I think next time I go to McDonalds I am going to ask for my fries to be exactly 170 degrees and for an extra meat patty (but refuse to pay extra for it) on my burger. Then I am going to request the exact number of ice cubes that my drink should have, mix it with a squirt of something else and asked for it to be shaken/not stirred. As a finale I will ask to sample an apple pie (again without paying) and demand that the hot fudge in my sundae be layered (a little ice cream then little chocolate, etc., etc.) They would 1) kick me out, 2) look at me like I am a moron or 3) laugh their bleeping heads off at me. Only at Starbucks...Just say yes.

Is there any truth to the new rumor that some of the troops in Iraq contacted Starbucks and asked them to send some of their beans out to them... I heard this on my local radio talk show. Starbucks replied that they would not send any beans becuase they don't support the war. So don't support the war but support the troops!

Can anyone explain to me where the "MELTED" carmel macchiato came from??? as much as the standards are bs...for instance who actually puts h20 in there chai...it frustrates me hearing people ask if they wanted it melted or layered anytime someone orders the drink iced!!! as far as i was told when i started working with the "company" almost 2 yrs ago the macchiato meant "poured" over so isnt that the whole concept on the drink which body can pronounce, isnt that annoying too?!?!? people now want "layered" carmel fraps!!! i put carmel in the inside of this guys cup to make it "layerd" and when i handed it to him he looked at me like hello dumb @$$!! he wanted me to pour a lil frap then top it with carmel more frap then caremel...hello does it look like i have the time to do that....then if i would have charged him for the extra he would have complained....i just transfred to this store and this guy treated me like i knew nothing b.c HE had never seen me work there...or the people who just ignore you and tell a "regular" parnter they will have there usual like i am a dead weight standing there and dont know anything just b.c they have no idea who i am!!!well if you want to continue getiing "your usual" treat me with some respect b/c the next time i am on bar when you come in it wont be the "usual"...how long is milk good, wait i need to resteam that for you, it needs to be a little hotter, atually burnt!! People has there head so far up there when will the actually realize the sun isnt shining out of there @$$!!!!!

I think that every district should catch the green flu every once in awhile to remind the management that the partners are the real ground soldiers who keep store operations running smoothly.

I work at a subx in the Seattle area. And you think everyone else has it bad living up to the standards and ledgendary service, we have it worse here. Living so close to corporate, everyone is paranoid about being spotted by corporate,so we have to go above and beyond the annoying standards on the off chance that a "mystery shopper" or someone from corporate popping in and catching someone in the act of doing something that is "innapropriate". I've only been with the company for a couple of months, and at first I was really excited to begin working, and I was going to be the best barista ever, now I dread going into work everyday and dealing with customers. I work in a very, very rich area, so many of our customers feel they can treat you like crap because they are rich, and you are doing something for me. Which means I have to put up with people who yell at you for not knowing thier drink automatically, people who can't wait two minutes for anything, and us having to smile graciously and say thank you. I don't know where most of these people come from, but there is only so much crap I am willing to take. I only have three more months before I head of to England, so I'm trying to grin and bear it. I will say however, that the Seattle area, is probably the closest to the "caring about the partners" as anyone will get. We have some very caring DM's and SM's who know much of this is BS, and will not put up with much of the crap with corporate and the customers (within given means of course). The partners around here are treated to district picnics, and of course the "starbucks experience class" (which really isn't a treat). They only reason I'm sticking around are the discounts that come from everywhere, thanks to sbux merging and taking over the world. Alot of people aren't aware, but there's discounts with bn.com (starbucks has it's own storefront there, were everything goes from 15-50% off). The partnership with t-mobile, which means my cell phone bill is only $20 a month, and not anywhere from 45-50 like it used to be. My big pet peeves though are the markouts, especially the sandwiches. Starbucks donates all of it's pasties at the end of the day to food banks, but the $6.00 sanwiches that go unsold are tossed out,and we aren't allowed to take them. I've been standing up for eight hours and I can't have a sanwich that will go in the trash? or better yet, give it to the homless people arount? I've worked at two stores so far (and covered shifts at many others) and at my old store, we would take the sandwiches, mark things out as a sample, and eat it if we haven't tried it. I've also heard stories from other SS who give the sandwiches to the homless after cloing because they're just going to throw them in the trash anyway. I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into at first, but I now realized what a huge mistake it was, and to think I was actually going to transfer to England, so I can work there. I'll pass.

Did anyone here to go to the latest open forum? Mine was up at the UMASS Boston campus. It sucked!!!! We had food from an Ethiopian restauran and it was tasteless. My partners and I (there were 10) decided to drive down the road and take the T into the city and some women tried to stop us from going to say that some VP would be speaking and as soon as she walked away we bounced out of there and spent a lovely afternoon getting drunk instead!

Drive Thru at Starbucks is the most worthless thing in the world....its like canada playing baseball :) STARBUCKS CT- that is the coolest thing ever. I feel that i dont get that much respect also. Alot of my partners give it to me, and I to them...but some of shifts i think dont realize we exist. Oh well....i guess itll work out, there is worse stuff to worry about. Peace

just stopped in out of curiosity........I think I will take a look. I don't particularly dislike the taste of Starbucks coffee, I just don't think spending $4 of a cup is intellegent accounting....if someone else is buying......go for it. Actually, I am more of a water snob.............

Wow...what a trip. I understand how you all can be so jaded by Starbucks, but if you hate it so much don't patron their business. And for you disgruntled partners...find a new job. I am a barista at Starbucks and for the most part it has been a wonderful experience. Sure there are some ugly acting customers, but why let them wanting you to remake their double tall 135 degree extra whip mocha bug you? I know it can be stressful at times, trust me...DRIVE THRU IS AWFUL(!!!!) and yeah, everyone has one or two fellow partners that annoy the living snot out of them, but don't let that be the consuming factor of your day.

Well. The partners in my store decided one day that we would all simply call out sick. We chose a day when only 6 partners were working. We called in sick but had called other stores to cover our shift. The SM was working with a completely new staff that didn't know where anything was. We used the wireless network to actually broadcast a live feed from the store so we could see what was happening. It was so funny because everybody was running into each other. Our SM got the message that the "green flu" happens every once in a while and sometimes the cure is some respect.

DESERT FLAME: Good question on SM vacation time! My old manager takes one every other month. IHATETHEMERMAID: WHY OH WHY does star*ux have a drive-thru? That is soooo tempting to "spill" hot coffee on a rude customer. And with all the calories in those drinks they do need the exercise, so they should have to walk inside and get the drink. SO CAL SHIFT: Is that why you can't take marked out pastries? Like someone would stand on a corner and try to sell them?! It's so stupid because you could sell your weekly markout.

I want to get out of Starbucks so bad! I have been there for almost three years, and they have screwed me over so many times, it's unbelievable! I can totally relate to everyone here. I had a problem with my manager lying about my work ethic and when I called Human Resources, they sided with my manager. What the heck is HR for if they aren't going to believe the partners when I had proof? Anyway, Starbucks contradicts everything they want us to do. I am so sick of the politics. My DM came in for our store's MSR and my manager didn't schedule enough coverage. I was the SS on duty so two other partners and I were running our butts of to keep up with everything. We did a pretty good job considering the DM sent one of the girls home because her pants were the wrong shade of kahki. (Why don't they just buy us uniforms if they are so dang picky and have so much revenue?) All our DM and SM could do was pick apart what we did wrong. Nothing positive was said at all! I could care less how well I do now.

I like Starbucks "bitter" coffee. I think it is costly. I don't know about tipping, after I pay four bucks for a cup of coffee. I work in a neighborhood where people can't pay their rent, but their is a line around the building at Starbucks. Your answers are pretty darn funny.

I hate Starbucks too! The coffee is over priced and over cooked. Nothing like the smell of burnt coffee in the morning. The other this is wireless, like we all nothing better to do than lay around a coffeehouse all day. Give me a break!

I am surprised to read so many entries where people refer to their eyes being opened and they relized what a crappy place of employment is. How do you not know what you are getting into? Every company needs to make their employment opportunities seem appealing. Just do some research and organize your priorities. When looking for a job it is important to you to receive unlimited free calories with no nutritional value? Are you interested in having an unpredictable source of income depending on the whim of a manager? Is your greatest desire to clean the most revolting areas of a business on your hands and knees without proper supplies? Then starbucks is for you along with almost every other customer service based low skill level job.

Overrated - You mention that your SM took vacations every two months. Just how much vacation time does a SM get??? It seems like my old SM went on like four vacations in the nine months a was a slave to the mighty *_uck. I went in the other day to get some beans ground. My old store was a sty. A light was out in the pastry case that has been that way for at least two months. Empty trays were left in the case. There was trash everywhere. When I was a SS, a spin was done every 10 minutes and I kept up on the pastry case. You can't sell it if its not out for the customer to see. But warning all you newbies, keep your mouth shut. The green mermaid does not want to hear what is on your mind, unless you like to have your hours cut or asked to go on an LOA to get you out of the store. Whew. Sorry, but feel much better.

Bob Marley? How busy is your store that you make 70k a year? Last I heard they were "rolling back the prices" of retail managers.

jb: where i'm at, we make anywhere between 1.00 - 1.60/hour in tips. so if you're working 40 hours/week, you get about $50.00. but that's rare. it's usually right around the same amount in tips as the hours we work. but that's okay, because we get taxed on it! >:/ and i agree with bob marley about *$ being way different now. it's coming up on seven years, and i've been a shift for about 5 1/2 of it. i have told my 'big importants' that i'm not interested in going any further because "i have better things to do with my life than spend it at starbucks. no offense to those who are management." they seem okay with that, but probably only because they need a few strong ss and baristas to run the stores well. if they only had sms and asms, nothing would get done. my sm does a heck of a lot more than my asm, who apparently believes it's part of her job description to be rude, disrespectful, sarcastic (not in a cool way), and unpleasant. not to mention sitting in the back when we're busy, not being trained well, saying others (me) 'can't handle the pressure on bar' when i've been on bar for four solid hours, alone, making upwards of 50-75 drinks in a half hour (including frappuccinos, cups of tea, brewing coffee when it's out, getting pastries, etc.), and helping brand-new partners manage the customers and register. this is after she's gone to the bank for 45 minutes to an hour (we time her whenever she goes), while it takes the rest of us 20 minutes, and not telling us she's taking her lunch until we ask for help. wow. got a tad carried away there... but had to rant -- she's making me a bit more crazy and homocidal than i usually am. i've begun to feel that i wasn't so much conceived as i was percolated... my dad put his grinds into my mom's filter, and boom! a barista was brewed. :)

oh yeah another rant: "what-they dont charge me extra for that. i get it like that all the time and i always pay this price!" ...one lady asked me to put enough caramel for 5 people in her iced caramel machiato and when i charged her for extra caramel she called me a fag. i dropped the cup in front of her and took my 10.
