i'm a barista whose so miserable at work it ain't funny! the only reason i will stay for the next while is b/c of my rad coworkers, as for my boss, she's the most backstabbing, manipulative, arrogant freak i've ever worked for!!!! the only thing i've gained from starbucks is the confirmation that i'm waayyyy to good to waste away my life serving ungrateful, rude, posh wanna-be customers who are too ignorant and stupid to realize when they're getting ripped off!! i'm so sick of gettting shit all recognition and letting my boss take all the credit when all she does is play victim, whine about how stressed out and "sick" she feels, how ungrateful the company is and screws off on vacations every 2 months which she clearly doesn't deserve b/c she can't manage a store properly enough to ease her supposed "STRESS"!!!! starbucks is a JOKE, it's NOT the best place to work b/c its not any better than MCDONALDS, its not all its cracked up to be, the management, and DM's don't know shit all about how to run a business or how to create a high workplace moral, and when it comes down to it, none of them give a flying f@$k so why should it's employees!!?????????

Ok. I've been with this company for years and years--starting as a barista and then moving quickly to a store manager. Ive been a store manager ever since. Over the years, this company certainly has changed. Where we are now is unbelievably different than where we were years ago. Dont kid yourselves--this company cares nothing about the employees as a whole. If you are not one of the "up-and-comers", the company will crap on youquicker than anything. And certainly dont question upper management. Howard gloated about how that store in NY "decided" to not go union? What a joke! Howard has seen the results of unionizing in Canada and could not afford to keep the gravy flowing to the RDO-level and above if union(s) got ahold of the injustices occuring in the U.S.A. Oh--dont go to your supervisor and tell them you are not interested in moving on. This is certain death to you if you are at the ASM level or above. And, dont expect any longevity from this company. The emails that I have read in here about SMs 5+ years being "forced" out because they are making too much money is absolutely true. I have been placed in that position too many times. Last year I made 70k and my DM placed 3 write-ups in my file within a 6-month period. (and I had never been written up before!) I have tried every avenue available to partners to report inappropriate behaviors/decisions by superiors. Dont bother. They dont work. Nobody listens. And you will certainly be singled-out by your supervisors and they will come after you with both barrels blazing. Long story short. After about the 7 year mark a couple of years ago, I think I stayed with this company because of the fond memories I held onto from my beginnings. I think now I stay because of the money and the satisfaction that I get from seeing my supervisors trying to fire me for nothing. and because of the lawsuit that will follow when they think they have succeeded. Whoever is reading this, take this last point to heart. If you plan on staying with this company for any length of time, keep quiet, do your job, and draw as little attention to yourself as possible. You will see inconsistencies every minute of every day. Ignore them. If you are a SM reading this--do what they ask of you. DO NOT CHALLENGE ANYTHING! They will say they welcome comments/concerns. They will mention that this is a "safe working environment". IT IS NOT! They will crap on you sooner or later. If you are good or tenured, they will take longer to get their ducks in a row. Mark my word, though. They will come after you.

To Jen: Advertise your place at both campuses. Put and ad in the school papers. Make up a coupon to pass out for a free small beverage. If you have internet set up in the cafe let it be known so students know they can go hang out there.

Mike, you sad sad little boy . . . go back to school and take an econ class. Do you honestly expect a raise when you break the store you work in? Your store is given a budget, and they can't spend it on raises if they're fixing a new piece every week. On the larger scale, the company cannot afford to give the benifits and payment you feel you deserve when you damage your eqipment. I hate to break it to you, but keep a large operation like that running, even with the prices they ask, is hard to do! YOU are the one taking the money from the customer, and rather than allowing it to go into your pocket you re-inforce and propegate the evil that seems to be *$'s . . . I'm not a fan of the company, but you need to grow up and educate yourself! If you actually did your job, maybe you could have gotten that raise, or made your coffee shop a real coffee shop (as real as a corporately owned shop can be) and maybe you could have even help to inprove your living standards within your community . . all form simply growing up and contributing to society in the manner you are (or were) being payed to . . .hmmmm novel idea? WAKE UP kid . . life is real, and the balance is delicate . .we all have a responsibility to the world we live in.

Yes, Starbucks is overrated. Yes, Starbuck's coffee is bitter. Yes, Starbucks is expensive. Yes, Starbucks is everywhere. Why?! Because modern society is fixated on logos and corporations. Customers flock to Starbucks as they flock to McDonald's. They know the coffee is consistent no matter where they go or when they go. Lattes will taste the same day in Seattle as they do in New York. They will taste the same Monday morning as they did Saturday afternoon. Starbucks gives the customer what it thinks it wants: coffee. But in reality, Starbucks does not use real coffee in their mixed, whipped drinks. They use coffee flavouring. This keeps customers coming back. Starbucks adds caffeine to their coffee to get the extra boost of caffeine to its customers, but this addition takes away the taste. Those who are true connoisseurs of coffee know better. The general public does not. Bur relief is in sight for the ignorant, Starbucks will tell them what they want.

Hi! Are you all aware that Sbux is planning on increasing its allready expensive prices soon?!!! I feel so ashamed of serving a tall (small) cup of coffee for $2.00 bucks! Starbucks is too damn expensive and over-rated! People, start making coffee at home! My Sbux-addicted boyfriend will have to drink home made skim lattes from now on! ;)

A Little Lesson in Drive-Thru Etiquette: 1. If I say, “I will be with you in a minute,” it means that I am juggling 3 caramel frappucinos, one with no whip, a vanilla non-fat latte, a blueberry muffin, dirty dishes, and a grumbling customer. DO NOT begin ordering –it will not make me process your drink any faster. 2. If you drive diesel or pull a trailer, park your land-yacht and come inside. You need the exercise, and I need my hearing. 3. Do not shout at me. I can hear you just fine, and you look incredibly stupid sticking your head out the window and spitting at the menu. 4. I am not a dumpster. I do not want to throw away your disgusting, greasy burgers nor your crabby kid’s diapers. Besides, it is against health code. 5. If you have more than 3 drinks, come inside or I will charge you a processing fee for holding up my line. 6. Just because I wear a head-set does not mean that I am of any lower intelligence level, and mind you remember —I handle your food. So, the next time you pull up to the window, be respectful or lest I say . . . sneeze muffin!

I couldn't agree more. Starbucks' coffee is bitter, expensive, and worst of all, EVERYWHERE. I have a couple of places I like to go in South Georgia, and I stick to them. I like your site.

Siren-You always make me laugh...its good to see you back again! We just got a new manager, and 2 new shifts. They do nothing. No lies. Yesterday they took about 4 smoke breaks...at least 15 minutes long, while we slave in the front. They are worthless at their jobs, and the new manager hates me already. At least I know that my fellow partners agree with me. Anyways, take it easy yall!

HERR: Did you have the same DM with all four managers? Maybe the DM or gossip mongers at your store are talking about you behind your back and are causing that. How many people work at your store? With a "crazy" availability you should be able to get at least 20 hours a week. When my manager came she hired three people to add to the staff she met there, and since some of those who she hired were family, she rotated the number of hours everyone worked. So for one week, you would work 22 hours and another person would work 12 hours and then vice versa the next week. And this was with baristas and shifts! There was also a person who didn't contribute to anything and whenever there was a shift to be picked up at another store, the manager sent her everytime. She eventually transferred her there. So maybe that's what they're trying to do to you. Ask your co-workers if you can get one of their shifts because your manager hasn't scheduled you to work for 2 weeks. GLENNROY: The reasons for those shifts being fired are ridiculous! I think if you're unable to work but you get your shift covered, no one should complain. We changed shifts all the time without asking the manager first. It does seem to be the case for a manager to promote someone who's been with the company for a shorter period of time or to not treat the others with the same amount of respect because they would prefer to pay someone $7.50/hr. vs. $8.50/hr. Since the people where I live usually stay with a job for ONE year, they know the raise will never go much higher. Also, managers in all jobs always talk about rules and regulations, but they only apply them to some people and not everyone. TEE: Are corporate stores selling food now? I know the one in college sold paninis and cookies that weren't hard as a rock. They should let you guys get the leftovers instead of just wasting it by throwing them away. There's someone at my store who takes the gift bags to carry all the morning markouts with to take home, and she's never been written up for it. We used to mark things out all the time until people started slacking with storing the food. starsux is a coffee shop and they need to focus on the coffee and not on food. Have you had their bagels? The bagels are hard as rocks!!

I hate Starbucks because their hiring and firing practices are unethical.  When I read their "socially responsible" report to investors, I wanted to throw up.  When was the last time a person with a disability or a person of color waited on you when you paid $5 for a cup of coffee?

Jen, I know what you're going through once having my own shop. The difference with me that SBUX was there before me. Can you win? That depends on the loyalty of your customers, the quality of your product and customer service. You will have no problem providing better customer service even though SBUX may turn out the drinks faster. All the complaints from previous and current SBUX employees about customers makes me feel fortunate because I never had those problems. There is a large anti-SBUX group out there, and you will get some of their customers, but will they take yours? They intentionally saturate the market to get you out. Try to be different, not just better. You have the ability to adjust to things and make changes must faster than the corporate red tape they go through. Remember this too, not every SBUX does well. If you don't make it, keep your head up high, you accomplished so much more than most people regardless of whatever the outcome is. It's funny, because now when I see people with a SBUX drink, I almost feel sorry for them not knowing the truth and settling for such a poorly produced product. Here is another way to look at it. Most if not all SBUX employees have never had their own shop and will always wonder what you and I already know. They go to work everyday and though it may look as if they really enjoy their jobs, you know they are all miserable, but can pay their bills while they're looking for a new job.

Hi everyone, I work at starbucks and am wondering.... are we all suppose to squirt that kay 5 detergent solution into any random area inside the dishwasher when we want to sanitize things? Also, are we supposed to leave the dishwasher on ALL the time? I hate the fact that steam escapes from the dishwasher and makes the area behind the counter more hot and humid.

Does Starbucks live up to the principle of its Mission Statement? Including: Treat everyone with dignity and respect? Contribute positive to communities and the environment? Do they really follow these principles, or does Starbucks just say they strive to?

I am in the same boat as Jen. I also own a cute small coffee shop and was informed that SB is opening just a few doors down from me AND they are under construction for 2 more within 1 mile. All of my local regulars are giving me wonderful support, but 75% of my business comes from tourists that pull off of the highway looking for coffee. I have been trying to create awareness of the "Corporate Giant" shutting down the "All-American Dream" and I think I am being heard although,I would love to have some other new ideas and suggestions! Thank You to everyone who supports your local coffee shop! THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK CORPORATE COFFEE!!!!!
