A lot of people on here seem to find it easy to quit, understandably so. But how do you do it when your store is short staffed, you're a shift, and great friendships made? I have another job that I love (so far) and I'm still at the bux. But I don't know how long I'll be able to carry on with both (full time), plus college in the fall (if I'm able).
So, my question is, with all the above in consideration, how do you do it?
just think of the customers
Simple! Just wait until the next round of layoffs & the company will quit on you. As an added benefit, you'll get to enjoy the same three weeks of severance pay that so many of your "partners" got to enjoy today!!!
Don't ever live for other people. That's not gonna do you any good. Think of yourself.

Think of it this way, the company doesn't care about you, they only think about themselves. By you delaying the quitting process, you're only making them more money.
fight the system
In my previous job experience I've learned not to think of other's feelings when you're dealing with quitting. It may put them in a weird spot for awhile, but they will all be making more money with the hours. Also, this is where your boss should step in. It's part of being a boss. It's not your responsibility to hire more people for the store.
all y'all are goin about this the wrong way,...
here's what you do,...you leave a post it note on the door that says 'i'm sorry, i cant, dont hate me'
then,...after everything dies down, and you pad your pockets,...you load everyone up, take them to the local dive bar, and buy the first four rounds

I think that your desire to not screw over the friends you've made at SB is commendable; however, you really DO need to do what is in YOUR best interest. If you feel that kind of loyalty to the co-workers who have become your friends, I'm sure that they also feel that way towards you...and consequently, would understand the need for your departure. I would tell them about your situation and submit your notice (in this economy, it's likely that the store could hire someone fairly quickly). Would the new person be able to replace you and your experience? No...mostly likely, there would be a significant learning curve that would take some time to overcome. However, no one else is going to look out for your best interests if you don't. Do what is best for you.
By the way, you sound like a very "stand up" person - I think that quality will serve you well in your new job and whatever other future endeavors you tackle. Best of luck to you!
Simple, if they are truly your friend than chances are they would still hang out with you even if you do not work for The Bucks.
just quit. it's not your problem the store is under staffed. sometimes you have to do things for yourself. it's wicked nerve racking to do so, i understand that. but if it's no longer a "home" for you, then get your things and run!
but i do agree with waiting for a lay off. that is, if your store will be laying off any time soon. you can collect severance AND unemployment. [best thing i ever did. sat on my **** at home while starbucks paid ME! haha]
oh and.. if you want to quit and use this job as a reference or on your resume -- do it the "right" way! 2 weeks notice, in letter form. in this economy people need all the good feedback they can get!

ETA: Remember that the company doesn't give a **** about the relationships built when they "separate" and/or lay people off.
Easy. Just quit. There are better jobs out there and you will make other great friendships on the job. The staffing issues are the manager's problem not yours. He is not doing his job properly if you feel that you should quit, despite your frienships and concerns. Your manager has failed you whether he/she meant to or not. Quit and move on. If they were more competent at their jobs you wouldn't be even consider working for anyone but SBUX. Take them aside and tell them you are putting in your 2 weeks. Don't make up a reason, that would just add insult to injury. Your manager FAILED!
