Hello I applaud your site. First, I'll start by saying I am a French speaking Canadian (Montreal)so maybe I'll do some mistakes. I think that if I want a coffee and SBUX is the only one in town, I'll buy from them (YES they are pricey for the quality). If I have an alternative, I will get it from the others (Van Houtte, Green Mountain Coffee......). I have to admit that I'm getting sick of the GIANTS (Wall Mart, McDo, SBUX). Folks wake up. Stop thinking like ROBOTS and help the family owned shops. You could be surprised by the quality they have to offer. Stop following the masses because we know that they are ALWAYS wrong! Look at the gold market in 1979. Who was waiting to buy at $900 onces? The masses! Look at the stock market in 2000. 1929. The more you put in SBUX and Wall Mart and......wether is their stocks or merchandise, the more you will lose in the end. Thanks for your site.

Does anyone know how much Starbucks spends on marketing for each individual store?

Hi there, all. I am stoked you guys have this site. Cleansweep, coffeemasters, etc... I am sick of it all! I have worked as a SM now for four years and it sux! You are always having to stay on top of the weekly changes taking place and your partners are the ones who suffer. When I started you were able to really connect with partners, customers, and have a clean fun store. I apologize to any partner who has ever been mistreated by their manager. You get paid crap and you work your ass off. The concepts are all great and sugar coated but at the store level, there is no follow through. I WILL quit soon, cash in my stock, and give th finger to it all. Thanks for listening. Thanks for a place to complain.

I stumbled upon this site. Interesting. I don't work for Starbucks or do I ever intend to. I am a Starbucks customer, rarely. When I do go to Starbucks I order a "small cup of coffee please", pay for it and leave a dollar tip. Which brings me to the subject of tips. Why would a company,Starbucks or otherwise, that enables employees to make tips, pay them to count their own money? Retail Manager?

Praise be unto you fine people for letting me know there are still free thinking, sarcastic, flesh and blood non-robots out there. I took this wretched job out of desperation upon moving to southern california and have hated it since day one. The job hunt continues.I cannot fit all my gripes into one posting.Where would I start? the term "partner"? Getting to wear a funnny straw hat while shilling new product? getting harshly reprimanded for the tamest attempt at defending myself from some of the loudmouth cattle that try to draw me into a confrontation over a cup of coffee? watching my co-worker get spit on by the denizens of the ghetto bordering our "store"? hmmmm.....I'll have to get back to you.......

I live in Normal, Illinois, and the movers and shakers of the community have a major chubby over the new Starbucks out on the "beltline." But our town is blessed with three independent coffeeshops run by people with heart and artistic sensibilities... and all three of them make BETTER COFFEE THAN STARBUCKS. (Sorry about shouting there but it just *isses me off that starbucks got so big just because people don't know any better.) Cool site!

I can't believe how spoiled most of the people who work at BUX are. This is the easiest job I have ever had. Try some hard labor or farmwork and try bitching about a little mess then. I took a job here because I needed a vacation. You all have it easy working BUX. You know why you don't make much money.....it's not a hard job. What do you expect? a 100k a year job for making drinks? You don't even need a formal education for this. A chimp could do it. Appreciate what you have and stop being so pretentious

re: s smith in cali. baristas start off @ 7.50 and there is usu. a raise every six months, depending on your review you get 1.5% or 3% raise. shift supervisors start off @ 9 and follows the same pattern. i'm not sure about store manager's pay, although i saw a manager @ a fairly small starbucks ($20,000/week) bring home after taxes, $2000 (she was a fairly new manager) and they also get bonuses... hope this helps some what btw: Bot # 1380138, i totally understand what you went through, partner resource is nothing but bull shit. i called them ask them a question i did not want my manager nor my DM to know, and left her with my name and phone number...what did i get? a call from my DM asking me why i went through the partner resource and not through my SM...BS like that makes me wonder who i can go to if i have any problem with either my SM or DM...they seem to be in a cohort of some sort...the need to look for another job is becoming a urgent for me!

I love your web site and I go to Starbucks! I am glad to see someone voiceing their opinion against the masses and pop culture. However I have to be honest, I go to Starbuck's because of the beautiful behinds on the girls that work at the one near my house. I could take the coffee either way, it isn't really all that great.

I am a Starbucks lover. Or was. Until I read about how poorly you guys are paid. To Poor Barista. Please get enrolled in a local college and start taking some business classes. (if you can't afford them you can get GRANTS, not loans. Grants you don't pay back if you can qualify for them. Eventually if you want a degree, you will need to probably take out a loan unless you have a trust fund or wealthy parents. In the meantime, get an entry level job just doing filing or anything to get your foot in the door. I don't know how old you are but you have to start somewhere. If you get a job with a larger company you can get moved up to an administrative assistant which isn't exactly a glamour job but beats wiping up after people. (most larger companys promote from within first) If you want to make more money and you do not have a degree you need to work your way up by starting at the bottom of the heap or get into sales if you are good at that. Trust me. I did it. I started out at age 22 filing papers. I am 35 now, a Marketing Coordinator making $35,000 a year. I know that is not much but it beats minimum wage. I would like to add that I guess I am one of the few that will wipe up any mess I make when I am at Starbucks. If I pay $1.73 for coffee and give you guys $2.00 and don't want change is that good or bad? I usually only drink drip. I get a latte about once a month. I have a question. Are the coffee machines they sell at Starbucks really worth what the price tag is? One last comment - I do hate that there is a Starbucks on every corner. I wish I was so addicted. . .

ive worked for the company for about a year. the first 6 months were awesome. we ran the store the way we wanted. my sm was an awesome manager. from what i understand our dm had a "talk" to our sm and sent in an AM to make sure we are all going by the book. our AM is deployment queen. i dont understand how a person who has never even been in our store tell us how to run a shift during a rush. im sorry for my foul language but F%$K THE BOOK. F#$K DEPLOYMENT. F%$K THIS NEW DUTY ROSTER BOOK. AND F#$K STARBUCKS. i hate this company and the only reason im still working for them is because i have to make rent.

I hate Starbucks with the fire of 1000 suns. Why you ask? Well recently my mother "won" a starbucks gift card from some lame contest deal, and proceded to go and try some of their coffe. I knew this was a bad omen the moment I steped foot into the store. People just stiing around doing nothing but reading the newspaper and sipping their doubble mocha latte frapachino with extra creme. Dont you people have jobs! Why are you just sitting drinking this butt mud? I was appauled by the scene, but my mom used the card anyway. To this day, she is addicted to the "Starbucks" coffe. Why? Its not all that good. This is when I began thinking, what if that jar of white powder that they sprinkle onto your drink isnt laced with some kind cocain or other addicting drug. Every person I know who goes to Starbucks is addicted. I dont understand the logic behind spending 5 dollars on a cup of coffe that you could have made for free at home, and your pantry doesnt charge for extra creme of sugar. Another thing about Starbucks that gets at me, is the face that they are spreading like the plague. I cant go a single mile down the street without spotting another one of these caffine bordellos. In all seriousness, There is one directly across the street from my school. In the SAME shopping centre, there are 2 more starbucks. Thats right people, one inside of albersons and one in the far corner of the strip mall. Its this nesecary? Not at all. In the near future, there will be one Starbucks on every corner. If the planet isnt covered with track homes, it is going to be Starbucks that riddles the landsape. This my friends, is too much to deal with. Now join me in spreading the truth about starbucks and their evil ways!

Cleansweep: We have to do it too, but not to the degree that you are saying. 3 nights a week, we stay an extra half hour after close to get everything done. I am super-psycho about things being clean, so that doesn't bother me, but if someone was following me around while I work, I would get just a little annoyed. So, the barista I had mentioned before worked with me again 2 nights ago. That night she pulled the same crap with standing around, barking drinks to everyone--there were times when I felt like saying, "make your own friggin drinks," and making her own "creations" that will make her money. In fact, she told customers that she made these creations and she is going to make $10,000 based on her creations. Now, I haven't worked there long enough to understand all the politics, but from what I read here, I definitely doubt she is going to get anything from making these "creations" except a huge caffeine buzz that she won't come down from. Luckily, my SS started to notice as well as other baristas that I thought were "buddy-buddy" with her. I am so glad I am transferring to our new store in August. Oh... does anyone know...I am working in an existing store, out of training, and found out the other night that we won't get tips until we move to the new store. I mean, we work just as hard (if not harder in some cases) and we get screwed out of tips until our store opens. Does that sound right...

I left sbux after four years, and many of the stories on your site are true. Managers can and have been fired for altering punches because dumb partners cant even remember to punch out. (how hard is that, damn!) my store was very successful: sales, whole bean sales, and mystery shop scores AKA snapshots. when i first started there it wasnt staffed(no manager, really, brand new asst. mgr., and only 8 employees) properly, filthy(crumbs and coffee spilled all over chairs), and poorly run. when i left the store a few weeks back it was in the top 5 in the company's business categories.our dm was really reasonable when i first started and ever since a new regional director was promoted she changed and lost respect from pretty much her whole management team. For example, one manager bought a home in florida and wanted to transfer there. he was written up for some matter and couldnt transfer because of company policy.. if u have been written up you cant be promoted or transfer to another store or position.. what bs! this young manager had to put his life on hold because of that! then i later learned that the dm was just saying that he was written up because she wanted to fire him up to work harder.....yeah sounds like a great company to work for .. thank god im outta there.. i feel like a bird that was let out of a cage. i love your site by the way

I don't think that the gods of Starbucks realize what they are doing to their company. Everything that I have read from this site is exactly what is happening to all the starbucks in my area. I used to love going to work, I made great friends and the costumers were always so nice. But now with all the new rules the employees are leaving along with the SM. The excutives are ruining their company. I think some ex-employees should start their own chain of coffee shops and really make Starbucks suffer because we realize whar costumers want not what the excutives think they want.

Several other stupid comments made by customers since the first gem I posted ("Are the ice-blended drinks cold?").... 1)Barista: "Would you like cream on that?" Customer: "Is it non-fattening cream?" (what the F other kind is there?)... 2)Customer: "Do you guys close at 6?" (which would have been a perfectly understandable question if it hadn't been 7.30). 3) The man who ordered (and this is a word-for-word quote) "a bacon and egg pie", then brought it back and informed me that he didn't eat bacon for religious reasons... what the F, man?

100% cnd: Well said! You have just summarized a life in the day of a barista to perfection. I love it! May have to put that in my book! Mike Booth: No, real EXpresso does not come in a cheap ceramic cup with a twist of lemon, but real ESpresso does. For someone who fancies himself such an expert that sure was an ignorant blunder... Miss you partners! Save the planet, conserve your carrying tryas!

Let me just say one thing before I start my rant: When I first started working at the Bux a little over a year ago, it was truly a wonderful working atmosphere. My fellow baristas and I were very close, and always had a great time together and with our customers. Our manager made the place really special, like Central Perk. It wasn't so "corporate" feeling. We cared about our store, our drinks, we cared about what we did. Then - "corporate" reared its ugly head and our kick-ass manager was gone. Without notice. Because he and his district manager didn't much like each other. Didn't have anything to do with shady business, insubordination, or poor sales. In fact we had the best retail and whole bean sales around. Overnight we had this twitchy little man move on in and change everything around like he knew what he was doing. But he started running the place like a "corporate outlet," not a "neighborhood coffee shop." I can't stand him. Within weeks, our seasoned, talented, and enjoyable staff was down to a skeleton crew that is only still there because they have no where else to go. Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to move on are helping them find a job as best as we can. Some have left with no where else to go, because it's like working at McDonald's now. The point is, we never knew how much our old manager protected us from the corporate B.S. He ran his store with such integrity and spirit, and our customers knew it. So did we. But now there is little corporate kiss-ass man, who - literally - does not make ONE DECISION without first consulting the district manager who fired our boy. So they got what they wanted. Not a unique neighborhood coffee shop with life and personality, but a corporate entity which has changed its whole focus to "efficiency," and "improved organization." Which, by the way, they are not getting. And they lost a hell of a lot of talented, honest, and hard-working staff. Good luck, corporate biotches. You want Starbucks to be a "thrid place" for your customers. (That is Starbucks-corporate-speak meaning the main place for someone to hang out, second only to home and work.) By running your business this way with no regard to your hard-working employees who genuinely cared about your customers and your store, you will soon have a nasty-looking, unfriendly chain of fast-food joints that people are going to see right through. Starbucks sucks.

TOP TEN rants of working for "starsucks": 1. A tall Tai Chi....it isn't a freaking martial art- Chai tea! 2. "What do you mean, you can't toast it?" I mean, WE CANT TOAST IT! 3. " I asked for no whip cream!" Pardon me? That's because you ordered the latte (hot!) and you grabbed that guys mocha frappucino! GEEZ! 4. I got paid more to do less at every single job I ever had. 5. I myself have to wait so long for a drink that half my break is gone...and this resulting from stupid customers that grab the wrong drinks and mess up the entire line... 6. You know...there is a garbage right beside you....don't use the freakin' floor! 7. You just saw me wipe the condiment stand and I am still standing beside you...and you shake cinnamon all over and walk off. YOU SLOBS! 8. I can't ban someone from the store until all this stuff happens but these crackheads come in and try to steal our tips and are all tweaked out and callin me a b*&tch. 9. If I hear willie nelson one more time I will scrrrreeeam. 10. Frapp. Lite. GROSS foamy gunk.

poor barista: I'd advise you to look for another job, even if it's a 2nd job. I did that and made more at my 2nd job for way less work. And brought home for 20 hrs. what you're bringing in for 40 hrs. You're lucky to get 40 hrs. because only the manager made that at my store, shifts made at most 35, and everyone else was between 8-25 hrs. Ask your friends and family if they know of any job openings. samsonite: I don't think age has anything to do with it, managers have no hiring skills. The majority of people at my store were around 20 y/o and there were a few bad apples who got paid for doing absolutely nothing. But there were also some older people 26+ (sorry guys) who were clueless. And I'm talking about people who acted like they were 9 and needed someone to show them how to do every little thing. The manager was clueless herself and didn't and still doesn't hire good employees. Management sets an example and this one doesn't set a good one & that's why there's been a 60% turnover in 3 months! The best SS was 19 and he was really strict about the rules and we got along well because we were both clean and knew that to play hard you have to work hard. I heard that several regular customers have stopped going to my former store because of the service. There's a girl there who only wants to make drinks but runs to charge cops. Don't know why, because no one does that anymore and since they got their drinks for free they came all the time. That's probably the only reason why the store wasn't robbed when there was a string of robberies in the neighborhood. She's also a reason why customers come in when she's not there because she doesn't know how to talk to people.
