On MSN.com - 6,700 workers are going to "possibly" be laid off (700 of which are corporate). Hold on to your hats people, who knows who's next :-/
Hope that jet was worth it, Shitz. I mean, Shultz.

shoulda known that this was coming...I'm definitely keeping my ear to the ground.
When they delayed the release of our w-2's, I knew something fishy was going on!
the delay of our W-2's? Is that why I haven't gotten mine. I had no idea. They cannot do that... isn't it illegal???? I cannot believe they are getting rid of that many partners!!! I guess if you think about it... 300 stores, maybe with 15 partners each, would equal just about 6000 partners, right? Or are they getting rid of partners are stores that are staying open too?
@anniversary - yes, it is illegal. They can get fined for each W-2 that isn't on time. As for the workers, 6000 for the stores, 700 corporate people are getting fired = 6700 :-) And from what I've been told, 200 in the US, 100 internationally.
My manager heard it from the customers. He was LIVID! Howard put something on the portal, but it was deceptively put, like under some other title that didn't seem too important.
And if it isn't on time, you better believe I'll complain :-)
I know...It was deceptive! I heard about it on Leno and the News..my manager denied it, but the next day secretly posted the email on a hidden board at our store - not the barista needs to know section - I guess they dont want the baristas to know!
CustomersSuckatSbux, do you know what date is the legal deadline for W-2s? If mine is late ... and I'm waiting impatiently ... I'm going to be furious.
@Coffee Mart One of the posters on the other W2 thread said that they must be postmarked no later than 31 January however as that is a Saturday there is an extension to 2 February available to all companies.
Thanks, FarFlung.
Bella what email are you referring to?
Howie Boy sent out an email obliquely announcing the upcoming lay-offs. They're firing corporate folks, but they're also axing some baristas I think, since they're closing 300 stores. It mystifies me that they're actually firing the people who make the money for them in the first place. I hope they relocate as many as possible, but I sort of doubt it. And I wonder if they'll hire newbies to staff the 95 stores they plan to open this year.
Well, maybe i used the wrong term..It was on the portal, and my manager printed it out.
WHAT??? they plan on opening new stores????????????
Oh yes. 95. That's about 100 less than they opened last year. I read this online somewhere, but from a reputable media source - I wish I could remember which one. Some newspaper's online edition.
Yeah, I think that they are "trimming the fat" so to speak. Over the past several years they discarded many of their tried-and-true real estate policies, which were very cutting edge and relied on in-depth research of prospective locations. They started putting SBUX anywhere, and many of them were built in areas that were expected to be developed - but weren't, because of the real estate bubble that burst, and the ensuing economic crisis that the real estate crash served as a harbinger for ... well, anyway. Basically my theory is that they are closing stores in weak markets and opening new stores in strong markets, hopefully according to some sort of solid business plan. Howard is not my favorite person, but he is a brilliant businessman, I will give him that. If anyone can save Starbucks from crushing profit-loss and certain death, he might be that man. Although I really wonder why he's allowed so many silly-**** promos over the past year - they aren't helping.
1. Pike Place
2. Vivannos
3. Signature Hot Chocolate
4. Tea Lattes (er, mistos?)
None of these things have made us a busier store. People come for drip coffee, Pike or no Pike; they come for lattes; they come for fraps. They order SHCs and Vivannos for **** and giggles, but if those products didn't exist, I guaran-damn-tee that they would still order something! In other words, none of these new products are truly creating a new customer base. They're just bewildering the one that we already have.
Hey folks. You want news quick and from reliable sources go on to fidelity.com and once into your account (I hope you all have set one up) click onto the third index point and go to news. You'll get every piece of news that mentions starbucks in any way. I've picked up some interesting things there as well as significant news and all conference calls can be listened to there. They also list all large stock sale and purchases, that includes Howies, etc. Did you know that Jim MacDonalds were both over 3 mil.
bella, thats what I thought it was, just didn't want to miss anything :)
grandma, thanks Ill check it out!
When do you think they'll announce the store closings? I'm seriously biting my nails. I'm kind of thinking it will be ours this time around. We are one of the slowest stores in our district and there are 3, yes 3 other stores within a 3 mile radius of us. We have the best customer voice and were the first one built in that area, but somehow im not sure if that will save us.
One more question- will they be closing Kroger stores as well? Or does that not count?
The results announcement said 300 stores total 200 US and the rest overseas. It wasn't clearly stated but the way it was worded implied these were all company stores that were being closed. Nothing was said about licenced stores but there has been talk last year about SBux changing/withdrawing from some of their licencing agreements
