Every shift has it's pro's and cons for me.
I prefer the vibe of opens and workload, and having the rest of my day to myself afterwards. At my store, the morning rush is practically non existent so I am guaranteed ample time to do the deposit and ordering. However, the buses aren't running at 4am where I live, and I am too far to walk. So I have to take an expensive cab to get to work, and those add up.
Mid shifts are good because I don't have to prepare the deposit OR deal with the headache of closing down the store. However, I find I wind up working as a barista, because the other shifts at my store have HUGE egos, and I am the newest ss so they feel they have seniority and the right to override my authority, even if it is ME scheduled to be cash controller. It's hard to be constantly checking my ego. Talking to my SM doesn't seem to help either. Her advice is to "just ignore them". Deep down, I don't think she gets what's going on. It's frustrating. However, I know that if I were to full on confront my fellow ss's, they'd claim that they were only trying to help and that it's ME who is in the wrong for trying to coach them on their controlling behaviour. I just don't want to deal with that fallout.
Closes for me usually consist of stuffing my face and cleaning the store. It's a pretty laid back shift. I always come home with a bag full of markouts, which really helps out my grocery situation at home. I legitimately live off of markouts. Sounds like a good time, but I hate it! There is ALWAYS this same mob of people who come in around 9:30 and we have to strong arm out the door when it's closing time. I also hate the fact that most of my closing baristas are incompetent, and a few are unsympathetic to me catching my bus (they are walkers or have their own cars). It only runs every 45 minutes at that time of night. The store closes at 10. We are supposed to be out by 10:30. My bus also leaves at 10:30, so I am always pushing to get out at 10:20 at the latest. Those two or three baristas who either don't care/are so tight with money that they want the extra 10 minutes of pay deliberately slow things down and drag their feet. EVEN IF I DO HALF THEIR WORK THEY STILL FIND SOME WAY TO KILL TIME AND MAKE ME MISS MY BUS. I get home at 11:30 as it is when I CATCH my bus. Getting home past midnight when I technically am done at 10:30 is ridiculous!
So yeah....I hate everything :-p
