Atlanta LGBT supporters are planning a "Support Starbucks" day because we are supportive of gay rights.
Are you guys hearing about this in other markets and if so, are your SMs adjusting for staffing?

Awesome! I'll be looking forward to working that day :)
I'm pretty excited about this. I have four spare hours, so I told my SM I'd come and help through Blackout if necessary.
Weird. I haven't heard anything about it, and we're across the street from a major LBGT center.
I ate at Chick-Fil-A yesterday. I will be calling in on any day that is considered a LGBT "support day"... Just because I work for a liberal company, that doesn't mean I have no morals.
^ LOL
Oops, I almost forgot that bigots still exist.
@chaitea - Since your parents forgot to teach you to respect the opinions of others, I have some sage wisdom to get you through the decade unscathed. "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all."
Aw come on Chaitea, don't be like that.
Look, I don't support Gay Marriage either, but strictly that, I don't have anything against the people themselves. Chic-Fil-A has the same right to express their opinion that Starbucks or the anti or pro crowd has, no group should try to stamp the other's opinion in my book.
But in the end, it's just a job, working there that day shouldn't say I support or am against it, because it's just a job.
@ryuness - Since your parents forgot to teach you morals, I have some sage wisdom for YOU! "if you don't stand for something you'll fall for anything"
@vaylen I am strongly opposed to gay marriage. Although I have a decent respect for the people, I have a handful of LGBT partners in my store. Though I disagree with them, I like them as people. But I have a very hard time being passive about the issues.
Live and let live. If it isn't directly hurting YOU, don't worry about it! Remember, it was supposed to destroy society when women won the right to vote and black people were integrated. Im not saying society is great but it DID not cause the destruction of life as we know it. My thoughts on my personal opinion are not important. Regardless of what they are, I will always promote equal rights for all people. This IS the civil rights movement. :)
Saying that, I wonder if we are doing anything for it? It'll be interesting to work that day as I am in a highly conservative area. O.o
LETS NOT TURN THIS INTO A POLITICAL/MORAL/WHATEVER DEBATE PLEASE!! agree to disagree, move on, IHS isn't really the place for an argument of this nature.
Okay lulu I have to disagree, the argument that people are taking away the rights of Gay Americans is taking on water...at best. They have the same rights straight people and everyone else! They can marry, vote, say whatever they want, have guns, and anything stated in the bill of rights!
I agree with you, annabelle. I'm sorry that you feel threatened by this conversation, chaitea, but it has nothing to do with your personal opinions, beliefs, or morals. And it has nothing to do with you. Go take a deep breath. Take the day off if you want. And leave it at that.
I hope that we DO do something for this day, if they're hosting it for us. That's rather nice of them.
That's awesome! Love SBux for its support of gay rights!
i'll send postcards from my honeymoon fukcers
I remember back a few months ago, I had a customer tell me that she was happy that we were in support of gay marriage, and gay rights as a whole. It gave me warm fuzzies. I am a huge supporter (I have many gay friends, and I am bi, myself). I don't care what people believe. I just think that every one should have equal rights. It isn't fair to strip others of human rights. If you don't agree with me, that's fine.
On the support chick-fil-a day a lady came through on DT, ordered a venti frappuccion and tipped us $5 and said she was having her own support starbucks day since she "does not support those ******* at chick-fil-a!" I don't give a crap what you believe, and you're definitely welcome to tell me about it if you're gonna tip like that :)
Chaitea, please don't come in here on your moral high-horse. When a group is demonized, systematically discriminated against, and marginalized, and you join in to fuel the fire that the said group is under, you are not taking a moral high-road. You are supporting bigotry.
I'm not going to judge you for it, but please spare the "I have MORRAALLLS" spiel and just say it: Gay people making a life together, a life that has in recent years been considered somewhat unconventional, gives you the heebie-jeebies. This is not a moral issue. If it were, you would be doing something to improve the state of society, not aiding in the suppression of a specific group.
Lulu & Annabelle, I'm sorry for adding my two cents like this, but it drives me up the wall when people claim "morals" as an excuse to hate. It's just so backwards!
Personally, I would like to do something. I've been actively supporting the seventh via social networking, but I'd also like to come out with rainbow logo cups or something. haha
At first I thought chaitea was joking about it. But everyone's entitled to their own opinions on the internet. You're a partner and regardless of position, the real enemy is on the other side of the counter.
I'm not going to chastise chaitea for his/her views. I'm heterosexual and I support gay rights and gay marriage. I even attended the Pride Parade in NYC a month ago.
Any day that customers feel the need to "flash mob" Starbucks is a bad day.
I <3 gay marriage! And guess what? I have high morals.
Doesn't mean I want all kinds of people flocking to Starbucks all in one day :-( The Chick-fil-a down the road tripled their profits on "Support Chick-fil-a Day."
It's somewhat surprising to me that anyone employed with Starbucks can actually have issues with homosexuality. I mean, I knew even before I got the job that I was most likely going to be working with gay people and would be dealing with gay customers. To start spouting off how you don't accept homosexuality just makes you look like a bitter idiot, because in the end you should have known the company and the customer base you're working with.
Let's not get too heated. Remember, the enemy here is the siren and her cult.
That being said, Señor Cardgage's opinion is as follows: I don't care one way or another about anything anyone does so long as it doesn't harm others. Some fine lines there and grey areas (for instance, it's painful to me when obese people order venti MCCFs, yet my hands are unfortunately tied and I'm not paid or even allowed to try to talk them out of it), but honestly, other people's lives aren't my business. The only choices I can make are ones for myself, and I personally choose to drink a lot of beer to forget all of the horrible things I've seen.
That being said, I also don't judge groups of people- I judge on individual merit. If someone's a putz, it doesn't matter if they're black, white, gay, straight, or space lizard- they're still a putz.
Being gay or being supportive of it has nothing to do with morality. I wish people would stop hiding behind excuses like that and just admit they're discriminating fearful bigots. "Oh, I don't hate gay people personally, I just [lame cop-out excuse here]." Ugh.
That's awesome of the Atlanta LGBT community though. I hope it's a roaring success and the partners laugh all the way to the bank with their tips.
Starbucks doesn't need your support, theyre a frickin billion dollar corporation
Good on the community for their views. But know the difference between supporting gay rights and consumerism. Like derpaderp said, Starbucks doesn't need the support. Keep your politics, we baristas would rather take the tips.
*has hot gay sex all over this post*
As long as it's consensual and it's not in front of children, I'm down with that. Oh and use protection.
Well of course.
What I would like to happen is for all these people to come in and stuff tip jars with $5s and not order anything. In an ideal world I would also ride a unicorn to work, and my job would be opening envelopes filled with cash for me.
There are many ways to support LGBT rights but I think supporting Starbucks is a red herring. I had a big long explanation for it but I deleted it because I don't want to start an internet argument because I love this place and I love having all you anonymous faces that will understand when I tell you that someone wanted seven packets of honey in their latte. So I'm using too many words to say that I agree with Dry Sharpie.
