-I hate Starbucks. A sick capsule full of pretentious 20, 30 somethings reeking of mediocrity. The pungent odor of steamed skim milk polluting the air and blending with useless babble. Books stained with expresso, never read. I still remember my marketing friends who used to traipse around the office holding gigantic starbucks cups every morning. 'Come to work ten minutes early so we can go down to Starbucks together!' One would sing. 'I gotta have my frappuccino~! (Me, with a blank look, holding a 7-11 cup.)- *This is actually an excerpt from my journal.

I just left my position there. I think that people who work there, especially management get more money in their paychecks when they are mean, lie to you, or tattletale. The reason most locations do not cut bagels for customers is because all of their knives are sticking out of peoples backs. And that is my kind opinion. thanks for listening Ophelia

Hey all, I'm Sanctum and Sanctum1972 both..so don't get confused :). Anyway, I have a question..do any of you have tendonitis or 'wear and tear' on your arms regarding the use of SB's Marozzoco espresso machines? If anyone has repetitive stress syndrome and how they try to reduce any damage, I'm curious to hear about it. It's also similar to carpal tunnel's.

oh, siren, i almost forgot...congratulations on being free :):) I wish you did have an evil customer. If it were me, and some jerk was leaning over the counter going, "Oh, don't forget to put in 5 shots, 3 pumps of vanilla, blended four times, cinnamon, and the kitchen sink, you got it?" I'd fling my green apron, stains and all, and say, "Do it yourself" and walk out :)

hey, at least you dont work at KFC and get people ordering "burger and chips" then yelling at you for not giving them a drink with it and claiming that thats what you get for ordering "burger and chips" rather than a burger meal! also I once went to starbucks and a trainee girl was told by the girl that took my order to do a latte with 3. Id asked for triple latte but the poor girl made me 3 latte's! I felt really bad for her cos she was new and I never saw her in there again. I just hope she dident get in trouble.

In the patern of Anhauser-Bush and Dannon Yogurt, Starbucks has performed a marketing miracle - They have created a nation of gourmet coffee connaisseurs out of a people that generally doesn't like the taste of coffee! Gotta take my hat off to them! But I will not stand in line to pay $5.00 for a cup ao anyone's coffee!

you think you're being ripped off in the States? Well try Germany. I was in one of their Frankfurt stores and there the sizes of the drinks are smaller than the States and Britain!! You get "short", "tall" and "grande". They don't even do venti coffees! The size of a "short" cup is so small that it warrants the name "minature". And a "short, skinny, decaff latte" cost me €2.50, about $2.50!

Regarding the book on Amazon. Don't actually buy it... just write a review about it. The last thing we need to do is line Howard's pockets.

i've been trying to transfer to another store, since the store i'm currently is is too far **20 miles** and the manager is totally fake...i've only been working in the store for about a month now. i recently found another store that need a another shift lead. i let my manager know my situation with getting rides...she told me i can't be transferred because i haven't been with the store for over six months...i found this policy ridiculous and the reason BS...if a partner has issues with the the store, it shouldn't matter whether they have been with the store a week or a year...i've talked to my old manager, and she have said, she would have let me transferred...btw i understande she'll have trouble replacing me b/c she DOES NOT like to give anyone a promotion **that last shift got promoted after being told she'll become one for about 5 months** and that most of the partners hate her guts and act fake around her...she trusts no one and everyone thinks she's a idiot! ugh..

TO CURIOUS: Heres the story about consistantly NOT clocking out for a shift, etc. Basically your DM will come along and evaluate your manager during what is called a MSR. For each time that someone had to be put into the system it counts AGAINST your manager. Managers raises are based on how well they score on MSRs. So, its really up to your manager on how he/she wants to deal with you. You could have a few things happen: get written up, verbally warned, or it could lead to termination but I think termination would ONLY come after being written up the designated amout of times. Just to let you know, before they can LEGALLY fire you, your last write up actually HAS TO STATE that it is your final, OR you could possibly bring litigation into it and they dont want to deal with that. Ultimately it IS your responsibility to REMEMBER to clock out. The reason its a serious issue of not clocking in/out, etc is that each time you dont do it, the manager has to go into the computer system and manually put it in, which in turn, puts your manager at risk because its ALTERING your shift. If you came along and argued that you worked longer, etc. they could get into alot of trouble for changing your punch ins/outs....so of course a manager is going to cover his or her butt. I suggest if you want to keep your job, you try to come up with an idea to help you remember to clock out....maybe leave a note on your car steering wheel so if you get in your car and see it, you'll remember to go back and clock out. Just a suggestion.

Curious: If an employee, at any job, continuously forgets to punch the same rules would apply as with breaking any other policy. Warning, Final Warning, Termination. If someone never clocks out it creates more work for the manager because they have to find out when you left to make sure you are getting paid for all the time worked. They have to rely on an employee's honesty, or memory for that matter, about the time they actually left. A manager cannot be the judge of whether or not a violation of policy is "innocent." Ultimately, an employee is solely responsible for keeping accurate time records. Many times an employee will unintentionally break a company policy. That is why there are verbal/written warnings. It gives them a chance to correct the behavior without losing there job over an accident. If someone continues to "innocently" forgets to adhere to a policy, then they will continue to struggle in any job because an employee must be competent enough to change a behavior after multiple warnings

Amazon reader is right. We should all read Howards book of lies, then write our own opinions of Starbucks based on our own experience. Every consumer should know about the three minute rule that cheapens the quality of drinks. Every consumer should know that the frappucino comes out of a BOX and that is is not just coffee, milk, and sugar... but corn syrup and preservatives. Every consumer should know that pastries are not fresh and contain a chock full of preservatives- much like the 'pastries' you see sitting on supermarket shelves for months. Reviews on amazon should be well written, articulate, and surpass the quality of other reviews of Howard Schultz's book- because remember, on Amazon, readers can rate book reviews depending on how helpful the reviews are. The more votes each book review gets, the further it tops the list of book reviews of each book so Amazon readers can see the reviews more easily. Don't forget to vote for reviews that are 'helpful' on amazon.

Yep. Starbucks is wasting their money. Here in Rolling Meadows, IL (20 Mi from O'Hare, or 1 mi from the Arlington Racetrack) 3 starbucks are being built at the same time, 2 blicks from each other. to make another note, if not noted, the Chicago Trib. did an article about the first starbucks on the south side. This is *Astonishing* and *new buying power to black people*. They're just wasting their time ranting about a damn cup of coffee. I also went out with my g/f last night (for ne1 to care) and she was pulled in by marketing to buy 2 cups of coffee during our date. www.drumlineramos.com

Sanctum1972 : I Agree with you. Starbucks needs to stop trying to make every store the same but instead look at each store as an indiviual coffee shops. With all the new roles coming down from the gods of Starbucks my store has changed so much that the regular costumers aren't coming back. TWO THUMBS UP FOR STARBUCKS!

I agreed with Pebbles, I have worked for Starbucks for three years and last Thursday was the first time that I have ever been mean to a costumer. It was 12:02am, closing time, and I had just finished up with our last costumers for the night when this women and her dim-witted husband had come in. Now let me tell you that this women had been banded from every other Starbucks in the city and my store was the only one that was nice enough serve her. She came in and got mad when I said to her "we are pretty much all cleaned up but go ahead tell me your order and I'll see if I can make it" She started to yell at me because the door wasn't locked. (Well DUH! There were people in the store packing up) I looked at her and said "Why are you complaining I'm making your drinks" Yes, I did pop an attitude with her but I apologized to her and gave her drinks for free. Guess what that witch did?.... She went to my DM and complained that I didn't make you stupid mocha frapp right! So now after three years of flawless service at Starbucks I'm probably going to get fired because of her.

Starbucks & Jim Beam to Elizabeth. I read your post about the liquor connection. My wife and I purchased some Starbucks stock. When she heard about the Jim Beam connection, she had me sell it. Made a small profit. We are now into Peet's stock instead. I hear Peet's first Texas store is near the University in Austin. Let us know how the protest goes if you have one. To Curious...nothing will happen. You just inform the Shift or the Manager of the oversight and they'll log it on the book. But as time goes on, they may tire of it and ask you to be more mindful of the clocking in/out or lose the job.

Tamugirl: I'm glad to hear you will be free from the Siren's grasp soon, I wish I'd thought about walking out with my finger up, but I was lucky enough to at least like the people I worked with. Unfortunately, none of the customers pushed me on my last day, I was SO ready! The one customer I was totally prepared to rip in to showed up 15 minutes after I walked out the door.. That stupid ba$tard had the nerve to ask for his nasty frapp to be bleneded 5, YES 5 times. This apparently was not satisfactory and he asked them to remake it. Had I been there, I would have dumped that GD drink all over his smug face.

I could not believe what happened tonight. I went out drinking at at wine bistro and then to a SB down the street to get a little caffeine and to "test" my partner discount. It turns out my discount and partner # was not found. It's been since last month that I was hired back into the company as a transfer and my partner # has not be recognized on the POS computers. In the last 5 years I've used my old # and it worked in Vermont after reinstatement. And now back in Ohio, I get no results?? Is the manager breaking the law or is SB effing around?? I'm not supposed to be getting a new partner # or card because my old one still exists. If they're scheduling me to work in the past month til now and my partner # does'nt become recogized for discounts, then there is something very wrong here. Can anyone enlighten me what the heck is going on here? This cannot be standard SB policy to have us wait more than 3-4 weeks for partner #'s to be activated or re-activated. It is supposed to be instantaneous.

What happens to an employee if he/she continuously and innocently forgets to clock out after his/her shift? Thanks in advance for your answers.

I would like to let everyone here in on a certain experience I am very proud. Around November of 2000, I and a friend of mine, walked into a Starbucks in San Antonio. In a well orchestrated event, I purchased two-large coffees and subsequently dumped them on an open table. My friend handed out fliers detailed and justifying our act of "culture jamming," or the 21st Century's idea of civil disobedience. In it, we apologized to the employees for the mess of cheap coffee that they would later have to clean up, explained our rational of unethical business practices, the company's plight to control the market with what is called the “saturation effect,” and left. In that brief moment before I walked out the door, I noticed that I had possibly awakened others on the realization that they were being suckered by this company. Since then, I have religiously banned any purchases from Starbucks and vigorously debated the mounting case against them. So the moral of this story is: Consumers can make a difference even in a generation of apathy.
