   LOL at anyone that comes online to b*tch about this job..seriously. Have you people ever had another food service job? We have it pretty easy. Yeah, I get it, asking people what size drink they want can get a bit repetitive but jeez you just gotta understand that just because we know the menu in and out doesn't mean every customer is familiar with our drinks/ how to order.

   If you have to run to an online forum in order to whine about a stupid customer then you don't belong in food/ customer service.

   Dear lord this site makes me fear for mankind. First world problems much? Like seriously, imagine how hard those starved people in Africa are laughing at us right now. This is a website for people to complain about their job at STARBUCKS. LOL. I get it..you're the edgy cool one that calls people "darling" and you come online to whine about your cushy job and all the excellent benefits you receive.

   I work in one of the scummiest areas imaginable. We have combination locks on our bathrooms. I deal with maniacs on a daily basis. We regularly call the police on customers who have fallen asleep or used drugs in out cafe, and yet, my Starbucks job is way better than ANY other food service job I've had. Go be a waiter/ waitress and work a double with no break and get back to me about how awful our job is.

   And yeah, I'm sure while you read this you're enjoying a nice freshly brewed cup of free coffee compliments of Howard, maybe on a paid vacation?

   My advice to you all: Grow a pair and accept that you have it pretty easy. If you can't deal with a job at Starbucks, then your future at other jobs is probably pretty grim.

   I'd like to think I have a fairly good perspective concerning my job and life situation. I am reminded on a daily basis about just how hard things can get... and not for some faceless strangers in Cambodia or wherever, but for people that I actually know, and care about.

   I come home every day and vent about my job, and my husband relates, consoles me, or laughs at my stories about crazy customers. And then he tells me about his day, where he watched someone get stabbed, or someone stabbed him, or he passed out from heat exhaustion working in 120 degrees (all day every day), being denied medical attention, or food, or how he wasn't given water for 2 days and had to resort to drinking from a toilet... or maybe about seeing the hopelessness and desperation in someone about to be executed.

   But he isn't dismissive of me... he doesn't laugh at my problems, or tell me to suck it up because he's got it worse. Of course he has it worse... but I am still allowed to vent about my frustrations. And that's all anyone is doing here.

   No one ever said that Starbucks is the worst hell on earth. And... someone has always got it worse. If only those poor Africans could imagine how hard things were for all the people that were starved, tortured, and literally worked to death in soviet prison camps! Well they wouldn't have anything to complain about then, would they?

   To be perfectly honest, I could care less about the job, the customers, the store or the company. I work my tail off every day only because of (some) of my fellow partners whom I adore. As a whole, there is a lot worse and there is a lot better. Aside from the low pay and ridiculous amount of work I have to do every evening, it can be a pretty fun job when you work with the right people.

    "Someone else always has it worse." What right do you people think you have for this kind of statement? You have no idea who I am. You don't know what I have to deal with. You don't know what I've DEALT with. So let's humor it.

    I'm mentally and physically handicapped. I'm diagnosed borderline, anxiety, ADHD, have an eating disorder that interferes with work, and celiac disease (I have several serious health issues). I'm a child abuse survivor (neglected, sexually, physically, and emotionally). I have almost no friends because I push everyone away, and was bullied for being the 'smart kid' whose parents didn't have enough to clothe them properly. I'm a perfectionist because of my past trauma, and so I have an extremely hard time getting by at work without faking it. I can't walk without problems with my knees. I have no family I can even turn to. And yes, I live in the ghetto. YOU KNOW WHERE OAKLAND IS, RIGHT? You know what it's like walking down the streets with mace in your hand, avoiding getting raped by another guy that asks you to gang back with him because your brother just got robbed at gunpoint, RIGHT?

    Boo hoo. It doesn't matter. So here's what does.

    There's work. What you need to do everything else with.
    What you know nothing about unless you are in another person's shoes... like their perspective on life and how that effects their work. Surprise, surprise.
    So I wake up, and do it again. And sometimes things bother me. I don't complain unless I seek a solution. Because, obviously, something isn't working, and I NEED TO WORK TO GET BY, so I HAVE to make it work. Once I find a solution, whether it be a way to deal with it, or a way to address the situation, I shut up. Just the fact that I can get up another day and smile is a miracle.

    Drink a cup of shut the **** up.

    P.S. I don't know what this 'darling' hipster nonsense is about, but I use it to admit great care concerning the person I am speaking to. Grow up.

    I'm too sleep deprived from back-to-back shifts to care anymore.

    It's not easy, but in all honesty if you do it with a good attitude and don't let crappy customers get to you...all in all it's a fairly good job with pretty great benefits. If you hate it so much, find something else to get paid for. Yes customers suck a lot of the time, but that's why you have awesome fellow baristas, to push that B button and talk our sh!t, try and tell me that's not enjoyable. We all know it is.

    Why do most of you have to be so mean? Stop letting such minute things get to you. It's a job, that's all. It's not our life. I like coming here to read the funny and ridiculous stuff customers do, and occasionally for advice on how to handle things because you all know how things work at Starbucks. But why treat me so hostile? I was just voicing my opinion. I'm sorry if my opinion upset anyone.

    Smiling barista: We're being so hostile towards you because you said the timeless "if you hate the job, quit." If you love the job so much, why don't you go marry Howard Schultz? Silly.

    I have worked in the food industry for almost 3 years...(oh **** has it really been THREE years?!) and Starbucks has been my favorite so far. The only thing I would change are the majority of my co-workers and management.

    Smiling Barista, i don't know if you have noticed but this site is specifically to complain about working at starbucks, hence the name...

    I do think we're being a bit harsh on Smiling Barista. It was 1pumpvanilla that was herping it up and saying 'lolo if you don't like it leave.'

    I do agree with smiles though in that, as I've said in previous posts, atleast for me what originally drew me here was the fact that I do like my job, or atleast the core of it, and what it used to be, and other than not being able to find another job currently, what keeps me showing up to work and doing the best job I can day in and day out are my coworkers and those very few awesome regulars. Plus, of course, money.

    I however also agree that the whole 'it could be worse' argument is some bullcrap. Yes, it could be worse, but as it's been stated previously, that doesn't discount the current suck. Especially considering as I noted on one of the notorious carmelfrapplover closed threads, the end of the fiscal year brings in some gnarly punishment for all of us in corporate's headfirst charge to bolden the bottom line- for me specifically, labor is shot all to hell, there's no coverage, we can't hire or transfer, our equipment's fubar, and we can't do anything about it. Meanwhile we have a sudden, gigantic swell in volume and sales and are doing double the business we did last year- double the business, but with five more partners and a lot more labor and, gee, equipment I was able to keep fully armed and fully operational due to different circumstances and a more veteran team.

    Somehow, it feels even worse than last year and the year before. Last year the company was riding on an upswing- this year they want even better results but are topping out, and what I just mentioned are effective ways to drive up profit. All that at the expense of us and the customer so a cabal of liches in Seattle can further line their mausoleums in gold.
