ounce or two.
wait wait so how does siren's eye = bottom of the logo? it has "eye" in it & there is nothing else related to eyes on the entire cup. i want to know how this would make sense ever

I have heard the phrase 'to the sirens eye', but I have never had anyone clarify it to me OR correct me if I am making the chai wrong. There is no such thing as a 'perfect chai', even the customers know that. I have never met a partner who looks closely to ensure the hot water is exactly perfect. It's quick estimation, and onto the next drink.
Absolutely, but this dbag supervisor actually picked up the chai I was making and sternly told me, "Uh, it's supposed to be water up to here." I told him a manager had clarified it was only to the bottom of the logo--"the siren's eye". He got all weird about it and said to do it his way until we hear otherwise or some such... taking this job way too seriously. I'm trying my best though to get along with everyone, seeing as I'm on my 4th store... due to repeated issues I've had with supervisors. :/
I do not have the time to see if the hot water reaches her teats or her eyeballs. I personally put in half water and half milk. This is an improvement from "a splash of water" as I was taught.
If the customer wants it extra hot, better add more water. Because while the steamed milk caps off at 160 degrees for "x-hot" setting, hot water on tap comes out at roughly 201 degrees.

I couldn't find our recipe cards yesterday, but the store I worked in today had them, and... I was wrong. :p It actually uses the the plural "eyes". Though our recipes are from before the logo change, so it may not be in the exact same place. Might be the siren's boobies after all. ;) Still doesn't change the fact that the supervisor is a wanker.
I'm pretty sure it is literally up to the siren's eye(s). The position on the logo of each cup no matter what size puts her eyes right where half would be, if you consider the shape of the cup.
Also, I HATE when people are too lazy to add water to chai lattes. Or skip any part of a drink recipe for that matter. You are not the judge of what tastes good for each customer. I love chai lattes & I do not like them with all milk. It doesn't taste right without the water to me. Seriously if you are too lazy to follow simple drink recipes then keep your lazy **** off the bar. (I obviously deal with this a lot at my store. lol) /endrant
I'd say roughly around the boobs or siren's nose (around 5/8 water to 3/8 milk) is a nice rough area. I'm going to check tomorrow to see what Howard's minions say for sure.
^I actually didn't add water to most chai lattes today... due to the massive clusterf-ck around the only source of hot water (the coffee station, which was swamped all day because we were giving out free coffee) too many people behind the counter (5-7, in a kiosk sized store), too many customers on the other side... of which too many were as-holes, telling me "My flight is boarding RIGHT NOW!", on top of a deep cleaning project, training, and sh-t just generally hitting the fan... barely being able to move without running into somebody or something. I cut a lot of corners and decaffed anyone who even looked at me funny... and I don't feel bad about it at all. But otherwise... I agree about following recipes. :)
LOL I recently joined this forum & I know just the person I'm going to Decaf for the first time. I always make her Grande Soy Extra Hot Cappuccino to perfection without so much as a friendly glance or a 'Thank you' in return. Even when she walks in & I greet her & try to make her warm up to me I rarely even get a response. She does it to all of the girls at work but then chums it up with all of the guys. She's an attractive lady but she is a **** & most likely a woman hater. I'm going to enjoy this one!
Well, the visual merchandising guide we are supposed to follow (to make things look standardized) is called Siren's Eye, and it has a big honkin Starbucks logo in front, so when someone says Siren's Eye, that's what always comes to my mind. I still stand by my proportions, which is chai + hot water to cover the siren's boobies, and milk + foam the rest of the way up.
For some customers I know, I will steam the chai and the milk together, because it gives it a more nuanced flavor and a creamier texture (mmmm, chai flavored foam!) and that is how I've seen them do it at other "real" coffee shops. For those that don't deserve special treatment, I defer to the way Starbucks teaches us how to do their chais.

Y'all gotta stop thinking so much. As long as it's somewhere between the bottom and middle of the siren's eye, it's good enough. :] We're too busy for that kind of precision!
@ryuness for sure! I also recommend chai with hazelnut, chai with one pump mocha, and best of all, chai with honey.
