I can't believe it. Our store manger disappeared, This micro manager who's only going to be there another week or two (****. mngr) is the ONLY thing we have right now and she went on a total tirade and demoted a shift manger and now wants me to lose .75 cents a FREAKING HOUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check this.....she wants to change my pay from $7.50 an hour to $6.75 WTF?

I'm almost 35 years old and 25,000+ thousand in debt
I only wanted to work for SB for the health insurance, flex. schedule and the "partnership"....atmosphere. I have other jobs but no insurance.

My last paycheck, I made $284.00 FOR TWO WEEKS minus tips (which tips roughly came to $47)

The **** actually had the nerve to say that it was a "computer glitch" originally when I got hired at the original store.
WHAT'S ENTIRELY WORSE is that the Manager that hired me at the other store is totally backing her up! I remember when she hired me, VERBATIM...."you're so totally hired....
we're going to start you out at $7.50, is that OK?"
today when I called the old manager at my other store.... she said it "must have been a computer glitch.

WTF do I do?
Yesterday she (tyrant) had me deep clean the store on "non- coverage"
and today she actually had the nerve to DEMOTE ME?

Please help.....what do I do?

The new manager who is supposedly cool(and ****. manager who likes me fine) will be there soon.

I was also told by a shift leader TODAY that she doesn't have the authority to demote my pay.

Are they trying to run me off or WTF?

go to the regional manager. a lot of managers are "buddy buddy" with their district manager, so they are worth **** to go to for any of your problems. go above them.

call the hotline and report this. someone else might be able to help you with the number, i'm not sure off the top of my head. or, go to the website. the information is there.

make sure you have your old pay stub documenting you were making $7.50.

btw, what is the minimum wage in your area?

by law you should be getting minimum wage, not lower.

Min wage here is 6.55 now, but will be 7.25 on July, 24, 2009

I thought Starbucks ususally started you higher than .20 over min anyway?

True! But that ASM of yours has no authority to reduce your hourly wage. That's totally illegal. You signed a contract to work for x amount of dollars per hour; to change that is a breach of contract.
Don't call your DM- like theoneyoulovetohate says, it probably won't be effective because they're partial. Call HR and Partner Contact Ctr. They're the only ones who can help you with the least amount of ****.

Call the Business conduct line...they are just trying to screw you, don't let them, they can't hire you and tell you your being paid a certain amount, then cut it back a few weeks later.

If you have one paycheck with the higher amount, then one with the lower amount you should contact your states Labor Department.

Oh boy THERE'S WAY more **** to add to this since I first posted.

I called the HR....she won't get back to me. Partner contact center doesn't really seem to know what to say but hang in there until she leaves.
I worked with the tyrant- fill in manager again on Thursday and had to close with her tonight.

She pulled me in the back on Thursday and said that she talked with the DM and that I was under suspension and review for 30 days. I would be able to keep my pay; however, if I did not EXCEED expectations by the end of the suspension, my pay would be demoted.
AND I ABSOLUTELY COULD NOT DISCUSS THIS WITH ANYONE!

I said whatever it takes, whatever you want me to do to catch up.....I had some REALLY bad training so, just tell me what to do.

She explained how she was a confident person and so on and so forth and I was not.
I'm like **** you don't even freaking KNOW me....****. I've spent a total of several minutes talking with you my entire life.
But I just bit my tongue and said OK.
What a **** sell out I am.....
Just for health insurance dammit!

So, today (we're closing)....everything that goes wrong on the shift is suddenly my fault even at the stations and slides I'm not working.

I did **** up bad once and supposedly gave a woman more change than she was supposed to have; although, she came inside to store and returned it (to the crazy psycho manager).....still I think the woman was wrong anyway. The Mngr pulls me aside and says, your register was short the other day $20 bucks (which is weird b/c she's not been on any shifts when I am closing my till.....even though I know she can find that info out anyway)....."there's no second chance that's grounds for INSTANT TERMINATION! INSTANT TERMINATION!", she said and looked at me like I am some total piece of ****.

I apologized, said I've been a manager and that is unacceptable.

The rest of the night she was vile and treated me like I was a retard.
Even the other employees were shocked at her behavior towards me.
Like she was speaking to a dog.

All I've basically done 95% of the time that I've worked there is register and dishes.
I got put on DT tonight for like the 3rd or 4th time ever INCLUDING training and was doing pretty darn good OR SO I THOUGHT.

What's to stop her from just taking $20bucks from my till and getting me fired.
I've worked tons of jobs with registers.....I count the cash back properly. I'm never short or over beyond a few wooden nickles (cents) WTF???????

This woman is a psychopath!

I think if she outright fires me, I'm gonna call her on it and tell her I know it's personal and if she really cared she'd make sure I was trained right. Oh and FU*&% YOU YOU MOTHER&(&*(*)*) GOD((&@#&$)@#)#@*$#) **** and walk the **** out!
Perhaps I should dump a disgusting strawberries and creme frapp. on her head on the way out....
would that be considered assault?

Is there surveillance at your store? If she did anything shady, it would be recorded. Keep calling the partner contact center and filing reports to build a case to protect yourself and so you'll have a record of her behaviour. Name witnesses too. The BCH will interview them.
What state are you in? Usually the labor board has a free legal counsel helpline/center.
I feel so bad for you Soygurrl! How know how soulless tyrannical managers can be and powerless they try to make you feel. Everybody makes mistakes, that's how we learn. But that cow-herpers-**** is not treating you with respect and dignity for sure.

Thanks darkroast! I think that some of the slime from the floor drains mixed in with some **** might be more appropriate :P

Supposedly there is surveillance; however, they have to pay someone to come in and review all the tapes. Don't think that will work in my favor.

I still can't believe the total lack of human compassion on her part.

I read stories like this and I am so thankful for being at a mostly drama-free store. Even though I hate the company/work, I do like my SM and the shifts I work with are cool, as are most of the other baristas.

Soygirrl, you really should look into speaking with someone from the State Labor Department. See what they say. I'm not sure you can be forced to take a pay cut involuntarily (you mentioned you weren't able to discuss with anyone). If there is something to this, and you could file suit or something, I bet they'd back off. If nothing else, and I mentioned this somewhere else (because it seems to work well where I'm from), go to your local news station and let them know this is happening. They eat that kind of **** up, and if Starbucks were under fire well, they hate bad press so again, they'd probably back off.

Of course you might get fired anyway, but you could shine light on something many others are probably going through as well.

The only time I can think of a pay decrease is if you moved to a different state where the cost of living is lower. I was told that if I moved to a different state that I would have to take a cut. It would not have been much. But there is no way they can start you at one pay and then decide they made a mistake and cut you. It is truly their mistake and they have to eat that cost. There are just too many dirty players in this company and too many people that are willing to throw someone under the bus just to justify their own actions.
Do whatever possible to make it work for yourself because nobody else will!!!!!

Oh, free.at.last reminded me of something. At least in my state, the thing I said earlier about an 'agreed' paycut, like say you were hired at x-dollars as a SHIFT, then decided to step down to a barista, THEN they could cut your pay. But I don't believe they can just say "you were a barista hired at x-dollars, and you're still a barista but now you're dropping down to y-dollars".

Doesn't work like that. Not here, at least.

If the company were allowed to do that...then they would not have to worry about firing or (finding reasons to fire) partners that are making more...like a lot of my co-partners from my store and other surrounding stores that are being weeded out. Guess what? They are all partners that have worked for the company for 5 years or more.
Imagine if they could just go to a partner and say..."I understand you make $11.00 per hour but times have changed and the economy is pretty bad...I am going to have to decrease your pay to $9.50."
It does not matter how long you have been with the company...5 years or 5 weeks...it is just wrong.
Maybe someone should ask IloveSBUX...They seem to have all the answers to our HR related questions...haha
