I have a problem with the sanitizing machine. We all have to squirt some kind of detergent into that machine. the problem is... when that machine is on... detergent and steam gets out of the sanitizer even when it is closed and it is hurting my eyes. like you all say.. time to quit.

I am so PISSED!!! I know i am being ripped off on my tips and I know it. I've been keeping a close attention on the hours worked by some of the more senior partners. And what i notice is that they always get almost twice as much tips as me per hour worked! Is this standard practice? I also know that I am being screwed for my hours. For example, if i leave at 3:20 instead of 3:15 because it was busy.... some evil shift supervisor will go to the computer and edit my time of leaving to 3:15. This is such bullshit. i am being ripped off for my time and tips. I am leaving that starf*cks soon and that's for sure!

i used to work for starbucks uk, before that i worked for a different coffee bar which was taken over. the difference is amazing, pointless cheaklist after pointless cheaklist, crap coffee that is over roasted so we could half the amout used per cup, way too many managers no staff. i stuck it out for about another year. i have also kept close ties with a few members of staff: and they have begun a policy of 'managing out' (ie making life miserable and evntually sacking) anyone who wont work 50+ hour weeks on minimum wage, so suprise most of the starbucks i see now are full of student from abroad with 'language difficulties'.its lame

Dear NYC COFFEE DRINKER, as a Barista that have covered shifts in the location you mentioned, I have to say to the defense of some of my friends that work there, that they do ask for your name or initials to write in the cup in that location(it's a strongly enforced rule! to the point of annoyance!!!)If you don't get your drink, ask the Barista if he/she is making it! According to my sources only 6 partners there are experienced enough to make your drinks! Everybody else is new or "snobs-wannabe-coffee-gurus"! So why don't you go to any other of the Sbux around that area instead. A friend of mine tells some customers to go to the Sbux where I work at since it's less busy than the one you mentioned! By the way NYC COFFEE DRINKER, you could always ask for a refund, or for the Barista to make your drink over, or a "recovery coupon". If you don't like the service in that location don't go there. If I knew who you are I would tell you to come to the Sbux where I work at and have a drink on me. Or better yet, why not write a personal letter to Seattle directly, and get even more compensation for what they did to you on that location. Only personal letters with exact date & deatails (not e-mails) get compensation back! Like coupons, toys, cups, and the Store Manager apologies. I heard from the same friend it has happened before there and people get compensation for it! Or you should call the Store Manager and say "YOU'RE FIRED!" Ha,ha,ha! ;) Sincerely, Bunny from an Sbux that doesn't plays elevator music, like where my friend works at, Ha,ha,ha! My Sbux plays cool music from... Ha,ha,ha! Thanks! ;) I LOVE NEW YORK!!! ;)

to burned out: i too go in and work my butt off and try to "step it up". after my review last fall I vowed i would do whatever i can to not get written up and to prove that i can be a SS. well when i had my next review i got the full raise and what not but then i was told that she hadn't considered me for SS because i don't have 5 stars in legendary serviceand that what the DM wants! mind you it was the only reason! she ended up choosing another girl who is a single mom to be a SS but she is lazy and we were all aware of this minus my SM. She would be on bar and someone would be in frap hell and she would stay at bar wiping the counter. She never restocks and only now that she is SS she actually will go and make extra ice coffee and frap base. I would come into work restock everything, make extra everything, keep up on the dishes(like today I did all the dishes, no one even made an attempt to do a load) and I know that no matter what no matter how well I make a drink, keeping things stock, helping my "partners" out by cleaning up after them it won't matter since my SM has forgotten about me. and it doesn't help when all the new partners come in and they all thought I was a SS since I knew so much! As for clean sweep/new daily duty book..ugh! It won't be long before my SM breaks down and starts slacking off on it...at least now she's color coding things so each column is assigned to my SM or SS. Hint..when no one is looking check something off...and since my store is in a parking lot we can't escape green sweep but I am very close to saying something about how SS never seem to be the ones out there. To Steve: In my store we are not allowed to call in sick we have to look for coverage and then call the store to let them know who's covering for us and my SM is the only one who is allowed to make any scheduling changes. It is rare for someone to have to sit in the back and start calling people up. As for help with tip jars... we have plastic box for the DT and for the front we have a small vase covered with coffee stickers so it's very hard for someone to try to steal out tips.

wow. I'm glad I checked this site out before I applied for a job. haha, I clicked "starbucks" on google and found this site among others, even though my original purpose was to get a little oriented with the place I was gonna apply for. Well I'm only 17, so I'm just looking for a minimum wage job anyway, and starbucks is pretty close to my house. But yeah, after this, gahhh. Anyway now that I'm here, I've heard that starbucks gives really lame hours, esp. if your new. Is that true? Because I don't want to come home really late at night, and during school I don't want to work weekdays. haha, somehow I get the feeling I don't have the privelege to decide that for myself though, haha. k thanks.

just so you all know, the reason people are so addicted is because of the crack we put in the coffee -- it\'s not *really* bitter or burned, that\'s just the aftertaste of some heavy-duty druggery. also, if it takes longer to say the name of a drink than it does to make it... that\'s just wrong. i avoid it at all costs (i always say i\'m \"old-school\", and somehow get away with it.) :) although i do make the customer say the whole word \'frappuccino\' -- i figure if i have to, then so do they, darn it! i\'ve been calling drinks back as we\'re supposed to, but just when i get to the \'frappuccino\' bit, i say f**kaccino under my breath... it makes my little evil heart do a tiny leap of joy. but DON\'T say it out loud. :) here\'s bad starbucks joke of the day: \"kenya?\" \"yukon!\" hahaha...ha...sorry. :)

why oh why does starbucks insist that we call out the official beverage name, such as "chai creme frappucino blended creme"??? i kid you not...i really try and do my job with a decent attitude, but when the company insists that drinks be called out this way, it's pretty tough. oh man only two weeks left for me! found a big-girl job where i will actually use my degree!

I hate it and if I could go back to the day I was hired I would have told my fat a$s manager to go back to argentina where here b*tch as$ came from.

Hello again. It's been a while. I'm down to my last 12 working day at *$ and I'm almost counting the hours now. And still there are some things that I just can't believe. My SM is on holiday and I'm responsible for everything now. I'm only a SS, no ASM, but well. That's not too difficult. Now we have to Trainees, one who's going to be an SS and will replace me and one Barista who we train for another store. The first one is really nice. She learns fast and shows her interest in the job. But the Barista is just unbelievable. She can talok all day but never about work. She asks stupid questions such as is Howard Schultz jewish (is that an information you need to do this job???? What does it matter anyway)2 of my partner are gay. Both are really nice guys and I love working with them. They are respected just like anyone else. They are not forced to hide. At the store where I had the training almost all males where gay. I always liked the fact that they would tell about their boyfriends just the way I do sometimes too. But the new Barista rolled her eyes when she found out and you could tell that she found that digusting. So I pointed out that at *$ we respect each other and we respect our differences. Next question she asked " would *$ fire someone because they don't like the persons personality?" Hell, NO I just told you... They only fire someone that is unable to work ( which she really is)I just can't believe that *$ doesn't have applications of decent people. What the hell where they thinking when they hired her. It took her 4 hours to drive me crazy and both of the other SS asked me if she's having a mental problem. 12 more working days...

I started working at Starbucks a few weeks ago - I used to come all the time for drinks! I thought I would go work there for the discount , but now I am already looking for another job! It is awful! Some of the partners are nice, but the manager is a b$*#@ and the pay is worse. $6.75 is simply not enough once you take taxes out - and people need to learn that Starbucks is a "tipping place". God bless those that do. By the way, for those of you who drink Mocha: STOP!!!!! It is the most vile, disgusting thing. We were closing (we major pre-close at our store - we mop almost 2 hours before close) Anyway, the mocha syrup is not really a syrup but ends up being a glob and really thick and I wouldn't want it. Starbucks is gross and a horrible place to work.

I've been working at starbucks for about a year now. And I've heard stories of it being the perfect place to work bla bla bla. Well lets see....oh yeah its not. I've been in three stores now already. My first store the manager was awesome. At the second the stupid ignorant woman who had only worked for the company a month tried to say I was not "shift supervisor" quality. This coming from someone who didn't even know how to count the store's safe. She played favorites with pretty much anyone who had transferred into the store with her, leaving the ones already their to band together into some anti-manager cult. She tried pinning missing money on me so many times that I almost puked. I told her I had to have a dentist appointment one day and she decided that since I didnt show up for work that day, she'd take me off the schedule for the rest of the week, and not even tell me about it! Apparently I had not shown "leadership" skills for going to a damn dentist appointment. All of this when I had left her a note in the log book about my appointment two weeks earlier. So I told her to go to hell (yeah I know, not a good move) and I took a denotion because I was sick of her stupid managing skills and I was moving anyway so I was like whatever. So I moved, but I'm still stuck in espresso up to my knee's. The manager I have now doesnt even give hours to anyone in the store. Not even the minimum amount of hours for barista's or supervisor's. So my paycheck is lame, and I'm looking forward to graduating and quitting this stupid job from coffee hell. This is great that I'm able to say something about the company without anyone shoving a bunch of bull down my throat. Thanks! (OH and too all you miserable business customers, I don't give a crap about you and how your coffee is made, so don't think I do it right every time, piss off.)

I can't help but wonder: how has Starbuck's become SOOOOO damn popular? To me, Starbucks has destroyed (no, not re-created or transformed) the public, philosiphizing coffee house. Now, I see young professionals impatiently awaiting their coffee, teenagers gossiping and older folks discussing their hemorroids and back pains. They have serruptisously "comforted" us by making it well aware they are an ethical company: ever notice the "certificate" of fair business practices on their coffee bags? Moreover, every coffee cup is stamped, labeled and processed in order for you to carry their advertisement around with pride, class and sophistication. We have been bought!!!!

Splenda: Before, the pre-closer at my store used to clean the syrup pumps (the bottled ones), stock everything, sweep & mop the entire store, clean the bathroom, and take out the trash. The current manager only cared about the trash, and them doing the floors and bathrooms. The closers used to put the mochas and chai into cups (3-5 hrs. before closing) and free-pour it, clean the counters, and stock & close the pastry case half/hour to an hour before closing (if a customer asked for something we still gave it to them) and bring in the furniture. Then one night the DM came in 5 mins. before we closed and saw that those things were done and said it lowered the quality of service to customers & that things should be the same throughout the day. He talked about us free-pouring the syrups, but after being there for so long you can estimate how much goes into each cup. Chefs measure by sight and we never had complaints. So after that, all the pre-closer did was stock the RTD case, take out the trash and mop behind the registers. Closers had to mop the rest of the store an hour before closing and break everything down 10 mins. after closing. Every store did things differently though, because I worked at another store and a guy just cleaned the mocha pumps, filled the containers to the top and wrapped them and left them outside the fridge overnight. (Now that I don't work for starf*x, I stay away from the mochas and chai because I don't know how they're stored.) If the mochas or chai were running low I filled them up just a little, because if you keep filling it up, you're never going to have a chance to wash it. If one of the mochas was about a quarter full, I combined it w/the other one so I could at least wash one container at a decent time. There were times though when we did fill the WM & CH to the top, if there was a lot of work, and just wrapped them and put them in the fridge. Do whatever is best for you. We only used 2 traditional urns during the morning since that was the time we sold the most coffee. Around noon-ish we only used one and at 5p.m. only brewed mild when it was ordered because only a few cups were sold of it during the day. I agree with Ex-Manager's last sentence, but sometimes doing all of that work, especially when the store was packed and you have no clean plates, crumbs all over the floor, depleted pastry trays (even when they were stocked in the afternoon), furniture to bring in, to mop the lobby, bring in furniture, etc. and to break down things is a lot for TWO people to do, especially when one does everything. (The manager knew about this specific person's work habits because many people complained about her but she wants to be seen as a nice person.) Just hope that you work with someone who carries their own weight and can prioritize their time. Even though every store shouldn't be different, each one is. To NYC coffee drinker: I've seen people who just ignore customers and the customer is in line or standing with their hand under their chin waiting to be acknowledged. And you said you tried to get her attention, so I can understand how that is frustrating and time-wasting. People can be rude and some just don't care. But sometimes the barista calls out a drink order and no one claims it. I've been there...made a drink, called it out 3-4 times and had to walk around the store asking who ordered it. When we did write the names on the cups AND called out the names w/the order, people sometimes still didn't pick it up! Someone posted something about a lady asking if a cup w/a man's name on it was hers. That was pretty funny! Now if it's busy, they're not going to have time to stop what they're doing to hunt you down, because they may have 15 cups lined up and many pitchers of milk going on and they may have whole in the nonfat pitcher and vice versa & need to remember that. And they have to give you your drink in 3 mins. So they're trying to make each drink as fast as possible w/hopefully the best quality. If that happens to you again and whoever is on the bar ignores you, tell whomever took your order and they can probably slip it in the line so you won't have to wait until all the other drinks are made or they can make it for you themself.

to nyc coffee drinker: we do sometimes put names or initials on the cups (the dm wants us to do it *all* the time... pshhhaw, right) -- but that still doesn't always work. we do try, but there are those customers who, when you call out "decaf grande latte for jim" go: "is that mine?" barista: "no ma'am, it's for jim" cust: "is that an iced mocha?" bar: "no, it's a decaf grande latte" cust: "mine was supposed to be cold!" bar: "that's not yours, ma'am. yours is up next -- isn't your name nancy?" cust: "how do you know my name?!?" i always want to tell those people who ask "why?" when i have to ask for a name or initial that i'm planning on stalking them later... no offense... just another vent. :)
